Title: Search for pair production of heavy resonances in final states with a photon and large-radius jets in proton-proton collisions at s=13  TeV
A search for the pair production of heavy spin- 1/2 or spin- 3/2 resonances ( t* ) in proton-proton collisions at s=13  TeV is presented. Data collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC from 2016 to 2018 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb−1 are used. The analysis targets benchmark signal scenarios where one t* decays into a top quark ( t ) and a photon ( γ ), and the other into a t quark and a gluon ( g ), i.e., pp→t* t*¯ →ttγg . All-hadronic final states from the t pair decay chain are selected using jet substructure techniques. The signal is probed as a function of the t* candidate mass, which is reconstructed using the photon and a top quark candidate jet. No significant deviation from the background-only hypothesis is found. Observed (expected) upper limits on the signal cross section at 95% confidence level are set, excluding masses of spin- 1/2 t* particles below 930 (930) GeV and spin- 3/2 t* particles below 1330 (1390) GeV. This analysis marks the first search for heavy resonances in the t t¯ γg channel. Exploiting the high-energy photon to reduce the backgrounds, this search achieves sensitivity competitive with pp→t* t*¯ → t t¯ gg searches for spin- 1/2 t* despite the small expected t*→tγ branching fraction.  more » « less

  1. Measurements of the polarization and spin correlation in top quark pairs ( tt¯ ) are presented using events with a single electron or muon and jets in the final state. The measurements are based on proton-proton collision data from the LHC at s=13  TeV collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb−1 . All coefficients of the polarization vectors and the spin correlation matrix are extracted simultaneously by performing a binned likelihood fit to the data. The measurement is performed inclusively and in bins of additional observables, such as the mass of the tt¯ system and the top quark scattering angle in the tt¯ rest frame. The measured polarization and spin correlation are in agreement with the standard model. From the measured spin correlation, conclusions on the tt¯ spin entanglement are drawn by applying the Peres-Horodecki criterion. The standard model predicts entangled spins for tt¯ states at the production threshold and at high masses of the tt¯ system. Entanglement is observed for the first time in events at high tt¯ mass, where a large fraction of the tt¯ decays are spacelike separated, with an expected and observed significance of above 5 standard deviations. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2024CERN

  2. A combination of searches for a new resonance decaying into a Higgs boson pair is presented, using up to 139  fb−1 of pp collision data at s=13  TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The combination includes searches performed in three decay channels: bb¯bb¯ , bb¯τ+τ− , and bb¯γγ . No excess above the expected Standard Model background is observed and upper limits are set at the 95% confidence level on the production cross section of Higgs boson pairs originating from the decay of a narrow scalar resonance with mass in the range 251 GeV–5 TeV. The observed (expected) limits are in the range 0.96–600 fb (1.2–390 fb). The limits are interpreted in the type-I two-Higgs-doublet model and the minimal supersymmetric standard model, and constrain parameter space not previously excluded by other searches. © 2024 CERN, for the ATLAS Collaboration2024CERN

  3. A search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a charm quark-antiquark pair, H→ c c¯ , produced in association with a top quark-antiquark pair ( tt¯ H ) is presented. The search is performed with data from proton-proton collisions at s=13  TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb−1 . Advanced machine learning techniques are employed for jet flavor identification and event classification. The Higgs boson decay to a bottom quark-antiquark pair is measured simultaneously and the observed t t¯ H ( H→b b¯ ) event rate relative to the standard model expectation is 0.91−0.22+0.26 . The observed (expected) upper limit on the product of production cross section and branching fraction σ( t t¯ H)B(H→c c¯ ) is 0.11 (0.13) pb at 95% confidence level, corresponding to 7.8 (8.7) times the standard model prediction. When combined with the previous search for H→ cc¯ via associated production with a W or Z boson, the observed (expected) 95% confidence interval on the Higgs-charm Yukawa coupling modifier, κc , is |κc| <3.5 (2.7), the most stringent constraint to date.

  4. The first four-dimensional amplitude analysis of the B+→ψ(2S)KS0π+ decay is performed with proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at s=13  TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4  fb−1 . The data cannot be fully explained by B+→ψ(2S)K*+ contributions alone. A significantly better description of the data is obtained by adding a T cc¯ + contribution decaying to ψ(2S)π+ . The properties of the T cc¯ + structure are consistent with the exotic state T cc¯1 (4430)+ reported in the isospin-related B¯0→ψ(2S)K−π+ decay. Effects of a possible T cc¯1 (4430)+→ D¯1* (2600)0D+ decay mode on the T cc¯1 (4430)+→ψ(2S)π+ mass distribution are investigated through a Flatté parametrization, providing constraints on the relative decay strength. A description of the T cc¯1 (4430)+ structure using the triangle singularity mechanism is studied and also found to be consistent with the data.

  5. A search for the rare decay B+→ Λ¯ pμ+μ− is performed using proton-proton collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of s =13  TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4  fb−1 . An excess of events is found with respect to the background-only expectation, with a signal significance of 3.5 standard deviations, in the low invariant-mass region of m( Λ¯ p)<2.8  GeV/c2 . The branching fraction is measured to be Blow (B+→ Λ¯ pμ+μ− )= (1.7 0−0.56+0.65 (stat)±0.17(syst)±0.14(ext)) ×10−8 , where the last uncertainty is due to external inputs on B(B+→ J/ψ Λ¯ p )×B(J/ψ→μ+μ−) . With no significant signal observed in the high m(Λ¯p) region above 2.8  GeV/c2 , an upper limit is set to be Bhigh (B+→ Λ¯ pμ+μ− )<2.8(3.7)×10−9 at the 90% (95%) confidence level.
