Title: Rapidity and multiplicity dependence of charged-particle flow in pPb collisions at $$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}=8.16 $$ TeV
Abstract The elliptic and triangular flow of charged particles are measured using two-particle angular correlations inpPb collisions in the pseudorapidity range 2.0<|η|<4.8. The data sample was collected by the LHCb experiment in 2016 at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}=8.16 $$ sNN =8.16 TeV, containing in total approximately 1.5 billion collision events. Non-flow contributions are obtained in low-multiplicity collisions and subtracted to extract the flow harmonics. The results are presented as a function of event multiplicity and hadron transverse momentum. Comparisons with a full (3+1)D dynamic model indicate that it overestimates the measured elliptic flow. A comparison between the forward and backward regions reveals no significant differences in flow parameters, suggesting that final-state effects may dominate over initial-state effects in the origin of flow in small systems.  more » « less

  1. Abstract The collective behavior of$$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ KS0 and$$ \Lambda /\overline{\Lambda} $$ Λ/Λ¯ strange hadrons is studied by measuring the elliptic azimuthal anisotropy (v2) using the scalar-product and multiparticle correlation methods. Proton-lead (pPb) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 8.16 TeV and lead-lead (PbPb) collisions at$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 5.02 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC are investigated. Nonflow effects in the pPb collisions are studied by using a subevent cumulant analysis and by excluding events where a jet with transverse momentum greater than 20 GeV is present. The strange hadronv2values extracted in pPb collisions via the four- and six-particle correlation method are found to be nearly identical, suggesting the collective behavior. Comparisons of the pPb and PbPb results for both strange hadrons and charged particles illustrate how event-by-event flow fluctuations depend on the system size.

  2. Abstract Event-by-event fluctuations of the event-wise mean transverse momentum,$$\langle p_{\textrm{T}}\rangle $$ ⟨pT⟩ , of charged particles produced in proton–proton (pp) collisions at$$\sqrt{s}$$ s = 5.02 TeV, Xe–Xe collisions at$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$$ sNN = 5.44 TeV, and Pb–Pb collisions at$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$$ sNN = 5.02 TeV are studied using the ALICE detector based on the integral correlator$$\langle \!\langle \Delta p_\textrm{T}\Delta p_\textrm{T}\rangle \!\rangle $$ ⟨ ⟨ΔpTΔpT⟩ ⟩ . The correlator strength is found to decrease monotonically with increasing produced charged-particle multiplicity measured at midrapidity in all three systems. In Xe–Xe and Pb–Pb collisions, the multiplicity dependence of the correlator deviates significantly from a simple power-law scaling as well as from the predictions of the HIJING and AMPT models. The observed deviation from power-law scaling is expected from transverse radial flow in semicentral to central Xe–Xe and Pb–Pb collisions. In pp collisions, the correlation strength is also studied by classifying the events based on the transverse spherocity,$$S_0$$ S0 , of the particle production at midrapidity, used as a proxy for the presence of a pronounced back-to-back jet topology. Low-spherocity (jetty) events feature a larger correlation strength than those with high spherocity (isotropic). The strength and multiplicity dependence of jetty and isotropic events are well reproduced by calculations with the PYTHIA 8 and EPOS LHC models.

  3. Abstract The production ratio ofψ(2S) toJ/ψcharmonium states is presented as a function of multiplicity in proton-lead collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}=8.16 $$ sNN =8.16 TeV, for both prompt and nonprompt sources. The total luminosity recorded by the LHCb experiment corresponds to 13.6 nb−1forpPb collisions and 20.8 nb−1for Pbpcollisions, where the first particle corresponds to the particle traveling towards the detector. Measurements are performed in the dimuon final state at forward (backward) centre-of-mass rapidity, with respect to the proton direction, 1.5< y*<4.0 (−5.0< y*<−2.5) forpPb (Pbp) collisions. A multiplicity dependence of the prompt production ratio is observed inpPb collisions, whereas no dependence is found in nonprompt production, nor in either prompt or nonprompt production in Pbpcollisions. These results suggest that in the Pb-going direction additional suppression mechanisms beyond comover effects may be present, possibly related to the formation of quark-gluon plasma. This highlights a transition from small to large collision systems and provides important insight into the suppression of charmonia in proton-nucleus collisions.

  4. Abstract This paper presents the measurement of the isolated prompt photon inclusive production cross section in pp and p–Pb collisions by the ALICE Collaboration at the LHC. The measurement is performed in p–Pb collisions at centre-of-mass energies per nucleon pair of$$\sqrt{s_{\text {NN}}}={5.02}\,\textrm{TeV}$$ sNN =5.02TeV and 8.16 TeV, as well as in pp collisions at$$\sqrt{s}={5.02}\,\textrm{TeV}$$ s=5.02TeV and 8 TeV. The cross section is obtained at midrapidity$$(|y|<0.7)$$ (|y|<0.7) using a charged-track based isolation momentum$$p_\textrm{T}^{\text {iso,~ch}}<{1.5}\,\textrm{GeV}/c$$ pTiso, ch <1.5GeV/c in a cone with radius$$R=0.4$$ R=0.4 . The data for both collision systems are well reproduced by perturbative QCD (pQCD) calculations at next-to-leading order (NLO) using recent parton distribution functions for free (PDF) and bound (nPDF) nucleons. Furthermore, the nuclear modification factor$$R_{\text {pA}}$$ RpA for both collision energies is consistent with unity for$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ pT $$>{20}\,\textrm{GeV}/c$$ >20GeV/c . However, deviations from unity ($$R_\textrm{pA}<1$$ RpA<1 ) of up to 20% are observed for$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ pT $$<{20}\,\textrm{GeV}/c$$ <20GeV/c with limited significance, indicating the possible presence of nuclear effects in the initial state of the collision. The suppression increases with decreasing$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ pT with a significance of$$2.3\upsigma $$ 2.3σ for a non-zero slope and yields$$R_{\textrm{pA}}<1$$ RpA<1 with a significance of$$1.8\upsigma $$ 1.8σ at$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}={8.16}\,\textrm{TeV}$$ sNN =8.16TeV for$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ pT $$<{20}\,\textrm{GeV}/c$$ <20GeV/c . In addition, a significance of$$1.1\upsigma $$ 1.1σ is observed for$$R_{\textrm{pA}}<1$$ RpA<1 at the lower collision energy$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}={5.02}\,\textrm{TeV}$$ sNN =5.02TeV for$$p_{\textrm{T}} < {14}\,\textrm{GeV}/c$$ pT<14GeV/c . The magnitude and shape of the suppression are consistent with pQCD predictions at NLO using nPDFs that incorporate nuclear shadowing effects in the Pb nucleus.

  5. Abstract The dependence of$$\textrm{f}_{0}$$ f0 (980) production on the final-state charged-particle multiplicity is reported for proton–proton (pp) collisions at the centre-of-mass energy,$$\sqrt{s}=$$ s=  13 TeV. The production of$$\textrm{f}_{0}$$ f0 (980) is measured with the ALICE detector via the$$\textrm{f}_0 (980) \rightarrow \pi ^{+}\pi ^{-}$$ f0(980)→π+π- decay channel in a midrapidity region of$$|y|<$$ |y|<  0.5. The evolution of the integrated yields and mean transverse momentum of f$$_{0}$$ 0 (980) as a function of charged-particle multiplicity measured in pp at$$\sqrt{s}=$$ s=  13 TeV follows the trends observed in pp at$$\sqrt{s}=$$ s=  5.02 TeV and in proton–lead (p–Pb) collisions at$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}=$$ sNN =  5.02 TeV. Particle yield ratios of$$\textrm{f}_{0}$$ f0 (980) to$$\pi ^{\pm }$$ π± and$$\textrm{K}^{*}$$ K ∗ (892)$$^{0}$$ 0 are found to decrease with increasing charged-particle multiplicity. These particle ratios are compared with calculations from the canonical statistical thermal model as a function of charged-particle multiplicity. The thermal model calculations provide a better description of the decreasing trend of particle ratios when no strange or antistrange quark composition for f$$_{0}$$ 0 (980) is assumed, which suggests that the data do not support significant hidden strangeness in the$$\textrm{f}_{0} (980)$$ f0(980) .
