Abstract We present cosmological results from the measurement of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in galaxy, quasar and Lyman-αforest tracers from the first year of observations from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), to be released in the DESI Data Release 1. DESI BAO provide robust measurements of the transverse comoving distance and Hubble rate, or their combination, relative to the sound horizon, in seven redshift bins from over 6 million extragalactic objects in the redshift range 0.1 <z< 4.2. To mitigate confirmation bias, a blind analysis was implemented to measure the BAO scales. DESI BAO data alone are consistent with the standard flat ΛCDM cosmological model with a matter density Ωm=0.295±0.015. Paired with a baryon density prior from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and the robustly measured acoustic angular scale from the cosmic microwave background (CMB), DESI requiresH0=(68.52±0.62) km s-1Mpc-1. In conjunction with CMB anisotropies fromPlanckand CMB lensing data fromPlanckand ACT, we find Ωm=0.307± 0.005 andH0=(67.97±0.38) km s-1Mpc-1. Extending the baseline model with a constant dark energy equation of state parameterw, DESI BAO alone requirew=-0.99+0.15-0.13. In models with a time-varying dark energy equation of state parametrised byw0andwa, combinations of DESI with CMB or with type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) individually preferw0> -1 andwa< 0. This preference is 2.6σfor the DESI+CMB combination, and persists or grows when SN Ia are added in, giving results discrepant with the ΛCDM model at the 2.5σ, 3.5σor 3.9σlevels for the addition of the Pantheon+, Union3, or DES-SN5YR supernova datasets respectively. For the flat ΛCDM model with the sum of neutrino mass ∑mνfree, combining the DESI and CMB data yields an upper limit ∑mν< 0.072 (0.113) eV at 95% confidence for a ∑mν> 0 (∑mν> 0.059) eV prior. These neutrino-mass constraints are substantially relaxed if the background dynamics are allowed to deviate from flat ΛCDM.

Probing Physics beyond the Standard Model through Combined Analyses of Next-generation Type Ia Supernova, Cosmic Microwave Background, and Baryon Acoustic Oscillation Surveys
Abstract Observations of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), which probe the late Universe, together with baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) and the cosmic microwave background (CMB), which probe the intermediate and early epochs, provide complementary constraints on the expansion history of the Universe. In this work, we forecast constraints on dark energy and other extensions to the standard cosmological model by combining the SN Ia sample expected from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory’s Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), data from current and forthcoming CMB surveys, and BAO measurements from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). For the CMB, we use temperature, polarization, and lensing power spectra (TT/EE/TE/ϕϕ) from the South Pole Telescope, the planned Advanced Simons Observatory, and a CMB-S4–like experiment. We derive constraints on ΛCDM and its extensions involving the dark energy equation-of-state parameters (w0, wa) and the sum of neutrino masses ∑mνusing a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling framework. We find that the LSST Year 3 SN Ia sample can improve upon the DES Year 5 dark energy constraints by a factor of 2−2.5×, with the gains driven primarily by the significantly higher SN Ia density in the LSST sample. Similarly, DESI-DR3 shows up to a 1.8× improvement on dark energy parameters over DR2, driven largely by the substantial increase in the low-redshift sample. Combining CMB with LSST-Y3-SN Ia and DESI-DR3-BAO yieldsσ(w0) = 0.028 andσ(wa) = 0.11 forw0waCDM cosmology with the results being largely independent of the CMB dataset. The constraints weaken by 10%–30% when freeing ∑mνand spatial curvature. Moreover, the joint analysis of the three datasets can enable a 2σ–3σdetection of ∑mν.

Abstract We present constraints on cosmological parameters from the Pantheon+ analysis of 1701 light curves of 1550 distinct Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) ranging in redshift from z = 0.001 to 2.26. This work features an increased sample size from the addition of multiple cross-calibrated photometric systems of SNe covering an increased redshift span, and improved treatments of systematic uncertainties in comparison to the original Pantheon analysis, which together result in a factor of 2 improvement in cosmological constraining power. For a flat ΛCDM model, we find Ω M = 0.334 ± 0.018 from SNe Ia alone. For a flat w 0 CDM model, we measure w 0 = −0.90 ± 0.14 from SNe Ia alone, H 0 = 73.5 ± 1.1 km s −1 Mpc −1 when including the Cepheid host distances and covariance (SH0ES), and w 0 = − 0.978 − 0.031 + 0.024 when combining the SN likelihood with Planck constraints from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO); both w 0 values are consistent with a cosmological constant. We also present the most precise measurements to date on the evolution of dark energy in a flat w 0 w a CDM universe, and measure w a = − 0.1 − 2.0 + 0.9 from Pantheon+ SNe Ia alone, H 0 = 73.3 ± 1.1 km s −1 Mpc −1 when including SH0ES Cepheid distances, and w a = − 0.65 − 0.32 + 0.28 when combining Pantheon+ SNe Ia with CMB and BAO data. Finally, we find that systematic uncertainties in the use of SNe Ia along the distance ladder comprise less than one-third of the total uncertainty in the measurement of H 0 and cannot explain the present “Hubble tension” between local measurements and early universe predictions from the cosmological model.more » « less

Abstract We present cosmological constraints on deviations from general relativity (GR) from the first-year of clustering observations from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) in combination with other available datasets including the CMB data from Planck with CMB-lensing from Planck and ACT, BBN constraints on the physical baryon density, the galaxy weak lensing and clustering from DESY3 and supernova data from DESY5. We first consider the μ(a,k)–Σ(a,k) modified gravity (MG) parameterization (as well asη(a,k)) in a ΛCDM and aw0waCDM cosmological backgrounds. Using a functional form for time-only evolution givesμ0= 0.11+0.44-0.54from DESI(FS+BAO)+BBN and a wide prior onns. Using DESI(FS+BAO)+CMB+DESY3+DESY5-SN, we obtainμ0= 0.05 ± 0.22 and Σ0= 0.008 ± 0.045 and similarlyμ0= 0.02+0.19-0.24andη0= 0.09+0.36-0.60, in an ΛCDM background. Inw0waCDM we obtainμ0= -0.24+0.32-0.28and Σ0= 0.006 ± 0.043, consistent with GR, and we still find a preference of the data for a dynamical dark energy withw0> -1 andwa< 0. Using functional dependencies in both time and scale givesμ0and Σ0with a same level of precision as above but other scale MG parameters remain hard to constrain. We then move to binned parameterizations in a ΛCDM background starting with two bins in redshift and obtain,μ1= 1.02 ± 0.13,μ2= 1.04 ± 0.11, Σ1= 1.021 ± 0.029 and Σ2= 1.022+0.027-0.023, all consistent with the unity value of GR in the binning formalism. We then extend the analysis to combine two bins in redshift and two in scale giving 8 MG parameters that we find all consistent with GR. We note that we find here that the tension reported in previous studies about Σ0being inconsistent with GR when using Planck PR3 data goes away when we use the recentLoLLiPoP+HiLLiPoPlikelihoods. As noted in previous studies, this seems to indicate that the tension is indeed related to the CMB lensing anomaly in PR3 which is also resolved when using the recent likelihoods. We then constrain the class of Horndeski theory in the effective field theory of dark energy approach. We consider both EFT-basis andα-basis in the analysis. Assuming a power law parameterization for the EFT function Ω, which controls non-minimal coupling, we obtain Ω0= 0.012+0.001-0.012ands0= 0.996+0.54-0.20from the combination of DESI(FS+BAO)+DESY5SN+CMB in a ΛCDM background, which are consistent with GR. Similar results are obtained when using theα-basis and assuming no-braiding (αB= 0) giving cM< 1.14 at 95% CL in a ΛCDM background, also in agreement with GR. However, we see a mild yet consistent indication forcB> 0 whenαBis allowed to vary which will require further study to determine whether this is due to systematics or new physics.more » « less

We present cosmological constraints from eight strongly lensed quasars (hereafter, the TDCOSMO-2025 sample). Building on previous work, our analysis incorporated new deflector stellar velocity dispersions measured from spectra obtained with theJames WebbSpace Telescope (JWST), the Keck Telescopes, and the Very Large Telescope (VLT), utilizing improved methods. We used integrated JWST stellar kinematics for five lenses, VLT-MUSE for 2, and resolved kinematics from Keck and JWST for RX J1131−1231. We also considered two samples of non-time-delay lenses: 11 from the Sloan Lens ACS (SLACS) sample with Keck-KCWI resolved kinematics; and four from the Strong Lenses in the Legacy Survey (SL2S) sample. We improved our analysis of line-of-sight effects, the surface brightness profile of the lens galaxies, and orbital anisotropy, and corrected for projection effects in the dynamics. Our uncertainties are maximally conservative by accounting for the mass-sheet degeneracy in the deflectors’ mass density profiles. The analysis was blinded to prevent experimenter bias. Our primary result is based on the TDCOSMO-2025 sample, in combination with Ωmconstraints from the Pantheon+ Type Ia supernovae (SN) dataset. In the flat Λ cold dark matter (CDM), we findH0= 71.6+3.9−3.3km s−1Mpc−1. The SLACS and SL2S samples are in excellent agreement with the TDCOSMO-2025 sample, improving the precision onH0in flat ΛCDM to 4.6%. Using the Dark Energy Survey SN Year-5 dataset (DES-SN5YR) or DESI-DR2 baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) likelihoods instead of Pantheon+ yields very similar results. We also present constraints in the open ΛCDM,wCDM,w0waCDM, andwϕCDM cosmologies. The TDCOSMOH0inference is robust and consistent across all presented cosmological models, and our cosmological constraints in them agree with those from the BAO and SN.more » « less

Abstract The DESI DR2 BAO data, in combination with CMB and different SNIa datasets, exclude the flat ΛCDM model at more than 2.5σ when analyzed through thew0waCDM parametrization for evolving dark energy. This simple parametrization may not accurately capture the behavior of the entire redshift range at late times, which may introduce bias in the results. We use null tests that probe for deviations from flat ΛCDM at late times, independent of any specific dark energy parametrization. We provide several diagnostics for null tests and discuss their advantages and disadvantages. In particular, we derive diagnostics that improve on previous ones, such as the popularOmdiagnostic. The diagnostics are derived from both background and perturbed quantities. Using the combination of DESI DR2 BAO and supernova data, with or without CMB data, we find that deviations from flat ΛCDM are at ∼1σ confidence level in most of the redshift range (more than 1σ for a few small redshift intervals in a few cases). When considering SDSS BAO data instead of DESI BAO data, in combination with PantheonPlus, with or without CMB data, we find even smaller deviations. Since spatial curvature can potentially modify the results, we also test for curvature in the general ΛCDM model and the general FLRW model. While there is slight evidence for nonzero cosmic curvature at lower redshifts in a general ΛCDM model, there is no statistically significant evidence in a general FLRW model.more » « less
