In this work, we develop an open-source surgical simulation environment that includes a realistic model obtained by MRI-scanning a physical phantom, for the purpose of training and evaluating a Learning from Demonstration (LfD) algorithm for autonomous suturing. The LfD algorithm utilizes Dynamic Movement Primitives (DMP) and Locally Weighted Regression (LWR), but focuses on the needle trajectory, rather than the instruments, to obtain better generality with respect to needle grasps. We conduct a user study to collect multiple suturing demonstrations and perform a comprehensive analysis of the ability of the LfD algorithm to generalize from a demonstration at one location in one phantom to different locations in the same phantom and to a different phantom. Our results indicate good generalization, on the order of 91.5%, when learning from more experienced subjects, indicating the need to integrate skill assessment in the future.more » « less

Over-the-air federated learning (OTA-FL) is a communicationeffective approach for achieving distributed learning tasks. In this paper, we aim to enhance OTA-FL by seamlessly combining sensing into the communication-computation integrated system. Our research reveals that the wireless waveform used to convey OTA-FL parameters possesses inherent properties that make it well-suited for sensing, thanks to its remarkable auto-correlation characteristics. By leveraging the OTA-FL learning statistics, i.e., means and variances of local gradients in each training round, the sensing results can be embedded therein without the need for additional time or frequency resources. Finally, by considering the imperfections of learning statistics that are neglected in the prior works, we end up with an optimized the transceiver design to maximize the OTA-FL performance. Simulations validate that the proposed method not only achieves outstanding sensing performance but also significantly lowers the learning error bound.more » « less

The short-baseline near detector (SBND), the near detector in the short-baseline neutrino program at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, is located just 110 m from the booster neutrino beam target. Thanks to this close proximity, relative to its front face, neutrinos enter SBND over a range of angles from 0° to approximately 1.6°, enabling the detector to sample variations in the neutrino flux as a function of the angle—a technique known as precision reaction-independent spectrum measurement (PRISM), referred to here as SBND-PRISM. In this paper, we show how muon- and electron-neutrino fluxes vary as a function of the neutrino beam axis angle and how this can be exploited to expand the physics potential of SBND. We make use of a model that predicts an angle-dependent electron-neutrino excess signal to illustrate this effect, such as oscillations. We present how SBND-PRISM provides a method to add robustness against uncertainties in cross-section modeling and, more generally, uncertainties that do not depend on the spatial position of neutrino interaction inside the detector. The fluxes, along with their associated covariance matrices, are made publicly available with this publication.more » « lessFree, publicly-accessible full text available April 1, 2027

We present the measurement of -argon inelastic cross sections using the ProtoDUNE single-phase liquid argon time projection chamber in the incident kinetic energy range of 500–800 MeV in multiple exclusive channels (absorption, charge exchange, and the remaining inelastic interactions). The results of this analysis are important inputs to simulations of liquid argon neutrino experiments such as the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment and the Short Baseline Neutrino program at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. They will be employed to improve the modeling of final state interactions within neutrino event generators used by these experiments, as well as the modeling of -argon secondary interactions within the liquid argon. This is the first measurement of -argon absorption at this kinetic energy range as well as the first ever measurement of -argon charge exchange.more » « lessFree, publicly-accessible full text available June 1, 2027
