Title: Measurement of event shapes in minimum-bias events from proton-proton collisions at s=13  TeV
A measurement of event-shape variables is presented, using a data sample produced in a special run with approximately one inelastic proton-proton collision per bunch crossing. The data were collected with the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 64  μb−1 . A number of observables related to the overall distribution of charged particles in the collisions are corrected for detector effects and compared with simulations. Inclusive event-shape distributions, as well as differential distributions of event shapes as functions of charged-particle multiplicity, are studied. None of the models investigated are able to satisfactorily describe the data. Moreover, there are significant features common amongst all generator setups studied, particularly showing data being more isotropic than any of the simulations. Multidimensional unfolded distributions are provided, along with their correlations.  more » « less

  1. A search for collective effects inside jets produced in proton-proton collisions is performed via correlation measurements of charged particles using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The analysis uses data collected at a center-of-mass energy of s=13  TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb−1 . Jets are reconstructed with the anti- kT algorithm with a distance parameter of 0.8 and are required to have transverse momentum greater than 550 GeV and pseudorapidity |ηjet|<1.6 . Two-particle correlations among the charged particles within the jets are studied as functions of the particles’ azimuthal angle and pseudorapidity separations ( Δϕ* and Δη* ) in a jet coordinate basis, where particles’ η* , ϕ* are defined relative to the direction of the jet. The correlation functions are studied in classes of in-jet charged-particle multiplicity up to Nchj≈100 . Fourier harmonics are extracted from long-range azimuthal correlation functions to characterize azimuthal anisotropy for |Δη*| >2 . For low- Nchj jets, the long-range elliptic anisotropic harmonic, v2* , is observed to decrease with Nchj . This trend is well described by Monte Carlo event generators. However, a rising trend for v2* emerges at Nchj≳80 , hinting at a possible onset of collective behavior, which is not reproduced by the models tested. This observation yields new insights into the dynamics of jet evolution in the vacuum. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2024CERN

  2. Heavy-flavor quarks produced in proton-proton (pp) collisions provide a unique opportunity to investigate the evolution of quark-initiated parton showers from initial hard scatterings to final-state hadrons. By examining jets that contain heavy-flavor hadrons, this study explores the effects of both perturbative and nonperturbative QCD on jet formation and structure. The angular differences between various jet axes, Δ Raxis , offer insight into the radiation patterns and fragmentation of charm quarks. The first measurement of D0 -tagged jet axes differences in pp collisions at s=5.02  TeV by the ALICE experiment at the LHC is presented for jets with transverse momentum pTch jet≥10  GeV/c and D0 mesons with pTD0 ≥5  GeV/c . In this D0 -meson-tagged jet measurement, three jet axis definitions, each with different sensitivities to soft, wide-angle radiation, are used: the standard axis, soft drop groomed axis, and winner-takes-all axis. Measurements of the radial distributions of D0 mesons with respect to the jet axes, Δ R axis−D0 , are reported, along with the angle, Δ Raxis , between the three jet axes. The D0 meson emerges as the leading particle in these jets, closely aligning with the winner-takes-all axis and diverging from the standard jet axis. The results also examine how varying the sensitivity to soft radiation with grooming influences the orientation of the soft drop jet axis and uncover that charm-jet structure is more likely to survive grooming when the soft drop axis is further from the D0 direction, providing further evidence of the dead-cone effect recently measured by ALICE.

  3. This paper reports the first measurement of the transverse momentum ( pT ) spectra of primary charged pions, kaons, (anti)protons, and unidentified particles as a function of the charged-particle flattenicity in pp collisions at s=13  TeV . Flattenicity is a novel event shape observable that is measured in the pseudorapidity intervals covered by the V0 detector, 2.8<η<5.1 and −3.7<η<−1.7 . According to QCD-inspired phenomenological models, it shows sensitivity to multiparton interactions and is less affected by biases toward larger pT due to local multiplicity fluctuations in the V0 acceptance than multiplicity. The analysis is performed in minimum-bias (MB) as well as in high-multiplicity events up to pT = 20  GeV/c . The event selection requires at least one charged particle produced in the pseudorapidity interval |η|<1 . The measured pT distributions, average pT , kaon-to-pion and proton-to-pion particle ratios, presented in this paper, are compared to model calculations using 8 based on color strings and EPOS LHC. The modification of the pT -spectral shapes in low-flattenicity events that have large event activity with respect to those measured in MB events develops a pronounced peak at intermediate pT ( 2<pT<8  GeV/c ), and approaches the vicinity of unity at higher pT . The results are qualitatively described by , and they show different behavior than those measured as a function of charged-particle multiplicity based on the V0M estimator. © 2025 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration2025CERN

  4. The polarization of the Λ and Λ¯ hyperons along the beam direction has been measured in proton-lead ( p-Pb ) collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 8.16 TeV. The data were obtained with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 186.0±6.5  nb−1 . A significant azimuthal dependence of the hyperon polarization, characterized by the second-order Fourier sine coefficient Pz,s2 , is observed. The Pz,s2 values decrease as a function of charged particle multiplicity, but increase with transverse momentum. A hydrodynamic model that describes the observed Pz,s2 values in nucleus-nucleus collisions by introducing vorticity effects does not reproduce either the sign or the magnitude of the p-Pb results. These observations pose a challenge to the current theoretical implementation of spin polarization in heavy ion collisions and offer new insights into the origin of spin polarization in hadronic collisions at LHC energies.

  5. A search is presented for high-mass exclusive diphoton production via photon-photon fusion in proton-proton collisions at s=13  TeV in events where both protons survive the interaction. The analysis utilizes data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 103  fb−1 collected in 2016–2018 with the central CMS detector and the CMS and TOTEM precision proton spectrometer (PPS). Events that have two photons with high transverse momenta ( pTγ >100  GeV ), back-to-back in azimuth, and with a large diphoton invariant mass ( mγγ >350  GeV ) are selected. To remove the dominant inclusive diphoton backgrounds, the kinematic properties of the protons detected in PPS are required to match those of the central diphoton system. Only events having opposite-side forward protons detected with a fractional momentum loss between 0.035 and 0.15 (0.18) for the detectors on the negative (positive) side of CMS are considered. One exclusive diphoton candidate is observed for an expected background of 1.1 events. Limits at 95% confidence level are derived for the four-photon anomalous coupling parameters |ζ1| <0.073  TeV−4 and |ζ2| <0.15  TeV−4 , using an effective field theory. Additionally, upper limits are placed on the production of axionlike particles with coupling strength to photons f−1 that varies from 0.03  TeV−1 to 1  TeV−1 over the mass range from 500 to 2000 GeV. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS and TOTEMs Collaboration2024CERN
