Title: Measurement of the Top-Quark Production Cross Section and Charge Asymmetry at LHCb
The first measurements of the top- and antitop-quark differential production cross sections and the top-quark charge asymmetry in the forward region are presented, using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4  fb−1 . The total production cross sections of top and antitop quarks are also determined. Measurements are performed using the μ+b-jet final state within a fiducial region defined by b -jet pT,jet >50  GeV and pseudorapidity 2.2< ηjet <4.0 , with the muon from the W -boson decay required to have pT,μ >25  GeV and 2.0<ημ<4.5 . The muon and b -jet system must satisfy pT (μ+jet)>20  GeV . The measured integrated production cross sections for the top and antitop quarks are σt =0.95±0.04±0.08±0.02  pb , σ t¯ =0.81±0.03±0.07±0.02  pb , where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third accounts for the luminosity uncertainty. The top-quark charge asymmetry is measured to be ACt =0.08±0.03±0.01 , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. These results are consistent with next-to-leading order Standard Model predictions.  more » « less

  1. Top-quark pair production is observed in lead–lead ( Pb+Pb ) collisions at sNN =5.02  TeV at the Large Hadron Collider with the ATLAS detector. The data sample was recorded in 2015 and 2018, amounting to an integrated luminosity of 1.9  nb−1 . Events with exactly one electron and one muon and at least two jets are selected. Top-quark pair production is measured with an observed (expected) significance of 5.0 (4.1) standard deviations. The measured top-quark pair production cross section is σ t t¯ =3.6  −0.9+1.0 (stat)  −0.5+0.8 (syst)  μb , with a total relative uncertainty of 31%, and is consistent with theoretical predictions using a range of different nuclear parton distribution functions. The observation of this process consolidates the evidence of the existence of all quark flavors in the preequilibrium stage of the quark-gluon plasma at very high energy densities, similar to the conditions present in the early Universe. © 2025 CERN, for the ATLAS Collaboration2025CERN

  2. We present an analysis of the processes e+e−→ηϒ(1S) , ηϒ(2S) , and γXb with Xb→π+π− χbJ , χbJ →γϒ(1S) ( J=1 , 2) reconstructed from γγπ+π−ℓ+ℓ− (ℓ=e,μ) final states in 19.6  fb−1 of Belle II data collected at four energy points near the peak of the ϒ(10753) resonance. Here, Xb is a hypothetical bottomonium-sector partner of the X(3872) . In the process e+e−→ηϒ(2S) , we observe a signal with a significance that exceeds 6.0σ when all energy points are combined. A signal with a significance of 4.2σ is observed at a center-of-mass energy of 10.653 GeV, close to the B*B¯* threshold. At this energy, we measure σ(ηϒ(2S))/σ(π+π−ϒ(2S))>23 at the 90% confidence level, indicating a strong violation of heavy-quark spin symmetry. No significant signal is observed for e+e−→ηϒ(1S) or γXb . Upper limits on the Born cross sections for the processes e+e−→ηϒ(1S) and e+e−→γXb with Xb→π+π− χbJ are determined.

  3. We report measurements of ϒ(1S) , ϒ(2S) and ϒ(3S) production in p+p collisions at s=500  GeV by the STAR experiment in year 2011, corresponding to an integrated luminosity Lint =13  pb−1 . The results provide precise cross sections, transverse momentum ( pT ) and rapidity ( y ) spectra, as well as cross section ratios for pT<10  GeV/c and |y|<1 . The dependence of the ϒ yield on charged particle multiplicity has also been measured, offering new insights into the mechanisms of quarkonium production. The data are compared to various theoretical models: the color evaporation model (CEM) accurately describes the ϒ(1S) production, while the color glass condensate+nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics ( CGC+NRQCD ) model overestimates the data, particularly at low pT . Conversely, the color singlet model (CSM) underestimates the rapidity dependence. These discrepancies highlight the need for further development in understanding the production dynamics of heavy quarkonia in high-energy hadronic collisions. The trend in the multiplicity dependence is consistent with CGC/saturation and string percolation models or ϒ production happening in multiple parton interactions modeled by 8.

  4. A search is performed for charged-lepton flavor violating processes in top quark ( t ) production and decay. The data were collected by the CMS experiment from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb−1 . The selected events are required to contain one opposite-sign electron-muon pair, a third charged lepton (electron or muon), and at least one jet of which no more than one is associated with a bottom quark. Boosted decision trees are used to distinguish signal from background, exploiting differences in the kinematics of the final states particles. The data are consistent with the standard model expectation. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are placed in the context of effective field theory on the Wilson coefficients, which range between 0.024–0.424  TeV−2 depending on the flavor of the associated light quark and the Lorentz structure of the interaction. These limits are converted to upper limits on branching fractions involving up (charm) quarks, t→eμu ( t→eμc ), of 0.032(0.498)×10−6 , 0.022(0.369)×10−6 , and 0.012(0.216)×10−6 for tensorlike, vectorlike, and scalarlike interactions, respectively.

  5. This Letter presents measurements of long-range transverse-momentum correlations using a new observable, v0 ( pT ) , serving as a probe of event-by-event radial-flow fluctuations, the underlying radial expansion, and the medium’s properties in heavy-ion collisions. Results are reported for inclusive charged particles, pions, kaons, and protons across various centrality intervals in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN =5.02  TeV , recorded by the ALICE detector. A pseudorapidity-gap technique, similar to that used in anisotropic-flow studies, is employed to suppress short-range correlations. At low pT , a characteristic mass ordering consistent with hydrodynamic collective flow is observed. At higher pT ( >3  GeV/c ), protons exhibit larger v0(pT) than pions and kaons, in agreement with expectations from quark-recombination models. Comparisons to viscous hydrodynamic calculations with varying bulk viscosity and equation of state demonstrate the sensitivity of the v0(pT) observable to these key medium properties. The findings establish v0(pT) as a valuable addition to the set of observables used in Bayesian analyses for extracting the transport properties and constraining the equation of state of strongly interacting matter, while also helping to systematically explore its sensitivity and impact within such global studies.
