Abstract: These Chemical Tracer Measurements are part of the BACS (BioAerosol and Convective Storm) campaign. The purpose of the BACS campaign was to characterize the dynamics between convective storms and bioaerosols in a grassland environment. The focus of PI Stone’s group was on characterizing bioaerosol types, concentrations, and sizes during quiescent and convective conditions using offline techniques combined with online instrumentation. These measurements will provide better insight into the impact of convective storms on bioaerosols, allowing for improved modelling and predictions. This archive is for chemical tracer measurements of samples collected using high flow impactors in a soil plot located northwest of the NEON flux tower. The campaigns took place from May 23 – June 17, 2022, and from May 22 – June 23, 2023, and were conducted in northeastern Colorado, with a latitude of 40.816284 N, a longitude of 104.746390 W, and an average altitude of 1654 m. Samples were collected continuously throughout both campaigns, with sample durations ranging from 6-24 hours.

BACS: Pollen Counts Data. Version 1.0
Abstract: These pollen count measurements are part of the BACS (BioAerosols and Convective Storms) campaign. The purpose of the BACS campaign was to characterize the dynamics between convective storms and bioaerosols in a grassland environment. The campaigns took place from May 23 – June 17, 2022 (BACS I), and from May 22 – June 23, 2023 (BACS II), and were conducted in northeastern Colorado at the Central Plains Experimental Range, an NSF National Ecological Observatory Network site, with an average altitude of 1654 m. The associated data is for intact pollen counts collected in soil plot #3 located northwest of the NEON flux tower (40.816279, -104.746411). Samples were collected continuously throughout both campaigns. Measurements are reported at hourly and daily time intervals.

Abstract: This dataset contains the Wideband Integrated Bioaerosol Sensor (WIBS) measurements collected as part of the BACS (BioAerosol and Convective Storm) campaign. This archive is for the Wideband Integrated Bioaerosol Sensor– New electronics Option (WIBS-NEO) which was attached to a flux tower with an elevation of ~9 m. The campaigns took place from May 23 – June 17, 2022, and from May 22 – June 23, 2023, and were conducted in northeastern Colorado, with a latitude of 40.815553 N, a longitude of 104.745622 W, and an average altitude of 1654 m. The WIBS data was collected nearly continuously throughout the campaigns.more » « less

Abstract: The BioAerosols and Convective Storms (BACS) campaign aims to study the concentrations, distributions, types and wet deposition of bioaerosols surrounding periods of convective storms in a grassland environment. This data includes rainwater measurements taken at the Central Plains Experimental Range (CPER), which is a National Ecological Observation Network (NEON) site located in Colorado, USA (40.8155, -104.7456) from May 23 – June 17, 2022, and from May 22 – June 23, 2023. Rainwater samples were collected in soil plot 3 located northwest of the NEON flux tower. Samplers were checked daily, and rainwater was collected for analysis whenever any accumulation was observed.more » « less

Abstract Bioaerosols have important impacts on human health and potentially on weather and climate through aerosol-cloud interactions. Reciprocally, weather systems can have a large impact on bioaerosols both indirectly through ecosystem level influences and by playing a more direct role in bioaerosol emission, deposition, and transport. In this work we discuss the design and initial findings of the BioAerosols and Convective Storms (BACS) field campaigns, a project targeting the interplay of these two effects. Two BACS field campaigns were conducted in the springs of 2022 and 2023, examining the dynamics of speciated and cloud-relevant aerosol and, especially, bioaerosol observations surrounding precipitation events and cold pool outflows from convective storms. A multifaceted deployment strategy was used, leveraging a combination of online and offline measurements of aerosol and bioaerosol distributions, cloud-relevant properties, and chemical tracers in the context of atmospheric state measurements. The observational strategy included measurements at ground level, a 9 m flux tower, and simultaneous stacked-column and profiling multirotor drone measurements and radiosonde launches. Aerosol and bioaerosol responses to precipitation and cold pool events are examined within this manuscript through several case studies highlighting that similar events can produce very different aerosol responses. Reasons for this variability are hypothesized and discussed in the context of our campaign data, and targets for future investigations are suggested.more » « less
