Title: Search for b -hadron decays to long-lived particles in the CMS endcap muon detectors
A search for long-lived particles originating from the decay of b hadrons produced in proton-proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC is presented. The analysis is performed on a dataset recorded in 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 41.6  fb−1 . Interactions of the long-lived particles in the CMS endcap muon system would create hadronic or electromagnetic showers, producing clusters of detector hits. Selected events contain at least one such high-multiplicity cluster in the muon endcaps and require the presence of a displaced muon. The most stringent upper limits to date on the branching fraction B(B→KΦ) , where the long-lived particle Φ decays to a pair of hadrons, are obtained for Φ masses of 0.3–3.0 GeV and Φ mean proper decay lengths in the range of 1–500 cm.  more » « less

  1. The first observation of the decay Ξb−→ ψ(2S) Ξ− and measurement of the branching ratio of Ξb−→ ψ(2S) Ξ− to Ξb−→J/ψΞ− are presented. The J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed using their dimuon decay modes. The results are based on proton-proton colliding beam data from the LHC collected by the CMS experiment at s=13  TeV in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140  fb−1 . The branching fraction ratio is measured to be B( Ξb− → ψ(2S) Ξ− )/B( Ξb− →J/ψΞ− )=0.8 4−0.19+0.21 (stat)±0.10(syst)±0.02(B) , where the last uncertainty comes from the uncertainties in the branching fractions of the charmonium states. New measurements of the Ξb(5945)0 baryon mass and natural width are also presented, using the Ξb−π+ final state, where the Ξb− baryon is reconstructed through the decays J/ψΞ− , ψ(2S) Ξ− , J/ψΛK− , and J/ψΣ0K− . Finally, the fraction of Ξb− baryons produced from Ξb(5945)0 decays is determined. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2024CERN

  2. A comprehensive study of the angular distributions in the bottom-baryon decays Λb0→Λc+h−(h=π,K) , followed by Λc+→Λh+ with Λ→pπ− or Λc+→pKS0 decays, is performed using a data sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9  fb−1 collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. The decay parameters and the associated charge-parity ( CP ) asymmetries are measured, with no significant CP violation observed. For the first time, the Λb0→Λc+h− decay parameters are measured. The most precise measurements of the decay parameters α , β , and γ are obtained for Λc+ decays and an independent measurement of the decay parameters for the strange-baryon Λ decay is provided. The results deepen our understanding of weak decay dynamics in baryon decays. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration2024CERN

  3. The ratio of branching fractions R(D*)=B(B¯→D*τ− ν¯τ )/B(B¯→D*ℓ− ν¯ℓ ) , where ℓ is an electron or muon, is measured using a Belle II data sample with an integrated luminosity of 189  fb−1 at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy e+e− collider. Data is collected at the ϒ(4S) resonance, and one B meson in the ϒ(4S)→BB¯ decay is fully reconstructed in hadronic decay modes. The accompanying signal B meson is reconstructed as B¯→D*τ− ν¯τ using leptonic τ decays. The normalization decay, B¯→D*ℓ− ν¯ℓ , produces the same observable final-state particles. The ratio of branching fractions is extracted in a simultaneous fit to two signal-discriminating variables in both channels and yields R(D*)= 0.262−0.039+0.041 (stat )−0.032+0.035 (syst) . This result is consistent with the current world average and with Standard Model predictions. Published by the American Physical Society2024

  4. A study is presented of B+→KS0K−π+K+ and B+→KS0K+π−K+ decays based on the analysis of proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9  fb−1 . The KS0Kπ invariant-mass distributions of both B+ decay modes show, in the m( KS0Kπ )<1.85  GeV mass region, large activity which is resolved using an amplitude analysis. A simple model, where JPC amplitudes are described by multiple Breit-Wigner functions with appropriate angular distributions, provides a good description of the experimental data. In this approach a complex mixture of JPC=0−+ , 1++ and 1+− amplitudes is observed that is dominated by η(1405) , η(1470) , η(1760) , f1(1285) , f1(1420) and h1(1405) resonances. The KS0Kπ Dalitz plots are dominated by asymmetric crossing K*K¯ bands which are different for the two B+ decay modes. This is due to a different interference pattern between the 1++ and 1+− amplitudes in the two channels. Branching fractions are measured for each resonant contribution. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration2025CERN

  5. A search for the charmless baryonic decay B+→Λ¯pp¯p is performed using proton-proton collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4  fb−1 . The branching fraction for this decay is measured for the first time relative to that of the topologically similar decay B+→ J/ψK+ , with J/ψ→ Λ¯pK− . The branching fraction is measured to be B(B+→Λ¯pp¯p)=(2.15±0.35±0.12±0.28)×10−7 , where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third arises from the uncertainty in the normalization channel branching fraction. The CP asymmetry is measured to be ACP =(5.4±15.6±2.4)% , where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic. The background-subtracted invariant-mass distributions of Λ¯p and p¯p pairs exhibit pronounced enhancements at both kinematic thresholds, in contrast to a uniform phase-space distribution.
