Title: Measurement of the ψ(2S) to J/ψ cross-section ratio as a function of centrality in PbPb collisions at $$ \sqrt{{\textrm{s}}_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ = 5.02 TeV
Abstract The ratio of prompt production cross-sections ofψ(2S) andJ/ψmesons in their dimuon final state is measured as a function of centrality, using data collected by the LHCb detector in PbPb collisions at$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 5.02 TeV, for the first time in the forward rapidity region. The measured ratio shows no dependence on the collision centrality, and is compared to the latest theory predictions and to the recent measurements in literature.  more » « less

  1. Abstract The transverse momentum (pT) and centrality dependence of the nuclear modification factorRAAof prompt and non-prompt J/ψ, the latter originating from the weak decays of beauty hadrons, have been measured by the ALICE collaboration in Pb–Pb collisions at$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 5.02 TeV. The measurements are carried out through the e+e−decay channel at midrapidity (|y| < 0.9) in the transverse momentum region 1.5 <pT< 10 GeV/c. Both prompt and non-prompt J/ψmeasurements indicate a significant suppression forpT> 5 GeV/c, which becomes stronger with increasing collision centrality. The results are consistent with similar LHC measurements in the overlappingpTintervals, and cover the kinematic region down topT= 1.5 GeV/cat midrapidity, not accessible by other LHC experiments. The suppression of prompt J/ψin central and semicentral collisions exhibits a decreasing trend towards lower transverse momentum, described within uncertainties by models implementing J/ψproduction from recombination of c and$$ \overline{\textrm{c}} $$ c¯ quarks produced independently in different partonic scatterings. At high transverse momentum, transport models including quarkonium dissociation are able to describe the suppression for prompt J/ψ. For non-prompt J/ψ, the suppression predicted by models including both collisional and radiative processes for the computation of the beauty-quark energy loss inside the quark-gluon plasma is consistent with measurements within uncertainties.

  2. Abstract We report multi-differential measurements of strange hadron production ranging from mid- to target-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at a center-of-momentum energy per nucleon pair of$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 3 GeV with the STAR experiment at RHIC.$$ {K}_S^0 $$ KS0 meson and Λ hyperon yields are measured via their weak decay channels. Collision centrality and rapidity dependences of the transverse momentum spectra and particle ratios are presented. Particle mass and centrality dependence of the average transverse momenta of Λ and$$ {K}_S^0 $$ KS0 are compared with other strange particles, providing evidence of the development of hadronic rescattering in such collisions. The 4πyields of each of these strange hadrons show a consistent centrality dependence. Discussions on radial flow, the strange hadron production mechanism, and properties of the medium created in such collisions are presented together with results from hadronic transport and thermal model calculations.

  3. Abstract The production ratio ofψ(2S) toJ/ψcharmonium states is presented as a function of multiplicity in proton-lead collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}=8.16 $$ sNN =8.16 TeV, for both prompt and nonprompt sources. The total luminosity recorded by the LHCb experiment corresponds to 13.6 nb−1forpPb collisions and 20.8 nb−1for Pbpcollisions, where the first particle corresponds to the particle traveling towards the detector. Measurements are performed in the dimuon final state at forward (backward) centre-of-mass rapidity, with respect to the proton direction, 1.5< y*<4.0 (−5.0< y*<−2.5) forpPb (Pbp) collisions. A multiplicity dependence of the prompt production ratio is observed inpPb collisions, whereas no dependence is found in nonprompt production, nor in either prompt or nonprompt production in Pbpcollisions. These results suggest that in the Pb-going direction additional suppression mechanisms beyond comover effects may be present, possibly related to the formation of quark-gluon plasma. This highlights a transition from small to large collision systems and provides important insight into the suppression of charmonia in proton-nucleus collisions.

  4. Abstract The production of inclusive, prompt and non-prompt J/ψwas studied for the first time at midrapidity (−1.37< ycms<0.43) in p-Pb collisions at$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 8.16 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The inclusive J/ψmesons were reconstructed in the dielectron decay channel in the transverse momentum (pT) interval 0< pT<14 GeV/cand the prompt and non-prompt contributions were separated on a statistical basis forpT>2 GeV/c. The study of the J/ψmesons in the dielectron channel used for the first time in ALICE online single-electron triggers from the Transition Radiation Detector, providing a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 689 ± 13μb−1. The proton-proton reference cross section for inclusive J/ψwas obtained based on interpolations of measured data at different centre-of-mass energies and a universal function describing thepT-differential J/ψproduction cross sections. ThepT-differential nuclear modification factorsRpPbof inclusive, prompt, and non-prompt J/ψare consistent with unity and described by theoretical models implementing only nuclear shadowing.

  5. Abstract The second-order (v2) and third-order (v3) Fourier coefficients describing the azimuthal anisotropy of prompt and nonprompt (from b-hadron decays) J/ψ, as well as prompt ψ(2S) mesons are measured in lead-lead collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 5.02 TeV. The analysis uses a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.61 nb−1recorded with the CMS detector. The J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed using their dimuon decay channel. Thev2andv3coefficients are extracted using the scalar product method and studied as functions of meson transverse momentum and collision centrality. The measuredv2values for prompt J/ψ mesons are found to be larger than those for nonprompt J/ψ mesons. The prompt J/ψv2values at highpTare found to be underpredicted by a model incorporating only parton energy loss effects in a quark-gluon plasma medium. Prompt and nonprompt J/ψ mesonv3and prompt ψ(2S)v2andv3values are also reported for the first time, providing new information about heavy quark interactions in the hot and dense medium created in heavy ion collisions.
