Title: Observation of Orbitally Excited Bc+ States
The observation of a wide peaking structure in the Bc+γ mass spectrum is reported using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9  fb−1 . The statistical significance over the background-only hypothesis exceeds seven standard deviations. The width of the observed structure is larger than the expectation from a single-peak hypothesis, and is well described by an effective minimal model consisting of two narrow peaks located at 6704.8±5.5±2.8±0.3  MeV/c2 and 6752.4±9.5±3.1±0.3  MeV/c2 . The uncertainty terms are statistical, systematic, and associated to the knowledge of the Bc+ mass, respectively. The measured peak locations are in line with theoretical predictions for lowest excited P -wave Bc+ states, marking the first observation of orbitally excited beauty-charm mesons and providing important insights into the internal dynamics of hadrons containing two heavy quarks.  more » « less

  1. The first observation of the doubly charmed baryon Ξcc+ is reported through its decay to the Λc+ K−π+ final state, with a statistical significance exceeding seven standard deviations. The observation is made using proton-proton collision data collected in 2024 with the LHCb Run 3 detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13.6 TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 6.9  fb−1 . The Ξcc+ mass is measured to be 3619.97±0.83± 0.26−1.30+1.90   MeV/c2 , where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the unknown Ξcc+ lifetime, which is assumed to lie in the range 15–160 fs with a baseline value of 45 fs. The difference between the masses of the Ξcc+ and Ξcc++ baryons is determined to be −1.77±0.84± 0.15−1.30+1.90   MeV/c2 . This is the first observation of a new particle made with the LHCb Run 3 detector.

  2. Using proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at s =13  TeV in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140  fb−1 , the first full reconstruction of the three vector B meson states, B*+ , B*0 , and Bs*0 , is performed. The mass differences between the excited mesons and their corresponding ground states are measured to be m(B*+)−m(B+)=45.277±0.039±0.027  MeV , m(B*0)−m(B0)=45.471±0.056±0.028  MeV , and m( Bs*0 ) − m( Bs0 ) =49.407±0.132±0.041  MeV , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results improve on the precision of previous measurements by an order of magnitude.

  3. The study of a wide peaking structure in the Bc+γ mass spectrum is reported using a data sample of proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9  fb−1 . The observed structure is consistent with the lowest excited P -wave Bc+ states and exhibits a statistical significance exceeding 7 standard deviations relative to the background-only hypothesis. A two-peak model serves as an effective description of the data, with various theory-constrained models further explored to provide physical interpretation. Based on the predictions for the Bc(1P)+ spectrum, the relative production cross section of the overall Bc(1P)+ states with respect to the Bc+ ground state with the transverse momentum pT and rapidity y of Bc+ mesons in the regions pT<20  GeV/c and 2.0<y<4.5 at s=13  TeV is measured to be 0.20±0.03±0.02±0.03 , where the uncertainty terms represent statistical, systematic, and uncertainties related to the choice of theoretical models, respectively. The results provide a test of theoretical models and deepen our understanding of quantum chromodynamics.

  4. An amplitude analysis of B−→D−D0 KS0 decays is performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9  fb−1 , collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. A resonant structure of spin-parity 0+ is observed in the D0KS0 invariant-mass spectrum with a significance of 5.3σ . The mass and width of the state, modeled with a Breit-Wigner line shape, are determined to be 2883±11±8  MeV/c2 and 87−47+22 ±17  MeV , respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These properties and the quark content are consistent with those of the open-charm tetraquark candidate Tcs0* (2870)0 observed previously in the D+K− final state of the B−→D−D+K− decay. This result confirms the existence of the Tcs0* (2870)0 state in a new decay mode. The Tcs1* (2900)0 state, reported in the B−→D−D+K− decay, is also searched for in the D0KS0 invariant-mass spectrum of the B−→D−D0KS0 decay, without finding evidence for it. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration2025CERN

  5. A comprehensive study of the angular distributions in the bottom-baryon decays Λb0→Λc+h−(h=π,K) , followed by Λc+→Λh+ with Λ→pπ− or Λc+→pKS0 decays, is performed using a data sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9  fb−1 collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. The decay parameters and the associated charge-parity ( CP ) asymmetries are measured, with no significant CP violation observed. For the first time, the Λb0→Λc+h− decay parameters are measured. The most precise measurements of the decay parameters α , β , and γ are obtained for Λc+ decays and an independent measurement of the decay parameters for the strange-baryon Λ decay is provided. The results deepen our understanding of weak decay dynamics in baryon decays. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration2024CERN
