Title: Coherent photoproduction of ρ0, ω and excited vector mesons in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions
Abstract The invariant-mass distribution for the coherent photoproduction of dipions in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions is measured using data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 224.6 ± 9.6μb−1, collected by the LHCb experiment in 2018 at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy$$ \sqrt{{\textrm{s}}_{\textrm{NN}}}=5.02 $$ sNN =5.02 TeV. In the mass range from 400 to 1200 MeV, the results are consistent with previous experiments, with the spectrum dominated by theρ0meson, which interferes with a nonresonant component, together with a smallerωmeson contribution. In an extended mass range up to 2300 MeV, models previously used do not fit the data and a consistent description requires the introduction of two resonances at masses of 1350 ± 20 MeV and 1790 ± 20 MeV with widths of about 300 MeV. The cross-section for each meson is measured differentially in twelve bins of rapidity from 2.05 to 4.90. Theρ0cross-section increases with rapidity from about 400 to 600 mb and is measured with a typical precision of 8%, while the cross-section times branching fraction for theω,ρ′andρ′′, with the statistical precision of the data, do not have a pronounced rapidity dependence and are between 0.5 and 1.5mb, with uncertainties up to 30%. A large nuclear suppression is observed for theρ0meson compared to expectations based on photoproduction on the proton that use the impulse approximation. Significant suppression is also observed compared to that predicted by elastic scattering described in the Glauber approach, or with the addition of inelastic scattering in a Gribov-Glauber model.  more » « less

  1. Abstract The first measurement ofϕ(1020) meson production in fixed-targetpNe collisions at$$ \sqrt{s_{NN}} $$ sNN = 68.5 GeV is presented. Theϕ(1020) mesons are reconstructed in theirK+K−decay in a data sample consisting of proton collisions on neon nuclei at rest, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 21.7±1.4 nb−1, collected by the LHCb detector at CERN. Theϕ(1020) production cross-section in the centre-of-mass rapidity range of−1.8< y*<0 and transverse momentum range of 800< pT<6500 MeV/cis found to beσ= 182.7 ± 2.7 (stat.) ± 14.1 (syst)μb/nucleon. A double-differential measurement of the cross-section is also provided in four regions of rapidity and six regions of transverse momentum of theϕ(1020) meson and compared with the predictions from Pythia and EPOS4, which are found to underestimate the experimental values.

  2. Abstract The cross section for coherent photonuclear production of J/ψis presented as a function of the electromagnetic dissociation (EMD) of Pb. The measurement is performed with the ALICE detector in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of$$ \sqrt{{\textrm{s}}_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 5.02 TeV. Cross sections are presented in five different J/ψrapidity ranges within |y| < 4, with the J/ψreconstructed via its dilepton decay channels. In some events the J/ψis not accompanied by EMD, while other events do produce neutrons from EMD at beam rapidities either in one or the other beam direction, or in both. The cross sections in a given rapidity range and for different configurations of neutrons from EMD allow for the extraction of the energy dependence of this process in the range 17 <WγPb,n< 920 GeV, whereWγPb,nis the centre-of-mass energy per nucleon of theγPb system. This range corresponds to a Bjorken-xinterval spanning about three orders of magnitude: 1.1 × 10−5<x< 3.3 × 10−2. In addition to the ultra-peripheral and photonuclear cross sections, the nuclear suppression factor is obtained. These measurements point to a strong depletion of the gluon distribution in Pb nuclei over a broad, previously unexplored, energy range. These results, together with previous ALICE measurements, provide unprecedented information to probe quantum chromodynamics at high energies.

  3. Abstract The production of strange hadrons ($$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ KS0 , Λ, Ξ±, and Ω±), baryon-to-meson ratios (Λ/$$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ KS0 , Ξ/$$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ KS0 , and Ω/$$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ KS0 ), and baryon-to-baryon ratios (Ξ/Λ, Ω/Λ, and Ω/Ξ) associated with jets and the underlying event were measured as a function of transverse momentum (pT) in pp collisions at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV and p Pb collisions at$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The inclusive production of the same particle species and the corresponding ratios are also reported. The production of multi-strange hadrons, Ξ±and Ω±, and their associated particle ratios in jets and in the underlying event are measured for the first time. In both pp and p–Pb collisions, the baryon-to-meson and baryon-to-baryon yield ratios measured in jets differ from the inclusive particle production for low and intermediate hadronpT(0.6–6 GeV/c). Ratios measured in the underlying event are in turn similar to those measured for inclusive particle production. In pp collisions, the particle production in jets is compared with Pythia8 predictions with three colour-reconnection implementation modes. None of them fully reproduces the data in the measured hadronpTregion. The maximum deviation is observed for Ξ±and Ω±which reaches a factor of about six. The event multiplicity dependence is further investigated in p−Pb collisions. In contrast to what is observed in the underlying event, there is no significant event-multiplicity dependence for particle production in jets. The presented measurements provide novel constraints on hadronisation and its Monte Carlo description. In particular, they demonstrate that the fragmentation of jets alone is insufficient to describe the strange and multi-strange particle production in hadronic collisions at LHC energies.

  4. Abstract ThepT-differential production cross sections of non-prompt D0, D+, and$$ {\textrm{D}}_{\textrm{s}}^{+} $$ Ds+ mesons originating from beauty-hadron decays are measured in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV. The measurements are performed at midrapidity, |y|<0.5, with the data sample collected by ALICE from 2016 to 2018. The results are in agreement with predictions from several perturbative QCD calculations. The fragmentation fraction of beauty quarks to strange mesons divided by the one to non-strange mesons,fs/(fu+fd), is found to be 0.114 ± 0.016 (stat.) ± 0.006 (syst.) ± 0.003 (BR) ± 0.003 (extrap.). This value is compatible with previous measurements at lower centre-of-mass energies and in different collision systems in agreement with the assumption of universality of fragmentation functions. In addition, the dependence of the non-prompt D meson production on the centre-of-mass energy is investigated by comparing the results obtained at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 5.02 and 13 TeV, showing a hardening of the non-prompt D-mesonpT-differential production cross section at higher$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s . Finally, the$$ \textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}} $$ bb¯ production cross section per unit of rapidity at midrapidity is calculated from the non-prompt D0, D+,$$ {\textrm{D}}_{\textrm{s}}^{+} $$ Ds+ , and$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ Λc+ hadron measurements, obtaining$$ \textrm{d}\sigma /\textrm{d}y=75.2\pm 3.2\left(\textrm{stat}.\right)\pm 5.2{\left(\textrm{syst}.\right)}_{-3.2}^{+12.3}\left(\textrm{extrap}.\right) $$ dσ/dy=75.2±3.2 stat. ±5.2 syst. −3.2+12.3 extrap. μb.

  5. Abstract We report multi-differential measurements of strange hadron production ranging from mid- to target-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at a center-of-momentum energy per nucleon pair of$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 3 GeV with the STAR experiment at RHIC.$$ {K}_S^0 $$ KS0 meson and Λ hyperon yields are measured via their weak decay channels. Collision centrality and rapidity dependences of the transverse momentum spectra and particle ratios are presented. Particle mass and centrality dependence of the average transverse momenta of Λ and$$ {K}_S^0 $$ KS0 are compared with other strange particles, providing evidence of the development of hadronic rescattering in such collisions. The 4πyields of each of these strange hadrons show a consistent centrality dependence. Discussions on radial flow, the strange hadron production mechanism, and properties of the medium created in such collisions are presented together with results from hadronic transport and thermal model calculations.
