Title: Search for top squarks in final states with many light-flavor jets and 0, 1, or 2 charged leptons in proton-proton collisions at $$\sqrt{s}=13$$ TeV
Abstract Several new physics models including versions of supersymmetry (SUSY) characterized byR-parity violation (RPV) or with additional hidden sectors predict the production of events with top quarks, low missing transverse momentum, and many additional quarks or gluons. The results of a search for top squarks decaying to two top quarks and six additional light-flavor quarks or gluons are reported. The search employs a novel machine learning method for background estimation from control samples in data using decorrelated discriminators. The search is performed using events with 0, 1, or 2 electrons or muons in conjunction with at least six jets. No requirement is placed on the magnitude of the missing transverse momentum. The result is based on a sample of proton-proton collisions at$$\sqrt{s}=13$$TeV corresponding to 138 fb−1of integrated luminosity collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016–2018. With no statistically significant excess of events observed beyond the expected contributions from the standard model, the data are used to determine upper limits on the top squark pair production cross section in the frameworks of RPV and stealth SUSY. Models with top squark masses less than 700 (930) GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level for RPV (stealth) SUSY scenarios.  more » « less

  1. Abstract A search for dark matter (DM) particles produced in association with bottom quarks is presented. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. The search is performed in a final state with large missing transverse momentum and a pair of jets originating from bottom quarks. No significant excess of data is observed with respect to the standard model expectation. Results are interpreted in the context of a type-II two-Higgs-doublet model with an additional light pseudoscalar (2HDM+a). An upper limit is set on the mass of the lighter pseudoscalar, probing masses up to 260 GeV at 95% confidence level. Sensitivity to the parameter space with the ratio of the vacuum expectation values of the two Higgs doublets, tanβ, greater than 15 is achieved, capitalizing on the enhancement of couplings between pseudoscalars and bottom quarks with high tanβ.

  2. Abstract The paper presents a search for supersymmetric particles produced in proton-proton collisions at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV and decaying into final states with missing transverse momentum and jets originating from charm quarks. The data were taken with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN from 2015 to 2018 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1. No significant excess of events over the expected Standard Model background expectation is observed in optimized signal regions, and limits are set on the production cross-sections of the supersymmetric particles. Pair production of charm squarks or top squarks, each decaying into a charm quark and the lightest supersymmetric particle$$ {\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0 $$ χ~10 , is excluded at 95% confidence level for squarks with masses up to 900 GeV for scenarios where the mass of$$ {\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0 $$ χ~10 is below 50 GeV. Additionally, the production of leptoquarks with masses up to 900 GeV is excluded for the scenario where up-type leptoquarks decay into a charm quark and a neutrino. Model-independent limits on cross-sections and event yields for processes beyond the Standard Model are also reported.

  3. Abstract A search for events with one top quark and missing transverse momentum in the final state is presented. The fully hadronic decay of the top quark is explored by selecting events with a reconstructed boosted top-quark topology produced in association with large missing transverse momentum. The analysis uses 139 fb−1of proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV recorded during 2015-2018 by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The results are interpreted in the context of simplified models for Dark Matter particle production and the single production of a vector-likeTquark. Without significant excess relative to the Standard Model expectations, 95% confidence-level upper limits on the corresponding cross-sections are obtained. The production of Dark Matter particles in association with a single top quark is excluded for masses of a scalar (vector) mediator up to 4.3 (2.3) TeV, assumingmχ= 1 GeV and the model couplingsλq= 0.6 andλχ= 0.4 (a= 0.5 andgχ= 1). The production of a single vector-likeTquark is excluded for masses below 1.8 TeV assuming a coupling to the top quarkκT= 0.5 and a branching ratio forT → Ztof 25%.

  4. Abstract This paper presents a search for top-squark pair production in final states with a top quark, a charm quark and missing transverse momentum. The data were collected with the ATLAS detector during LHC Run 2 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV. The analysis is motivated by an extended Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model featuring a non-minimal flavour violation in the second- and third-generation squark sector. The top squark in this model has two possible decay modes, either$$ {\tilde{t}}_1\to c{\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0 $$ t~1 →c χ~10 or$$ {\tilde{t}}_1\to t{\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0 $$ t~1 →t χ~10 , where the$$ {\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0 $$ χ~10 is undetected. The analysis is optimised assuming that both of the decay modes are equally probable, leading to the most likely final state of$$ tc+{E}_T^{\textrm{miss}} $$ tc+ETmiss . Good agreement is found between the Standard Model expectation and the data in the search regions. Exclusion limits at 95% CL are obtained in the$$ m\left({\tilde{t}}_1\right) $$ m t~1 vs.$$ m\left({\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0\right) $$ m χ~10 plane and, in addition, limits on the branching ratio of the$$ {\tilde{t}}_1\to t{\overset{\sim }{\chi}}_1^0 $$ t~1 →t χ~10 decay as a function ofm($$ {\tilde{t}}_1 $$ t~1 ) are also produced. Top-squark masses of up to 800 GeV are excluded for scenarios with light neutralinos, and top-squark masses up to 600 GeV are excluded in scenarios where the neutralino and the top squark are almost mass degenerate.

  5. Abstract A search for charged-lepton flavour violation (CLFV) in top quark (t) production and decay is presented. The search uses proton-proton collision data corresponding to 138 fb−1collected with the CMS experiment at$$\sqrt{s}={13}$$TeV. The signal consists of the production of a single top quark via a CLFV interaction or top quark pair production followed by a CLFV decay. The analysis selects events containing a hadronically decayingτlepton and a muon of opposite electric charge, as well as at least three jets, one of which is identified as originating from the fragmentation of a bottom quark. Machine learning classification techniques are used to distinguish signal from standard model background events. The results of this search are consistent with the standard model expectations. The upper limits at 95% confidence level on the branching fraction$$\mathcal{B}$$for CLFV top quark decays to a muon, aτlepton, and an up or a charm quark are set at$$\mathcal{B}\left({\text{t}}\to \mu \tau {\text{u}}\right)$$< (0.04, 0.08, and 0.12) × 10−6, and$$\mathcal{B}\left({\text{t}}\to \mu \tau {\text{c}}\right)$$< (0.81, 1.71, and 2.05) × 10−6for scalar, vector, and tensor-like operators, respectively.
