Title: Probing the firn refractive index profile using antenna response
Abstract The Radio Neutrino Observatory-Greenland (RNO-G, at Summit Station) experiment comprises an extensive fat-dipole antenna array deployed into ice boreholes over an eventual area of approximately 35 km2. Since the RNO-G experimental sensitivity depends on the radio-frequency properties of the firn, which are known to vary laterally on sub-km distance scales and vertically on sub-meter distance scales, a technique for quickly extracting information on firn ice properties with depth ($$n(z)$$) during drilling and deployment is desirable. Given that a dipole’s resonant wavelength is fixed by geometry, the resonant frequency$$f_{res}$$(measured as an S-parameter reflection coefficient [‘$$S_{11}$$’] minimum) scales inversely with the local refractive index, allowing a translation of a depth-dependent$$S_{11}$$(z) profile into$$n(z)$$.$$S_{11}$$(z) data were initially taken in August 2024 using a dipole lowered into a newly drilled 98 ± 1 mm diameter, 350 m deep borehole at Summit Station, Greenland, approximately 1 km from the site of the original GISP-2 core; improved measurements were subsequently made in May 2025. We conclude that$$S_{11}$$(z) data can be used to estimate$$n(z)$$, on 50 cm vertical scales, at the per cent level of accuracy required by experiments such as RN0-G.  more » « less

  1. Abstract Let Γ be a finite graph and let$$A(\Gamma)$$be the corresponding right-angled Artin group. From an arbitrary basis$$\mathcal B$$of$$H^1(A(\Gamma),\mathbb F)$$over an arbitrary field, we construct a natural graph$$\Gamma_{\mathcal B}$$from the cup product, called thecohomology basis graph. We show that$$\Gamma_{\mathcal B}$$always contains Γ as a subgraph. This provides an effective way to reconstruct the defining graph Γ from the cohomology of$$A(\Gamma)$$, to characterize the planarity of the defining graph from the algebra of$$A(\Gamma)$$and to recover many other natural graph-theoretic invariants. We also investigate the behaviour of the cohomology basis graph under passage to elementary subminors and show that it is not well-behaved under edge contraction.

  2. Abstract We present a method to solve numerically the Cauchy problem for the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with a box-type initial condition (IC) having a nontrivial background of amplitude$$q_o \gt 0$$as$$x\to \pm \infty$$by implementing numerically the corresponding inverse scattering transform (IST). The Riemann–Hilbert problem associated with the inverse transform is solved numerically by means of appropriate contour deformations in the complex plane following the numerical implementation of the Deift–Zhou nonlinear steepest descent method. In this work, the box parameters are chosen so that there is no discrete spectrum (i.e., no solitons). The numerical method is demonstrated to be accurate within the two asymptotic regimes corresponding to two different regions of the$$(x,t)$$-plane depending on whether$$|x/(2t)| \lt q_o$$or$$|x/(2t)| \gt q_o$$, as$$t \to \infty$$.

  3. We study homeomorphisms of a Cantor set with$$k$$($$k<+\infty$$) minimal invariant closed (but not open) subsets; we also study crossed product C*-algebras associated to these Cantor systems and certain of their orbit-cut sub-C*-algebras. In the case where$$k\geq 2$$, the crossed product C*-algebra is stably finite, has stable rank 2, and has real rank 0 if in addition$$(X,\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E})$$is aperiodic. The image of the index map is connected to certain directed graphs arising from the Bratteli–Vershik–Kakutani model of the Cantor system. Using this, it is shown that the ideal of the Bratteli diagram (of the Bratteli–Vershik–Kakutani model) must have at least$$k$$vertices at each level, and the image of the index map must consist of infinitesimals.

  4. Abstract We provide a uniform bound on the partial sums of multiplicative functions under very general hypotheses. As an application, we give a nearly optimal estimate for the count of$$n \le x$$for which the Alladi–Erdős function$$A(n) = \sum_{p^k \parallel n} k p$$takes values in a given residue class moduloq, whereqvaries uniformly up to a fixed power of$$\log x$$. We establish a similar result for the equidistribution of the Euler totient function$$\phi(n)$$among the coprime residues to the ‘correct’ moduliqthat vary uniformly in a similar range and also quantify the failure of equidistribution of the values of$$\phi(n)$$among the coprime residue classes to the ‘incorrect’ moduli.

  5. Abstract We prove that the rational cohomology group$$H^{11}(\overline {\mathcal {M}}_{g,n})$$vanishes unless$$g = 1$$and$$n \geq 11$$. We show furthermore that$$H^k(\overline {\mathcal {M}}_{g,n})$$is pure Hodge–Tate for all even$$k \leq 12$$and deduce that$$\# \overline {\mathcal {M}}_{g,n}(\mathbb {F}_q)$$is surprisingly well approximated by a polynomial inq. In addition, we use$$H^{11}(\overline {\mathcal {M}}_{1,11})$$and its image under Gysin push-forward for tautological maps to produce many new examples of moduli spaces of stable curves with nonvanishing odd cohomology and nontautological algebraic cycle classes in Chow cohomology.
