We report observations of a Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2021hem that was discovered within 48 hours of last nondetection and is located in an apparently hostless environment. With a peak absoluteB-band magnitude ofMB, max = −19.96 ± 0.29 mag, SN 2021hem lies at the luminous end of the SNe Ia distribution. Its near-infrared andi-band light curves lack the secondary maximum, which is otherwise ubiquitous to normal and 1991T-like SNe Ia. Instead, these properties cause SN 2021hem to closely resemble 2003fg-like events. The slowly evolving light curves (characterized by Δm15(B) = 1.02 ± 0.02 mag;sBV = 0.94 ± 0.05) and the earliest spectrum showing C IIλ6580 andλ7235 absorption lines further support this classification. Other spectroscopic features, including Si IIline diagnostics, resemble those of normal SNe Ia. A fit of a fireball model to the early-time light curves yields a time of first light oftfirst= −16.43+0.45−0.38days relative toB-band maximum. The first photometric detection occurs 1.51+0.45−0.38days before the onset of fireball-like flux rise. This early emission, together with the intrinsic (g − r)0color, is inconsistent with circumstellar or companion interaction. Instead, shallow56Ni mixing or an asymmetric56Ni distribution offers a plausible explanation for the delayed onset of the fireball flux rise, while a double-detonation scenario with a thin helium shell remains a less likely alternative. Notably, SN 2021hem represents the fifth known 2003fg-like SN that has early-time activity or excess flux emission. The estimated mass of radioactive56Ni synthesized in SN 2021hem is 1.00 ± 0.09 M⊙. Deep GTC imaging obtained 2.5 years after the explosion, with an estimated limiting magnitude ofmlim, r = 24.4 mag and a surface-brightness limit ofμlim, r = 26.3 mag arcsec−2, revealed no coincident host. Most faint dwarf and ultradiffuse galaxies (UDGs) are therefore ruled out. Alternatively, if the nearest plausible AGN host galaxy located at a projected distance of 104 kpc is assumed, the progenitor would need to be a hypervelocity star ejected at ≈2200 km s−1from the host by AGN interaction. A faint diffuse feature ≈6 kpc from the SN site has also been detected in the GTC image, and its surface brightness is within the limits of UDGs. It is unclear whether it is a galaxy and is associated with SN 2021hem, however. Based on its large normalized directional light distance (dDLR ≈ 3 − 4) from the SN and its unusual elongation, the probability that this is the candidate host galaxy of SN 2021hem is low. These results identify SN 2021hem as one of the strongest candidates for a hostless SN Ia and underscore the diversity of luminous slowly evolving 2003fg-like explosions and the wide range of environments in which they may occur.more » « lessFree, publicly-accessible full text available February 1, 2027

Abstract The existence of a secondary (in addition to compact object mergers) source of heavy element (r-process) nucleosynthesis, the core-collapse of rapidly rotating and highly magnetized massive stars, has been suggested by both simulations and indirect observational evidence. Here, we probe a predicted signature ofr-process enrichment, a late-time (≳40 days post-burst) distinct red color, in observations of gamma-ray burst supernovae (GRB-SNe), which are linked to these massive star progenitors. We present optical to near-IR color measurements of four GRB-SNe atz≲ 0.4, extending out to >500 days post-burst, obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope and large-aperture ground-based telescopes. Comparison of our observations to models indicates that GRBs 030329, 100316D, and 130427A are consistent with both no enrichment and producing 0.01–0.15M⊙ofr-process material if there is a low amount of mixing between the innerr-process ejecta and outer supernova (SN) layers. GRB 190829A is not consistent with any models withr-process enrichment ≥0.01M⊙. Taken together the sample of GRB-SNe indicates color diversity at late times. Our derived yields from GRB-SNe may be underestimated due tor-process material hidden in the SN ejecta (potentially due to low mixing fractions) or the limits of current models in measuringr-process mass. We conclude with recommendations for future search strategies to observe and probe the full distribution ofr-process produced by GRB-SNe.more » « less

Context. One of the surprising early findings with JWST has been the discovery of a strong “roll-over” or a softening of the absorption edge of Lyαin a large number of galaxies atz≳ 6, in addition to systematic offsets from photometric redshift estimates and fundamental galaxy scaling relations. This has been interpreted as strong cumulative damped Lyαabsorption (DLA) wings from high column densities of neutral atomic hydrogen (H I), signifying major gas accretion events in the formation of these galaxies. Aims.To explore this new phenomenon systematically, we assembled the JWST/NIRSpec PRImordial gas Mass AssembLy (PRIMAL) legacy survey of 584 galaxies atz = 5.0 − 13.4, designed to study the physical properties and gas in and around galaxies during the reionization epoch. Methods. We characterized this benchmark sample in full and spectroscopically derived the galaxy redshifts, metallicities, star formation rates, and ultraviolet (UV) slopes. We defined a new diagnostic, the Lyαdamping parameterDLyα, to measure and quantify the net effect of Lyαemission strength, the H Ifraction in the intergalactic medium, or the local H Icolumn density for each source. The JWST-PRIMAL survey is based on the spectroscopic DAWN JWST Archive (DJA-Spec). We describe DJA-Spec in this paper, detailing the reduction methods, the post-processing steps, and basic analysis tools. All the software, reduced spectra, and spectroscopically derived quantities and catalogs are made publicly available in dedicated repositories. Results. We find that the fraction of galaxies showing strong integrated DLAs withNHI > 1021 cm−2only increases slightly from ≈60% atz ≈ 6 up to ≈65 − 90% atz > 8. Similarly, the prevalence and prominence of Lyαemission is found to increase with decreasing redshift, in qualitative agreement with previous observational results. Strong Lyαemitters (LAEs) are predominantly found to be associated with low-metallicity and UV faint galaxies. By contrast, strong DLAs are observed in galaxies with a variety of intrinsic physical properties, but predominantly at high redshifts and low metallicities. Conclusions. Our results indicate that strong DLAs likely reflect a particular early assembly phase of reionization-era galaxies, at which point they are largely dominated by pristine H Igas accretion. Atz = 8 − 10, this gas gradually cools and forms into stars that ionize their local surroundings, forming large ionized bubbles and producing strong observed Lyαemission atz < 8.more » « less
