Title: Calibration and characterization of the line-VISAR diagnostic at the HED-HIBEF instrument at the European XFEL
In dynamic-compression experiments, the line-imaging Velocity Interferometer System for Any Reflector (VISAR) is a well-established diagnostic used to probe the velocity history, including wave profiles derived from dynamically compressed interfaces and wavefronts, depending on material optical properties. Knowledge of the velocity history allows for the determination of the pressure achieved during compression. Such a VISAR analysis is often based on Fourier transform techniques and assumes that the recorded interferograms are free from image distortions. In this paper, we describe the VISAR diagnostic installed at the HED-HIBEF instrument located at the European XFEL along with its calibration and characterization. It comprises a two-color (532, 1064 nm), three-arm (with three velocity sensitivities) line imaging system. We provide a procedure to correct VISAR images for geometric distortions and evaluate the performance of the system using Fourier analysis. We finally discuss the spatial and temporal calibrations of the diagnostic. As an example, we compare the pressure extracted from the VISAR analysis of shock-compressed polyimide and silicon.  more » « less

  1. X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) sources coupled to high-power laser systems offer an avenue to study the structural dynamics of materials at extreme pressures and temperatures. The recent commissioning of the DiPOLE 100-X laser on the high energy density (HED) instrument at the European XFEL represents the state-of-the-art in combining x-ray diffraction with laser compression, allowing for compressed materials to be probed in unprecedented detail. Here, we report quantitative structural measurements of molten Sn compressed to 85(5) GPa and ∼3500 K. The capabilities of the HED instrument enable liquid density measurements with an uncertainty of ∼1% at conditions which are extremely challenging to reach via static compression methods. We discuss best practices for conducting liquid diffraction dynamic compression experiments and the necessary intensity corrections which allow for accurate quantitative analysis. We also provide a polyimide ablation pressure vs input laser energy for the DiPOLE 100-X drive laser which will serve future users of the HED instrument.

  2. Abstract Atmospheric gravity waves (AGWs) are low-frequency, buoyancy-driven waves that are generated by turbulent convection and propagate obliquely throughout the solar atmosphere. Their proposed energy contribution to the lower solar atmosphere and sensitivity to atmospheric parameters (e.g., magnetic fields and radiative damping) highlight their diagnostic potential. We investigate AGWs near a quiet-Sun disk center region using multiwavelength data from the Interferometric Bidimensional Spectrometer and the Solar Dynamics Observatory. These observations showcase the complex wave behavior present in the entire acoustic-gravity wave spectrum. Using Fourier spectral analysis and local helioseismology techniques on simultaneously observed line core Doppler velocity and intensity fluctuations, we study both the vertical and horizontal properties of AGWs. Propagating AGWs with perpendicular group and phase velocities are detected at the expected temporal and spatial scales throughout the lower solar atmosphere. We also find previously unobserved, varied phase difference distributions among our velocity and intensity diagnostic combinations. Time–distance analysis indicates that AGWs travel with an average group speed of 4.5 km s −1 , which is only partially described by a simple simulation, suggesting that high-frequency AGWs dominate the signal. Analysis of the median magnetic field (4.2 G) suggests that propagating AGWs are not significantly affected by quiet-Sun photospheric magnetic fields. Our results illustrate the importance of multiheight observations and the necessity of future work to properly characterize this observed behavior.

ABSTRACT The line-of-sight peculiar velocities of galaxies contribute to their observed redshifts, breaking the translational invariance of galaxy clustering down to a rotational invariance around the observer. This becomes important when the line-of-sight direction varies significantly across a survey, leading to what are known as ‘wide-angle’ effects in redshift-space distortions. Wide-angle effects will also be present in measurements of the momentum field, i.e. the galaxy density-weighted velocity field, in upcoming peculiar velocity surveys. In this work, we study how wide-angle effects modify the predicted correlation function and power spectrum for momentum statistics, both in autocorrelation and in cross-correlation with the density field. Using both linear theory and the Zel'dovich approximation, we find that deviations from the plane-parallel limit are large and could become important in data analysis for low-redshift surveys. We point out that even multipoles in the cross-correlation between density and momentum are non-zero regardless of the choice of line of sight, and therefore contain new cosmological information that could be exploited. We discuss configuration space, Fourier space, and spherical analyses; providing exact expressions in each case rather than relying on an expansion in small angles. We hope these expressions will be of use in the analysis of upcoming surveys for redshift-space distortions and peculiar velocities.

  4. A high-resolution polarimetric spectroscopy diagnostic is developed to provide a quantitative characterization of the plasma density and magnetic field structures of magnetically driven plasma jets generated in Caltech magnetohydrodynamic jet experiments. The diagnostic distinguishes elliptically polarized emission components by the Zeeman effect and measures the Stark broadening of the Ar II 480.602 nm spectral line [3s23p4(3P)4s 4P5/2–3s23p4(3P)4p 4P5/2°] with sub-millimeter and sub-microsecond resolution, enabling reconstruction of radial profiles of plasma density and vector magnetic fields across the axially uniform jet column. A model incorporating spectroscopic effects, line integration, and a multi-parameter plasma description reconstructs the spectra collected by 128 channels of an optical fiber system. A Markov chain Monte Carlo method inferred model parameters of plasma density, poloidal magnetic flux, and poloidal electric current by minimizing the difference between synthetic and measured data. A comparison with a non-linear regression analysis without model constraints confirmed that the densities obtained directly from line-integrated spectra underestimate the actual local density. The splitting of wavelengths in a polarimetric system is in accordance with the Zeeman effect. The observations show that the classic pinch force is inadequate to balance the radial pressure gradient force. Instead, the pressure gradient force is balanced by a Bernoulli-like inward radial force associated with a stagnating inward radial E×B velocity.

  5. Glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy elemental mapping (GDOES EM), enabled by spectral imaging strategies, is an advantageous technique for direct multi-elemental analysis of solid samples in rapid timeframes. Here, a single-pixel, or point scan, spectral imaging system based on compressed sensing image sampling, is developed and optimized in terms of matrix density, compression factor, sparsifying basis, and reconstruction algorithm for coupling with GDOES EM. It is shown that a 512 matrix density at a compression factor of 30% provides the highest spatial fidelity in terms of the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and complex wavelet structural similarity index measure (cw-SSIM) while maintaining fast measurement times. The background equivalent concentration (BEC) of Cu I at 510.5 nm is improved when implementing the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) sparsifying basis and Two-step Iterative Shrinking/Thresholding Algorithm for Linear Inverse Problems (TwIST) reconstruction algorithm. Utilizing these optimum conditions, a GDOES EM of a flexible, etched-copper circuit board was then successfully demonstrated with the compressed sensing single-pixel spectral imaging system (CSSPIS). The newly developed CSSPIS allows taking advantage of the significant cost-efficiency of point-scanning approaches (>10× vs. intensified array detector systems), while overcoming (up to several orders of magnitude) their inherent and substantial throughput limitations. Ultimately, it has the potential to be implemented on readily available commercial GDOES instruments by adapting the collection optics.
