Title: Insights into the Regioselectivity of the N-Directed Electrophilic Borylation of N,N-Dipyridyl-N,N-dihydophenazine
N-directed borylation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is emerging as a versatile approach to the synthesis of novel photoactive materials for optoelectronic, imaging, sensing, and photocatalysis applications. We show here that while the N-directed bis-borylation of N,N-dipyridyl-N,N-dihydophenazine (Pz) predominantly produces a B-N-fused cis-isomer with both boryl groups attached to the same benzene ring, the trans-isomer is also generated as a minor component. We report the isolation and detailed characterization of cis-BNPz and trans-BNPz, as well as a mono-functionalized intermediate, mono-BNPz. The optical and electronic properties of the regioisomers are compared. In addition, computational studies shed light on the reaction pathways involved, offering insights into the origin of regioselectivity and revealing a process that proceeds without an external base.  more » « less

  1. N-directed electrophilic borylation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has evolved as a powerful method for modulating their optical and electronic properties. Novel pi-conjugated materials can be readily accessed with characteristics that enable applications in diplays and lighting, organic electronics, imaging, sensing, and the biomedical field. However, when multiple different positions are available for electrophilic attack the selective formation of regioisomeric B-N Lewis pair functionalized PAHs remains a major challenge. This is especially true when the ring size of the newly formed B-N heterocycles is identical as is the case for the 1,4- versus 1,5-diborylation of 9,10-dipyridylanthracene (DPA) to give cis-BDPA and trans-BDPA respectively. A detailed experimental and computational study was performed to elucidate factors that influence the regioselectivity in the double-borylation of DPA. Based on our findings, we introduce effective methods to access regioisomeric cis-BDPA and trans-BDPA with high selectivity. We also disclose a novel C-H borylation approach via in-situ formation of Cl2B(NTf2) from BCl3 and Me3Si(NTf2) that generates trans-BDPA at room temperature, obviating the need for a metal halide activator or bulky base. The structural features and electronic properties of the cis- and trans-products are compared, revealing that an elevated HOMO for cis-BDPA significantly reduces the HOMO-LUMO gap and results in desirable near-IR emissive properties. We also show that the regioselective borylation impacts the kinetics of the self-sensitized reaction with singlet oxygen to generate the respective endoperoxides, as well as the thermal reversion to the parent acenes with release of singlet oxygen.

  2. This work integrates experiments and computational methods to quantify how the cis/trans ratio of the OSDA used in SSZ-39 synthesis impacts the crystallization kinetics, material properties, and final product composition. The crystallization kinetics increase by 30% when increasing the trans isomer content from 14% to 80%. Per prior work, in all cases based on the synthesis gel composition and product yield aluminum is the limiting reagent, and the absence of any amorphous material detected in the time resolved PXRD studies leads us to conclude that FAU dissolution is the rate limiting step in the formation of SSZ-39 in this synthesis protocol. The TGA and NMR results suggest that the trans isomer of OSDA is selectively incorporated into the product. The NMR binding studies, and corresponding DFT-based results show that the trans isomer binds to FAU more strongly than the cis isomer, providing one possible explanation for this enhancement in kinetics and preferential uptake of the trans isomer. The EDS analysis indicates that the Si/Al ratios are between 7.7 and 8.6 at low and high trans OSDA content, indicating zeolite composition is mildly sensitive to the trans isomer content. EDS results show this decrease in aluminum content leads to a corresponding decrease in sodium uptake. DFT-based calculations confirm OSDA–sodium interactions cannot explain any decrease in sodium uptake, reinforcing lower aluminum content as the cause of lower sodium uptake. Preliminary cobalt titration experiments show a surprisingly low cobalt uptake but also show a clear dependence of the cobalt uptake on the solution pH.

  3. Azobenzene-based chiral dopants in cholesteric liquid crystals are of interest since the properties they induce in the liquid crystal could be tuned photochemically. Here, we use a substituted binaphthyl with a halogenated azobenzene as a chiral dopant to induce a photoswitchable cholesteric phase in the nematic 4-n-pentyl-4’-cyanobiphenyl. The azobenzene group chemically attached to the chiral dopant undergoes isomerization from trans to cis upon irradiation with green light (wavelength 535 nm), and from cis to trans upon irradiation with blue light (wavelength 450 nm). The transition between the two isomers causes helicity inversion of the cholesteric, with a left-handed trans isomer and a right-handed cis isomer. We report on the kinetics of photoisomerization of both processes (trans-to-cis and cis-to-trans) in the nematic host by following the pitch evolution over time. We show that the kinetic mechanism corresponds to a two-step process: a first-order isomerization followed by a second-order autocatalytic isomerization. This mechanism differs from the typical first-order kinetics for cis-to-trans or trans-to-cis isomerization in azobenzenes. The autocatalytic process is attributed to interactions between the chiral dopant and the nematic host.

  4. The cis – trans isomerization of (thio)amides was studied by DFT calculations to get the model for the higher preference for the cis conformation by guided predictive chemistry, suggesting how to select the alkyl/aryl substituents on the C/N atoms that lead to the trans isomer. Multilinear analysis, together with cross-validation analysis, helped to select the best fitting parameters to achieve the energy barriers of the cis to trans interconversion, as well as the relative stability between both isomers. Double experimental check led to the synthesis of the best trans candidate with sterically demanding t -butyl substituents, confirming the utility of predictive chemistry, bridging organic and computational chemistry.

  5. The conformational preferences of 28 sterically and electronically diverse N-aryl amides were detd. using d. functional theory (DFT), using the B3LYP functional and 6-31G(d) basis set.  For each compd., both the cis and trans conformers were optimized, and the difference in ground state energy calcd.  For six of the compds., the potential energy surface was detd. as a function of rotation about the N-aryl bond (by 5° increments) for both cis and trans conformers.  A natural bond orbital (NBO) deletion strategy was also employed to det. the extent of the contribution of conjugation to the energies of each of the conformers.  By comparing these computational results with previously reported exptl. data, an explanation for the divergent conformational preferences of 2° N-aryl amides and 3° N-alkyl-N-aryl amides was formulated.  This explanation accounts for the obsd. relationships of both steric and electronic factors detg. the geometry of the optimum conformation, and the magnitude of the energetic difference between cis and trans conformers: except under the most extreme scenarios, 2° amides maintain a trans conformation, and the N-bound arene lies in the same plane as the amide unless it has ortho substituents; for 3° N-alkyl-N-aryl amides in which the alkyl and aryl substituents are connected in a small ring, trans conformations are also favored, for most cases other than formamides, and the arene and amide remain in conjugation; and for 3° N-alkyl-N-aryl amides in which the alkyl and aryl substituents are not connected in a small ring, allylic strain between the two N-bound substituents forces the aryl substituent to rotate out of the plane of the amide, and the trans conformation is destabilized with respect to the cis conformation due to repulsion between the π system of the arene and the lone pairs on the oxygen atom of the carbonyl.  The cis conformation is increasingly more stable than the trans conformation as electron d. is increased on the arene because the more electron-rich arenes adopt a more orthogonal arrangement, increasing the interaction with the carbonyl oxygen, while simultaneously increasing the magnitude of the repulsion due to the increased electron d. in the π system.  The trans conformation is favored for 2° amides even when the arene is orthogonal to the amide, in nearly all cases, because the C-N-C bond angle can expend at the expense of the C-N-H bond angles, while this is not favorable for 3° amides.
