Title: Final SeaQuest Results on the Flavor Asymmetry of the Proton Light-Quark Sea with Proton-Induced Drell-Yan Process
The Fermilab E906/SeaQuest collaboration performed measurements of the Drell-Yan process using 120 GeV proton beams bombarding liquid hydrogen and liquid deuterium targets. A combined analysis of all collected data was performed to obtain the final results for the σpd /2 σpp Drell-Yan cross section ratio covering the kinematic region of 0.13<x<0.45 . The x dependencies of d¯ (x)/ u¯ (x) and d¯(x)−u¯(x) are extracted from these cross section ratios. It is found that d¯(x) is greater than u¯(x) over the entire measured x range, with improved statistical accuracy compared to previous measurements. The new results on d¯(x)/u¯(x) and d¯(x)−u¯(x) are compared to various parton distribution functions and theoretical calculations.  more » « less

  1. Dark matter (DM) models with a conserved particle-antiparticle number, nχ − n χ˜ , and the asymmetry in the cosmological abundance nχ ≠ n χ˜ , are known to be challenged by the existence of old neutron stars (NSs), as the sufficient accumulation of DM will lead to the collapse of NSs into black holes. We demonstrate that the applicability of these constraints is much wider and covers models with symmetric populations of DM, nχ = n χ˜ , as the process of DM capture regulated by a nucleon-DM scattering can be inherently asymmetric, σχn ≠ σ χ˜ n . The asymmetry is induced by the interference of different types of χ−n interactions, provided that their combination is odd under charge conjugation in the DM sector, Cχ , and even under combined parity Pχ+n . We provide a complete analysis of DM-nucleon bilinear χ−n interactions and find that this asymmetry is very generic. Using canonical NS parameters and local DM halo inputs, we exclude spin-averaged scattering cross sections down to σnχ ≳10−46  cm2 at DM mass mχ ≲1010  GeV for the maximally asymmetric capture rate and show that the constraints persist down to very small values of the cross-section asymmetry, A=( σχn − σ χ˜ n )/( σχn + σ χ˜ n )≳10−5 .

  2. A search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a charm quark-antiquark pair, H→ c c¯ , produced in association with a top quark-antiquark pair ( tt¯ H ) is presented. The search is performed with data from proton-proton collisions at s=13  TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb−1 . Advanced machine learning techniques are employed for jet flavor identification and event classification. The Higgs boson decay to a bottom quark-antiquark pair is measured simultaneously and the observed t t¯ H ( H→b b¯ ) event rate relative to the standard model expectation is 0.91−0.22+0.26 . The observed (expected) upper limit on the product of production cross section and branching fraction σ( t t¯ H)B(H→c c¯ ) is 0.11 (0.13) pb at 95% confidence level, corresponding to 7.8 (8.7) times the standard model prediction. When combined with the previous search for H→ cc¯ via associated production with a W or Z boson, the observed (expected) 95% confidence interval on the Higgs-charm Yukawa coupling modifier, κc , is |κc| <3.5 (2.7), the most stringent constraint to date.

  3. The ratio of branching fractions R(D*)=B(B¯→D*τ− ν¯τ )/B(B¯→D*ℓ− ν¯ℓ ) , where ℓ is an electron or muon, is measured using a Belle II data sample with an integrated luminosity of 189  fb−1 at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy e+e− collider. Data is collected at the ϒ(4S) resonance, and one B meson in the ϒ(4S)→BB¯ decay is fully reconstructed in hadronic decay modes. The accompanying signal B meson is reconstructed as B¯→D*τ− ν¯τ using leptonic τ decays. The normalization decay, B¯→D*ℓ− ν¯ℓ , produces the same observable final-state particles. The ratio of branching fractions is extracted in a simultaneous fit to two signal-discriminating variables in both channels and yields R(D*)= 0.262−0.039+0.041 (stat )−0.032+0.035 (syst) . This result is consistent with the current world average and with Standard Model predictions. Published by the American Physical Society2024

  4. Understanding electron neutrino interactions is crucial for measurements of neutrino oscillations and searches for new physics in neutrino experiments. We present the first measurement of the flux-averaged νe + ν¯ e charged-current single charged-pion production cross section on argon using the MicroBooNE detector and data from the NuMI neutrino beam. The total cross section is measured to be [0.93±0.13(stat)±0.27(syst)]×10−39  cm2/nucleon at a mean νe + ν¯ e energy of 730 MeV. Differential cross sections are also reported in electron energy, electron and pion angles, and electron-pion opening angle.

  5. The first four-dimensional amplitude analysis of the B+→ψ(2S)KS0π+ decay is performed with proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at s=13  TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4  fb−1 . The data cannot be fully explained by B+→ψ(2S)K*+ contributions alone. A significantly better description of the data is obtained by adding a T cc¯ + contribution decaying to ψ(2S)π+ . The properties of the T cc¯ + structure are consistent with the exotic state T cc¯1 (4430)+ reported in the isospin-related B¯0→ψ(2S)K−π+ decay. Effects of a possible T cc¯1 (4430)+→ D¯1* (2600)0D+ decay mode on the T cc¯1 (4430)+→ψ(2S)π+ mass distribution are investigated through a Flatté parametrization, providing constraints on the relative decay strength. A description of the T cc¯1 (4430)+ structure using the triangle singularity mechanism is studied and also found to be consistent with the data.
