Title: Highly boosted dielectron identification in proton-proton collisions at s=13  TeV
A new technique is developed to identify dielectrons ( e+e− ) with Lorentz boost γL>20 that produce one single merged cluster in the electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS detector. The identification uses two multivariate models: one for the case where both electron tracks are reconstructed, and another where only one of the tracks is reconstructed. The efficiency is determined using proton-proton collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Boosted J/ψ mesons decaying into e+e− pairs are used to estimate the efficiency of the model with two tracks, yielding an overall efficiency of 80%. The Z→μ+μ−γ events, where the photon converts into a collimated dielectron, are used for the model with a single track, yielding an efficiency of about 60%. A dedicated energy correction for dielectron candidates is also developed using B±→J/ψK±→e+e−K± data.  more » « less

  1. A measurement of the ratio of branching fractions R(J/ψ)=B(Bc+→J/ψτ+ντ)/B(Bc+→J/ψμ+νμ) in the J/ψ→μ+μ− , τ+→μ+ νμ ν¯ τ decay channel is presented. This measurement uses a sample of proton-proton collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13  TeV by the CMS experiment in 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 59.7  fb−1 . The measured ratio, R(J/ψ)=0.1 7−0.17+0.18 (stat) −0.22+0.21 (syst) −0.18+0.19 (theo) =0.17±0.33 , agrees with the value of 0.2582±0.0038 predicted by the standard model, which assumes lepton flavor universality. By testing lepton flavor universality, this measurement is a probe of new physics using Bc+ mesons, which are currently only produced at the LHC.

  2. The first observation of the concurrent production of two J/ψ mesons in proton-nucleus collisions is presented. The analysis is based on a proton-lead ( pPb ) data sample recorded at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 8.16 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 174.6  nb−1 . The two J/ψ mesons are reconstructed in their μ+μ− decay channels with transverse momenta pT>6.5  GeV and rapidity |y|<2.4 . Events where one of the J/ψ mesons is reconstructed in the dielectron channel are also considered in the search. The pPb→ J/ψJ/ψ+X process is observed with a significance of 5.3 standard deviations. The measured inclusive fiducial cross section, using the four-muon channel alone, is σ(pPb→J/ψJ/ψ+X)=22.0±8.9(stat)±1.5(syst)  nb . A fit of the data to the expected rapidity separation for pairs of J/ψ mesons produced in single (SPS) and double (DPS) parton scatterings yields σSPS pPb→J/ψJ/ψ+X =16.5±10.8(stat)±0.1(syst)  nb and σDPS pPb→J/ψJ/ψ+X =5.4±6.2(stat)±0.4(syst)  nb , respectively. This latter result can be transformed into a lower bound on the effective DPS cross section, closely related to the squared average interparton transverse separation in the collision, of σeff>1.0  mb at 95% confidence level. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2024CERN

  3. Evidence of the production of two Z bosons and a photon in proton-proton collisions is reported for the first time in CMS. The analysis uses data collected by the CMS experiment between 2016 and 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb−1 . Evidence for the process pp→ZZγ→4ℓγ ( ℓ=e , μ ), with an observed (expected) significance of 3.7 (3.1) standard deviations in a fiducial region defined by pTγ >20  GeV , |ηγ|<2.4 , ΔR(ℓ,γ)>0.5 , mZ between 60 and 120 GeV, and the invariant mass of either of the two Z bosons combined with the photon ( m Zγ ) larger than 100 GeV, is reported. The measured (predicted) fiducial cross section is 60−22+27   ab ( 47.56±0.04  ab ). Additionally, the inclusive production of pp→4ℓγ is studied by removing the m Zγ requirement to include final state radiation where one Z boson decays to 2ℓγ , yielding an observed (expected) significance of 5.0 (4.2) standard deviations and a measured (predicted) fiducial cross section of 156−35+39   ab ( 99.97±0.09  ab ).

  4. We present an analysis of the processes e+e−→ηϒ(1S) , ηϒ(2S) , and γXb with Xb→π+π− χbJ , χbJ →γϒ(1S) ( J=1 , 2) reconstructed from γγπ+π−ℓ+ℓ− (ℓ=e,μ) final states in 19.6  fb−1 of Belle II data collected at four energy points near the peak of the ϒ(10753) resonance. Here, Xb is a hypothetical bottomonium-sector partner of the X(3872) . In the process e+e−→ηϒ(2S) , we observe a signal with a significance that exceeds 6.0σ when all energy points are combined. A signal with a significance of 4.2σ is observed at a center-of-mass energy of 10.653 GeV, close to the B*B¯* threshold. At this energy, we measure σ(ηϒ(2S))/σ(π+π−ϒ(2S))>23 at the 90% confidence level, indicating a strong violation of heavy-quark spin symmetry. No significant signal is observed for e+e−→ηϒ(1S) or γXb . Upper limits on the Born cross sections for the processes e+e−→ηϒ(1S) and e+e−→γXb with Xb→π+π− χbJ are determined.

  5. The first observation of the decay Ξb−→ ψ(2S) Ξ− and measurement of the branching ratio of Ξb−→ ψ(2S) Ξ− to Ξb−→J/ψΞ− are presented. The J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed using their dimuon decay modes. The results are based on proton-proton colliding beam data from the LHC collected by the CMS experiment at s=13  TeV in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140  fb−1 . The branching fraction ratio is measured to be B( Ξb− → ψ(2S) Ξ− )/B( Ξb− →J/ψΞ− )=0.8 4−0.19+0.21 (stat)±0.10(syst)±0.02(B) , where the last uncertainty comes from the uncertainties in the branching fractions of the charmonium states. New measurements of the Ξb(5945)0 baryon mass and natural width are also presented, using the Ξb−π+ final state, where the Ξb− baryon is reconstructed through the decays J/ψΞ− , ψ(2S) Ξ− , J/ψΛK− , and J/ψΣ0K− . Finally, the fraction of Ξb− baryons produced from Ξb(5945)0 decays is determined. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2024CERN
