&lt;p&gt;We present the result of a search for the charged-lepton-flavor violating decay&lt;italic&gt;τ&lt;/italic&gt;&lt;sup&gt;&lt;italic&gt;−&lt;/italic&gt;&lt;/sup&gt;→&lt;italic&gt;μ&lt;/italic&gt;&lt;sup&gt;&lt;italic&gt;−&lt;/italic&gt;&lt;/sup&gt;&lt;italic&gt;μ&lt;/italic&gt;&lt;sup&gt;+&lt;/sup&gt;&lt;italic&gt;μ&lt;/italic&gt;&lt;sup&gt;&lt;italic&gt;−&lt;/italic&gt;&lt;/sup&gt;using a 424 fb&lt;sup&gt;&lt;italic&gt;−&lt;/italic&gt;1&lt;/sup&gt;sample of data recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB&lt;italic&gt;e&lt;/italic&gt;&lt;sup&gt;+&lt;/sup&gt;&lt;italic&gt;e&lt;/italic&gt;&lt;sup&gt;&lt;italic&gt;−&lt;/italic&gt;&lt;/sup&gt;collider. The selection of&lt;italic&gt;e&lt;/italic&gt;&lt;sup&gt;+&lt;/sup&gt;&lt;italic&gt;e&lt;/italic&gt;&lt;sup&gt;&lt;italic&gt;−&lt;/italic&gt;&lt;/sup&gt;→&lt;italic&gt;τ&lt;/italic&gt;&lt;sup&gt;+&lt;/sup&gt;&lt;italic&gt;τ&lt;/italic&gt;&lt;sup&gt;&lt;italic&gt;−&lt;/italic&gt;&lt;/sup&gt;events is based on an inclusive reconstruction of the non-signal tau decay, and on a boosted decision tree to suppress background. We observe one signal candidate, which is compatible with the expectation from background processes. We set a 90% confidence level upper limit of 1&lt;italic&gt;.&lt;/italic&gt;9&lt;italic&gt;×&lt;/italic&gt;10&lt;sup&gt;&lt;italic&gt;−&lt;/italic&gt;8&lt;/sup&gt;on the branching fraction of the&lt;italic&gt;τ&lt;/italic&gt;&lt;sup&gt;&lt;italic&gt;−&lt;/italic&gt;&lt;/sup&gt;&lt;italic&gt;→ μ&lt;/italic&gt;&lt;sup&gt;&lt;italic&gt;−&lt;/italic&gt;&lt;/sup&gt;&lt;italic&gt;μ&lt;/italic&gt;&lt;sup&gt;+&lt;/sup&gt;&lt;italic&gt;μ&lt;/italic&gt;&lt;sup&gt;&lt;italic&gt;−&lt;/italic&gt;&lt;/sup&gt;decay, which is the most stringent bound to date.&lt;/p&gt;</dc:description><dc:publisher>Springer</dc:publisher><dc:date>2024-09-01</dc:date><dc:nsf_par_id>10613133</dc:nsf_par_id><dc:journal_name>Journal of High Energy Physics</dc:journal_name><dc:journal_volume>2024</dc:journal_volume><dc:journal_issue>9</dc:journal_issue><dc:page_range_or_elocation/><dc:issn>1029-8479</dc:issn><dc:isbn/><dc:doi>https://doi.org/10.1007/JHEP09(2024)062</dc:doi><dcq:identifierAwardId>2209481</dcq:identifierAwardId><dc:subject/><dc:version_number/><dc:location/><dc:rights/><dc:institution/><dc:sponsoring_org>National Science Foundation</dc:sponsoring_org></record></records></rdf:RDF>
