Title: Measurement of ψ(2S) to J/ψ cross-section ratio as function of multiplicity in pPb collisions at $$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}=8.16 $$ TeV
Abstract The production ratio ofψ(2S) toJ/ψcharmonium states is presented as a function of multiplicity in proton-lead collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}=8.16 $$ sNN =8.16 TeV, for both prompt and nonprompt sources. The total luminosity recorded by the LHCb experiment corresponds to 13.6 nb−1forpPb collisions and 20.8 nb−1for Pbpcollisions, where the first particle corresponds to the particle traveling towards the detector. Measurements are performed in the dimuon final state at forward (backward) centre-of-mass rapidity, with respect to the proton direction, 1.5< y*<4.0 (−5.0< y*<−2.5) forpPb (Pbp) collisions. A multiplicity dependence of the prompt production ratio is observed inpPb collisions, whereas no dependence is found in nonprompt production, nor in either prompt or nonprompt production in Pbpcollisions. These results suggest that in the Pb-going direction additional suppression mechanisms beyond comover effects may be present, possibly related to the formation of quark-gluon plasma. This highlights a transition from small to large collision systems and provides important insight into the suppression of charmonia in proton-nucleus collisions.  more » « less

  1. Abstract The transverse momentum (pT) and centrality dependence of the nuclear modification factorRAAof prompt and non-prompt J/ψ, the latter originating from the weak decays of beauty hadrons, have been measured by the ALICE collaboration in Pb–Pb collisions at$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 5.02 TeV. The measurements are carried out through the e+e−decay channel at midrapidity (|y| < 0.9) in the transverse momentum region 1.5 <pT< 10 GeV/c. Both prompt and non-prompt J/ψmeasurements indicate a significant suppression forpT> 5 GeV/c, which becomes stronger with increasing collision centrality. The results are consistent with similar LHC measurements in the overlappingpTintervals, and cover the kinematic region down topT= 1.5 GeV/cat midrapidity, not accessible by other LHC experiments. The suppression of prompt J/ψin central and semicentral collisions exhibits a decreasing trend towards lower transverse momentum, described within uncertainties by models implementing J/ψproduction from recombination of c and$$ \overline{\textrm{c}} $$ c¯ quarks produced independently in different partonic scatterings. At high transverse momentum, transport models including quarkonium dissociation are able to describe the suppression for prompt J/ψ. For non-prompt J/ψ, the suppression predicted by models including both collisional and radiative processes for the computation of the beauty-quark energy loss inside the quark-gluon plasma is consistent with measurements within uncertainties.

  2. Abstract The production of inclusive, prompt and non-prompt J/ψwas studied for the first time at midrapidity (−1.37< ycms<0.43) in p-Pb collisions at$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 8.16 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The inclusive J/ψmesons were reconstructed in the dielectron decay channel in the transverse momentum (pT) interval 0< pT<14 GeV/cand the prompt and non-prompt contributions were separated on a statistical basis forpT>2 GeV/c. The study of the J/ψmesons in the dielectron channel used for the first time in ALICE online single-electron triggers from the Transition Radiation Detector, providing a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 689 ± 13μb−1. The proton-proton reference cross section for inclusive J/ψwas obtained based on interpolations of measured data at different centre-of-mass energies and a universal function describing thepT-differential J/ψproduction cross sections. ThepT-differential nuclear modification factorsRpPbof inclusive, prompt, and non-prompt J/ψare consistent with unity and described by theoretical models implementing only nuclear shadowing.

  3. Abstract The cross section for coherent photonuclear production of J/ψis presented as a function of the electromagnetic dissociation (EMD) of Pb. The measurement is performed with the ALICE detector in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of$$ \sqrt{{\textrm{s}}_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 5.02 TeV. Cross sections are presented in five different J/ψrapidity ranges within |y| < 4, with the J/ψreconstructed via its dilepton decay channels. In some events the J/ψis not accompanied by EMD, while other events do produce neutrons from EMD at beam rapidities either in one or the other beam direction, or in both. The cross sections in a given rapidity range and for different configurations of neutrons from EMD allow for the extraction of the energy dependence of this process in the range 17 <WγPb,n< 920 GeV, whereWγPb,nis the centre-of-mass energy per nucleon of theγPb system. This range corresponds to a Bjorken-xinterval spanning about three orders of magnitude: 1.1 × 10−5<x< 3.3 × 10−2. In addition to the ultra-peripheral and photonuclear cross sections, the nuclear suppression factor is obtained. These measurements point to a strong depletion of the gluon distribution in Pb nuclei over a broad, previously unexplored, energy range. These results, together with previous ALICE measurements, provide unprecedented information to probe quantum chromodynamics at high energies.

  4. Bound states of charm and anticharm quarks, known as charmonia, have a rich spectroscopic structure that can be used to probe the dynamics of hadron production in high-energy hadron collisions. Here, the cross section ratio of excited ( ψ(2S) ) and ground state (J/ψ) vector mesons is measured as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity in proton-lead ( pPb ) collisions at a center-of-mass (CM) energy per nucleon pair of 8.16 TeV. The data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 175  nb−1 were collected using the CMS detector. The ratio is measured separately for prompt and nonprompt charmonia in the transverse momentum range 6.5<pT<30  GeV and in four rapidity ranges spanning −2.865<yCM<1.935 . For the first time, a statistically significant multiplicity dependence of the prompt cross section ratio is observed in proton-nucleus collisions. There is no clear rapidity dependence in the ratio. The prompt measurements are compared with a theoretical model which includes interactions with nearby particles during the evolution of the system. These results provide additional constraints on hadronization models of heavy quarks in nuclear collisions.

  5. Abstract The second-order (v2) and third-order (v3) Fourier coefficients describing the azimuthal anisotropy of prompt and nonprompt (from b-hadron decays) J/ψ, as well as prompt ψ(2S) mesons are measured in lead-lead collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 5.02 TeV. The analysis uses a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.61 nb−1recorded with the CMS detector. The J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed using their dimuon decay channel. Thev2andv3coefficients are extracted using the scalar product method and studied as functions of meson transverse momentum and collision centrality. The measuredv2values for prompt J/ψ mesons are found to be larger than those for nonprompt J/ψ mesons. The prompt J/ψv2values at highpTare found to be underpredicted by a model incorporating only parton energy loss effects in a quark-gluon plasma medium. Prompt and nonprompt J/ψ mesonv3and prompt ψ(2S)v2andv3values are also reported for the first time, providing new information about heavy quark interactions in the hot and dense medium created in heavy ion collisions.
