Title: Search for the lepton-flavour-violating decays B0 → K*0τ±e∓
Abstract A first search at LHCb for the lepton-flavour-violating decaysB0→K*0τ±e∓is presented. The analysis is performed using a sample of proton-proton collision data, collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV between 2016 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−1. No significant signal is observed, and upper limits on the branching fractions are determined to be$$ \mathcal{B}\left({B}^0\to {K}^{\ast 0}{\tau}^{-}{e}^{+}\right)<5.9(7.1)\times {10}^{-6} $$ B B0→K∗0τ−e+ <5.97.1×10−6 and$$ \mathcal{B}\left({B}^0\to {K}^{\ast 0}{\tau}^{+}{e}^{-}\right)<4.9(5.9)\times {10}^{-6} $$ B B0→K∗0τ+e− <4.95.9×10−6 at the 90% (95%) confidence level. These results correspond to the current most stringent upper limits forb→sτltransitions.  more » « less

  1. Abstract The lifetimes of the$$ {\varOmega}_c^0 $$ Ωc0 and$$ {\Xi}_c^0 $$ Ξc0 baryons are measured using appcollision dataset collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1. The charm baryons are produced in the fully reconstructed decay chains$$ {\varOmega}_b^{-}\to {\varOmega}_c^0\left(\to p{K}^{-}{K}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right){\pi}^{-} $$ Ωb−→Ωc0 →pK−K−π+ π− and$$ {\Xi}_b^{-}\to {\Xi}_c^0\left(\to p{K}^{-}{K}^{-}{\pi}^{+}\right){\pi}^{-} $$ Ξb−→Ξc0 →pK−K−π+ π− . The measurement uses topologically and kinematically similarB−→D0(→K−K+π−π+)π−decays for normalisation. The measured lifetimes are$$ {\displaystyle \begin{array}{c}{\tau}_{\varOmega_c^0}=276.3\pm 19.4\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 1.8\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.7\left({\tau}_{D^0}\right)\textrm{fs},\\ {}{\tau}_{\Xi_c^0}=149.2\pm 2.5\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.9\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.4\ \left({\tau}_{D^0}\right)\textrm{fs},\end{array}} $$ τΩc0 =276.3±19.4stat±1.8syst±0.7 τD0 fs, τΞc0 =149.2±2.5stat±0.9syst±0.4 τD0 fs, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third due to the uncertainty of theD0lifetime. These results are consistent with previous measurements performed by the LHCb experiment.

  2. Abstract We present measurements of the branching fractions of eight$$ {\overline{B}}^0 $$ B¯0 →D(*)+K−$$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ KS ∗0 ,B−→D(*)0K−$$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ KS ∗0 decay channels. The results are based on data from SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions at the Υ(4S) resonance collected with the Belle II detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 362 fb−1. The event yields are extracted from fits to the distributions of the difference between expected and observedBmeson energy, and are efficiency-corrected as a function ofm(K−$$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ KS ∗0 ) andm(D(*)$$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ KS ∗0 ) in order to avoid dependence on the decay model. These results include the first observation of$$ {\overline{B}}^0 $$ B¯0 →D+K−$$ {K}_S^0 $$ KS0 ,B−→D*0K−$$ {K}_S^0 $$ KS0 , and$$ {\overline{B}}^0 $$ B¯0 →D*+K−$$ {K}_S^0 $$ KS0 decays and a significant improvement in the precision of the other channels compared to previous measurements. The helicity-angle distributions and the invariant mass distributions of theK−$$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ KS ∗0 systems are compatible with quasi-two-body decays via a resonant transition with spin-parityJP= 1−for theK−$$ {K}_S^0 $$ KS0 systems andJP= 1+for theK−K*0systems. We also present measurements of the branching fractions of four$$ {\overline{B}}^0 $$ B¯0 →D(*)+$$ {D}_s^{-} $$ Ds− ,B−→D(*)0$$ {D}_s^{-} $$ Ds− decay channels with a precision compatible to the current world averages.

  3. Abstract We point out that using current knowledge of$$ \mathcal{B}\left({K}_L^0\to {\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\right) $$ B KL0→μ+μ− and$$ \mathcal{B}\left({K}_L^0\to \gamma \gamma \right) $$ B KL0→γγ , one can extract short-distance information from the combined measurement of the time-integrated CP asymmetry,ACP(K0→ μ+μ−), and of$$ \mathcal{B}\left({K}_S^0\to {\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\right) $$ B KS0→μ+μ− . We discuss the interplay between this set of observables, and demonstrate that determining sign[ACP(K0→μ+μ−)] would eliminate the discrete ambiguity in the Standard Model prediction for$$ \mathcal{B}\left({K}_L^0\to {\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\right) $$ B KL0→μ+μ− . We then move on to feasibility studies within an LHCb-like setup, using both time-integrated and time-dependent information, employingK0and$$ {\overline{K}}^0 $$ K¯0 tagging methods. We find that, within an optimistic scenario, the short-distance amplitude, proportional to the CKM parameter combination$$ \mid {A}^2{\lambda}^5\overline{\eta}\mid $$ ∣A2λ5η¯∣ , could be constrained by LHCb at the level of about 35% of its Standard Model value, and the discrete ambiguity in$$ \mathcal{B}{\left({K}_L^0\to {\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\right)}_{\textrm{SM}} $$ B KL0→μ+μ− SM could be resolved at more than 3σby the end of the high luminosity LHC.

  4. Abstract A time-integrated angular analysis of the decay$$ {B}_s^0\to J/\psi {\overline{K}}^{\ast }{(892)}^0 $$ Bs0→J/ψK¯∗8920 , withJ/ψ→μ+μ−and$$ {\overline{K}}^{\ast }{(892)}^0\to {K}^{-}{\pi}^{+} $$ K¯∗8920→K−π+ , is presented. The analysis employs a sample of proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment during 2015–2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb−1. A simultaneous maximum-likelihood fit is performed to the angular distributions in bins of theK−π+mass. This fit yields measurements of theCP-averaged polarisation fractions andCPasymmetries for the P-wave component of theK−π+system. The longitudinal and parallel polarisation fractions are determined to bef0= 0.534 ± 0.012 ± 0.009 andf||= 0.211 ± 0.014 ± 0.005, respectively, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. TheCPasymmetries are measured with 3–7% precision and are found to be consistent with zero. These measurements, along with an updated determination of the branching fraction relative to theB0→J/ψK*0decay, are combined with previous LHCb results, providing the most precise values for these observables to date.

  5. Abstract In this paper we explorepp→W±(ℓ±ν)γto$$ \mathcal{O}\left(1/{\Lambda}^4\right) $$ O 1/Λ4 in the SMEFT expansion. Calculations to this order are necessary to properly capture SMEFT contributions that grow with energy, as the interference between energy-enhanced SMEFT effects at$$ \mathcal{O}\left(1/{\Lambda}^2\right) $$ O 1/Λ2 and the Standard Model is suppressed. We find that there are several dimension eight operators that interfere with the Standard Model and lead to the same energy growth, ~$$ \mathcal{O}\left({E}^4/{\Lambda}^4\right) $$ O E4/Λ4 , as dimension six squared. While energy-enhanced SMEFT contributions are a main focus, our calculation includes the complete set of$$ \mathcal{O}\left(1/{\Lambda}^4\right) $$ O 1/Λ4 SMEFT effects consistent with U(3)5flavor symmetry. Additionally, we include the decay of theW±→ ℓ±ν, making the calculation actually$$ \overline{q}{q}^{\prime}\to {\ell}^{\pm}\nu \gamma $$ q¯q′→ℓ±νγ . As such, we are able to study the impact of non-resonant SMEFT operators, such as$$ \left({L}^{\dagger }{\overline{\sigma}}^{\mu }{\tau}^IL\right)\left({Q}^{\dagger }{\overline{\sigma}}^{\nu }{\tau}^IQ\right) $$ L†σ¯μτIL Q†σ¯ντIQ Bμν, which contribute to$$ \overline{q}{q}^{\prime}\to {\ell}^{\pm}\nu \gamma $$ q¯q′→ℓ±νγ directly and not to$$ \overline{q}{q}^{\prime}\to {W}^{\pm}\gamma $$ q¯q′→W±γ . We show several distributions to illustrate the shape differences of the different contributions.
