Title: Construction and calibration of the DUCK (Detector of Unusual casKades) system modules
In the High-Energy Physics field there is an active search of the origin and the nature of the Ultra-high energy cosmic rays. These are messengers that carry information from far into the Universe, and they might also hint on direction towards new physics. This talk presents the overall hardware and software design, and the construction and calibration of DUCK (Detector system of Unusual Cosmic-ray casKades) main modules. DUCK is a new cosmic-rays detector that is being constructed at the Clayton State University campus that has resolution at the ns-level. The main scientific direction for the DUCK project is to contribute to the approach of cosmic ray event analysis using the full waveform and detector response width. Additionally, it aims to provide an independent verification of the detection of the ‘unusual’ cosmic ray events that were reported by the Horizon-T detector system that may be indicating direction towards the novel physics possibilities.  more » « less

  1. A large mystery that is currently being investigated by the High Energy Physics (HEP) field is the origin and the nature of the Ultra-high energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR). Coming from deep within the Universe, they bring information from afar as well as on possible new physics. This talk reports on the development and design of DUCK (Detector system of Unusual Cosmic-ray casKades), a new cosmic-rays detector at the Clayton State University campus with ns-level detection resolution. The main scientific importance for the DUCK project will be to contribute to the general EAS event analysis methodology novel approach using the full waveform and detector response width, and to an independent verification of the detection of the ‘unusual’cosmic ray events by the Horizon-T detector system that may be indicating direction towards the novel physics possibilities.

  2. The update includes the information on the calibration, design, construction and deployment of core modules of DUCK (Detector system of Unusual Cosmic-ray casKades), a cosmic-rays detector system aimed to study the Extensive Air Shower disk thickness as compared to CORSIKA simulations, to join the efforts in the search for the Cosmic Ray Ensembles and to further study the latest advances in the cosmic-rays field, like studying the multi-modal cosmic ray events. The project involves computer simulation activities, design and construction, data acquisition system design, data collection and analysis, allowing participation of students pursuing not only physics but also other STEM fields, such as Chemistry, Engineering and Computer Science.

  3. High Energy Physics (HEP) is a field that has still has many mysteries that need to be solved. An open question is about the origin and composition of the Ultra-high Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs). These cosmic rays originate well outside our planet, may even be outside of the galaxy. They are messengers that could help us better understand the universe around us and provide insight into the fundamental building blocks of our universe. The primary goal of the Detector of Unusual Cosmic casKades, is to detect and verify the existence of unusual cosmic events. Moreover, it can help innovate EAS (Extensive Atmospheric Shower) analysis methods. This poster aims to highlight developments of the detector system, instrument calibrations and other activities conducted at Clayton State University.

  4. This article covers the prototyping activities for the DUCK (Detector system of Unusual Cosmic ray casKades). The primary goal for the DUCK system is to observe the unusual cosmic events reported by other collaborations, and to look at the possibilities of adding innovations to the EAS (Extensive Atmospheric Shower) analysis methods of the EAS disk measurements at the observation level. The prototyping process has helped to choose between various design possibilities in the process of the optimization of the individual detector design.
