Title: Search for Higgs boson production at high transverse momentum in the WW decay channel in proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s}=13 $$ TeV
Abstract A search for Higgs boson (H) production at high transverse momentum (pT) in the WW decay channel is presented. The analysis uses proton-proton collisions at$$ \sqrt{s}=13 $$ s=13 TeV recorded by the CMS experiment in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. The visible decay products of the Higgs boson are reconstructed as a single large-radius jet with one isolated lepton or none (1ℓand 0ℓ, respectively;ℓ= e,μ). The H-candidate jets are identified using an advanced transformer-based algorithm and are calibrated with the Lund jet plane reweighting technique. The 1ℓchannel is further split into gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and associated production with hadronically decaying vector boson categories, while the 0ℓchannel considers all production processes inclusively. The measured cross section times the H→WW branching fraction relative to the standard model expectation is$$ \mu =-{0.19}_{-0.46}^{+0.48} $$ μ=− 0.19−0.46+0.48 , indicating no evidence of a signal above the background. This measurement represents the first dedicated study of highly Lorentz-boosted H→WW decays, complementing earlier searches for high-pTHiggs boson in other decay channels.  more » « less

  1. Abstract A measurement of the Higgs boson (H) production via vector boson fusion (VBF) and its decay into a bottom quark-antiquark pair ($$ \textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}} $$ bb¯ ) is presented using proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS experiment at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 90.8 fb−1. Treating the gluon-gluon fusion process as a background and constraining its rate to the value expected in the standard model (SM) within uncertainties, the signal strength of the VBF process, defined as the ratio of the observed signal rate to that predicted by the SM, is measured to be$$ {\mu}_{\textrm{Hb}\overline{\textrm{b}}}^{\textrm{qqh}}={1.01}_{-0.46}^{+0.55} $$ μ Hbb¯ qqh = 1.01−0.46+0.55 . The VBF signal is observed with a significance of 2.4 standard deviations relative to the background prediction, while the expected significance is 2.7 standard deviations. Considering inclusive Higgs boson production and decay into bottom quarks, the signal strength is measured to be$$ {\mu}_{\textrm{Hb}\overline{\textrm{b}}}^{\textrm{incl}.}={0.99}_{-0.41}^{+0.48} $$ μ Hbb¯ incl. = 0.99−0.41+0.48 , corresponding to an observed (expected) significance of 2.6 (2.9) standard deviations.

  2. Abstract A measurement of off-shell Higgs boson production in the H∗→ZZ→4ℓ decay channel is presented. The measurement uses 140 fb−1of proton–proton collisions at s=13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider and supersedes the previous result in this decay channel using the same dataset. The data analysis is performed using a neural simulation-based inference method, which builds per-event likelihood ratios using neural networks. The observed (expected) off-shell Higgs boson production signal strength in the ZZ→4ℓ decay channel at 68% CL is 0.87−0.54+0.75 ( 1.00−0.95+1.04 ). The evidence for off-shell Higgs boson production using the ZZ→4ℓ decay channel has an observed (expected) significance of 2.5σ(1.3σ). The expected result represents a significant improvement relative to that of the previous analysis of the same dataset, which obtained an expected significance of 0.5σ. When combined with the most recent ATLAS measurement in the ZZ→2ℓ2ν decay channel, the evidence for off-shell Higgs boson production has an observed (expected) significance of 3.7σ(2.4σ). The off-shell measurements are combined with the measurement of on-shell Higgs boson production to obtain constraints on the Higgs boson total width. The observed (expected) value of the Higgs boson width at 68% CL is 4.3−1.9+2.7 ( 4.1−3.4+3.5 ) MeV.

  3. Abstract An analysis of the production of a Higgs boson (H) in association with a top quark-antiquark pair ($$ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\textrm{H} $$ tt¯H ) or a single top quark (tH) is presented. The Higgs boson decay into a bottom quark-antiquark pair (H →$$ \textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}} $$ bb¯ ) is targeted, and three different final states of the top quark decays are considered, defined by the number of leptons (electrons or muons) in the event. The analysis utilises proton-proton collision data collected at the CERN LHC with the CMS experiment at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV in 2016–2018, which correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. The observed$$ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\textrm{H} $$ tt¯H production rate relative to the standard model expectation is 0.33 ± 0.26 = 0.33 ± 0.17(stat) ± 0.21(syst). Additionally, the$$ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\textrm{H} $$ tt¯H production rate is determined in intervals of Higgs boson transverse momentum. An upper limit at 95% confidence level is set on the tH production rate of 14.6 times the standard model prediction, with an expectation of$$ {19.3}_{-6.0}^{+9.2} $$ 19.3−6.0+9.2 . Finally, constraints are derived on the strength and structure of the coupling between the Higgs boson and the top quark from simultaneous extraction of the$$ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\textrm{H} $$ tt¯H and tH production rates, and the results are combined with those obtained in other Higgs boson decay channels.

  4. Abstract This paper reports a search for Higgs boson pair (hh) production in association with a vector boson ($$W\; {\text {o}r}\; Z$$ WorZ ) using 139 fb$$^{-1}$$ -1 of proton–proton collision data at$$\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {TeV}$$ s=13TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The search is performed in final states in which the vector boson decays leptonically ($$W\rightarrow \ell \nu ,\, Z\rightarrow \ell \ell ,\nu \nu $$ W→ℓν,Z→ℓℓ,νν with$$\ell =e, \mu $$ ℓ=e,μ ) and the Higgs bosons each decay into a pair ofb-quarks. It targetsVhhsignals from both non-resonanthhproduction, present in the Standard Model (SM), and resonanthhproduction, as predicted in some SM extensions. A 95% confidence-level upper limit of 183 (87) times the SM cross-section is observed (expected) for non-resonantVhhproduction when assuming the kinematics are as expected in the SM. Constraints are also placed on Higgs boson coupling modifiers. For the resonant search, upper limits on the production cross-sections are derived for two specific models: one is the production of a vector boson along with a neutral heavy scalar resonanceH, in the mass range 260–1000 GeV, that decays intohh, and the other is the production of a heavier neutral pseudoscalar resonanceAthat decays into aZboson andHboson, where theAboson mass is 360–800 GeV and theHboson mass is 260–400 GeV. Constraints are also derived in the parameter space of two-Higgs-doublet models.

  5. Abstract Three searches are presented for signatures of physics beyond the standard model (SM) inττfinal states in proton-proton collisions at the LHC, using a data sample collected with the CMS detector at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. Upper limits at 95% confidence level (CL) are set on the products of the branching fraction for the decay intoτleptons and the cross sections for the production of a new bosonϕ, in addition to the H(125) boson, via gluon fusion (ggϕ) or in association with b quarks, ranging from$$ \mathcal{O} $$ O (10 pb) for a mass of 60 GeV to 0.3 fb for a mass of 3.5 TeV each. The data reveal two excesses for ggϕproduction with localp-values equivalent to about three standard deviations atmϕ= 0.1 and 1.2 TeV. In a search fort-channel exchange of a vector leptoquark U1, 95% CL upper limits are set on the dimensionless U1leptoquark coupling to quarks andτleptons ranging from 1 for a mass of 1 TeV to 6 for a mass of 5 TeV, depending on the scenario. In the interpretations of the$$ {M}_{\textrm{h}}^{125} $$ Mh125 and$$ {M}_{\textrm{h},\textrm{EFT}}^{125} $$ Mh,EFT125 minimal supersymmetric SM benchmark scenarios, additional Higgs bosons with masses below 350 GeV are excluded at 95% CL.
