Title: Measurements of the inclusive W and Z boson production cross sections and their ratios in proton-proton collisions at $$\sqrt{s}=13.6$$ TeV
Abstract Measurements are presented of the W and Z boson production cross sections in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13.6 TeV. Data collected in 2022 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.01 fb−1with one or two identified muons in the final state are analyzed. The results for the products of total inclusive cross sections and branching fractions for muonic decays of W and Z bosons are$${11}.{93}\pm 0.0{8}\left({\text{syst}}\right)\pm 0.{17}{\left({\text{lumi}}\right)}_{-0.07}^{+0.07}$$(acceptance) nb for W+boson production,$$8.86\pm 0.06\left({\text{syst}}\right)\pm 0.12{\left({\text{lu}}{\text{mi}}\right)}_{-0.06}^{+0.05}$$(acceptance) nb for W−boson production, and$$2.021\pm 0.009\left({\text{syst}}\right)\pm 0.028{\left({\text{lumi}}\right)}_{-0.013}^{+0.011}$$(acceptance) nb for the Z boson production in the dimuon mass range of 60–120 GeV, all with negligible statistical uncertainties. Furthermore, the corresponding fiducial cross sections, as well as cross section ratios for both fiducial and total phase space, are provided. The ratios include charge-separated results for W boson production (W+and W−) and the sum of the two contributions (W±), each relative to the measured Z boson production cross section. Additionally, the ratio of the measured cross sections for W+and W−boson production is reported. All measurements are in agreement with theoretical predictions, calculated at next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in quantum chromodynamics.  more » « less

  1. Abstract Measurements of fiducial and total inclusive cross sections for W and Z boson production are presented in proton-proton collisions at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 5.02 and 13 TeV. Electron and muon decay modes (ℓ= e orμ) are studied in the data collected with the CMS detector in 2017, in dedicated runs with reduced instantaneous luminosity. The data sets correspond to integrated luminosities of 298 ± 6 pb−1at 5.02 TeV and 206 ± 5 pb−1at 13 TeV. Measured values of the products of the total inclusive cross sections and the branching fractions at 5.02 TeV areσ(pp→W + X)$$ \mathcal{B} $$ B (W→ ℓν) = 7300±10 (stat)±60 (syst)±140 (lumi) pb, andσ(pp→Z+X)$$ \mathcal{B} $$ B (Z→ ℓ+ℓ−) = 669±2 (stat)±6 (syst)±13 (lumi) pb for the dilepton invariant mass in the range of 60–120 GeV. The corresponding results at 13 TeV are 20480±10 (stat)±170 (syst)±470 (lumi) pb and 1952±4 (stat)±18 (syst)±45 (lumi) pb. The measured values agree with cross section calculations at next-to-next-to-leading-order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Fiducial and total inclusive cross sections, ratios of cross sections of W+and W−production as well as inclusive W and Z boson production, and ratios of these measurements at 5.02 and 13 TeV are reported.

  2. Abstract The first measurement of the inclusive and normalised differential cross sections of single top quark production in association with a W boson in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13.6 TeV is presented. The data were recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2022, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 34.7 fb−1. The analysed events contain one muon and one electron in the final state. For the inclusive measurement, multivariate discriminants exploiting the kinematic properties of the events are used to separate the signal from the dominant top quark-antiquark production background. A cross section of$$ 82.3\pm 2.1{\left(\textrm{stat}\right)}_{-9.7}^{+9.9}\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\pm 3.3\left(\textrm{lumi}\right) $$ 82.3±2.1 stat−9.7+9.9 syst±3.3lumi pb is obtained, consistent with the predictions of the standard model. A fiducial region is defined according to the detector acceptance to perform the differential measurements. The resulting differential distributions are unfolded to particle level and show good agreement with the predictions at next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

  3. Abstract Measurements of the inclusive and normalised differential cross sections are presented for the production of single top quarks in association with a W boson in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data used were recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC during 2016–2018, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. Events containing one electron and one muon in the final state are analysed. For the inclusive measurement, a multivariate discriminant, exploiting the kinematic properties of the events is used to separate the signal from the dominant$$ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}} $$ tt¯ background. A cross section of$$ 79.2\pm 0.9{\left(\textrm{stat}\right)}_{-8.0}^{+7.7}\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\pm 1.2\left(\textrm{lumi}\right) $$ 79.2±0.9 stat−8.0+7.7 syst±1.2lumi pb is obtained, consistent with the predictions of the standard model. For the differential measurements, a fiducial region is defined according to the detector acceptance, and the requirement of exactly one jet coming from the fragmentation of a bottom quark. The resulting distributions are unfolded to particle level and agree with the predictions at next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

  4. Abstract The measurements of the Higgs boson (H) production cross sections performed by the CMS Collaboration in the four-lepton (4ℓ, ℓ= e,μ) final state at a center-of-mass energy$$\sqrt{s}$$= 13.6 TeV are presented. These measurements are based on data collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in 2022, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34.7 fb−1. Cross sections are measured in a fiducial region closely matching the experimental acceptance, both inclusively and differentially, as a function of the transverse momentum and the absolute value of the rapidity of the four-lepton system. The H → ZZ → 4ℓinclusive fiducial cross section is measured to be$${2.89}_{-0.49}^{+0.53}{\left({\text{stat}}\right)}_{-0.21}^{+0.29}\left({\text{syst}}\right)$$fb, in agreement with the standard model expectation of$${3.09}_{-0.24}^{+0.27}$$fb.

  5. Abstract Inclusive and differential cross sections for Higgs boson production in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13.6 TeV are measured using data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2022, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34.7 fb−1. Events with the diphoton final state are selected, and the measured inclusive fiducial cross section is$${\sigma }_{\text{fid}}={74}\pm {11}{\left({\text{stat}}\right)}_{-4}^{+5}\left({\text{syst}}\right)$$fb, in agreement with the standard model prediction of 67.8 ± 3.8 fb. Differential cross sections are measured as functions of several observables: the Higgs boson transverse momentum and rapidity, the number of associated jets, and the transverse momentum of the leading jet in the event. Within the uncertainties, the differential cross sections agree with the standard model predictions.
