  1. These data files contain surface dissolved O2 concentration and dissolved O2/N2 saturation ratio for the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort Seas with relevant accompanying ancillary information. The data are useful for understanding the balance of physical and biological controls driving surface ocean dissolved O2 concentrations and for calculating net biological community production rates. The data were collected with funding from NSF (National Science Foundation) Award 1928684 “High Resolution Observing of Arctic Net Community Productivity with Ships of Opportunity.” These data are being disseminated to the research community with limited processing; an updated version with enhanced data quality control may be available in the future. Data were collected between August 1st, 2024 and Sept 30th, 2024 from the surface underway seawater supply of R/V (research vessel) Sikuliaq over the course of several cruises. Data were collected using a Pro-Oceanus miniTDGP (total dissolved gas pressure instrument), a SBE38 temperature sensor, a SBE45 thermosalinograph, and an Aanderaa 4330 dissolved O2 optode, with occasional outages for instrument maintenance or flow disruptions. Sea level pressure data from a Paroscientific MET4A sensor are also provided.

The data are useful for understanding the balance of physical and biological controls driving surface ocean dissolved O2 concentrations and for calculating net biological community production rates. The data were collected with funding from NSF (National Science Foundation) Award 2053116 “Collaborative Research: Taking the Pulse of the Arctic Ocean - A US Contribution to the International Synoptic Arctic Survey” Data were collected between September 3rd 2022 and October 25th, 2022 from the surface science seawater supply of USCGC (United States Coast Guard Cutter) Healy on Cruise ID HLY2202. The cruise departed from Dutch Harbor, AK (Alaska) and disembarked in Dutch Harbor, AK and sampled waters of the Bering and Chukchi Seas, the Canada Basin up to the North Pole, and then a return path through the Makarov Basin before sampling the Chukchi Shelf again and returning to port.

The cruise departed from Dutch Harbor, Alaska (AK) and disembarked in Dutch Harbor, AK and sampled waters of the Bering and Chukchi Seas, the Canada Basin up to the North Pole, and then a return path through the Makarov Basin before sampling the Chukchi Shelf again and returning to port.

This dataset provides calibrated, high-resolution dissolved oxygen measurements from CTD (conductivity, temperature, and depth) profiles collected during the 2022 HLY2202 expedition aboard the USCGC (United States Coast Guard Cutter) Healy across the Arctic Ocean. The product includes corrected dissolved oxygen concentrations, oxygen saturation, and apparent oxygen utilization (AOU), derived from Winkler-referenced calibration of CTD oxygen sensors. The dataset spans the Canada and Makarov Basin and captures the vertical structure of oxygen from surface to deep waters. These data are intended to support biogeochemical investigations of ventilation, water mass transformation, and remineralization processes that drive oxygen variability in the Arctic Basin. The calibrated oxygen fields enable direct comparison with historical hydrographic surveys, facilitating assessment of spatial gradients, vertical oxygen structure, and decadal-scale changes in dissolved oxygen. The dataset is distributed in NetCDF format to support reproducible analysis and long-term archival.

  5. Providing opportunities for early career researchers to gain leadership experiences in seagoing oceanographic science is critical to maintaining an inclusive and robust research community. While various opportunities exist to attract early career scientists to oceanography through undergraduate research experiences or first-time access to seagoing science, there are notable gaps in helping junior researchers who are already in the oceanographic workforce (junior faculty, research scientists, postdoctoral scholars) step into and embrace leadership roles. This training gap is particularly acute for leadership in field science, especially for remote regions with complicated logistics and unfamiliar platforms and support structures, notably the Arctic and Antarctic. In light of rapid environmental changes occurring at the poles and the importance of these regions in global connectivity, polar-specific training is needed to ensure incoming generations can effectively plan and execute research on icebreakers and ice-capable vessels. Here, we describe two training efforts conducted in 2023 and 2024 specifically tailored to train future leaders in polar seagoing science.

  7. Discrete samples were collected on research cruise ID NRS2022 (-01T, -01S, -02S) between July 12, 2022 and September 5, 2022, and analyzed for oxygen/argon ratios and triple oxygen isotopes. Samples were collected intermittently from the underway seawater supply throughout the cruise, which departed from Homer, Alaska (AK) and sampled waters of the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort Seas, ending in Nome, AK. Samples were also collected at various depths from a selection of conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) casts during the second leg of the cruise (NRS2022_02S). The measurements here contribute to characterizing both the chemical environment and the rates of net and gross biological oxygen production in the Pacific-influenced Arctic.

Data were collected near-continuously over the cruise track which departed from Homer, Alaska (AK) and sampled waters of the Bering, Chukchi and Beaufort seas, ending in Nome, AK. The measurements here contribute to characterizing both the chemical environment and the rate of net biological oxygen production.

This data file contains dissolved O2/Ar saturation ratio measured from the surface uncontaminated seawater system on the US Coast Guard Cutter (USCGC) Healy while transiting from Seward, Alaska USA to Nuuk, Greenland via the Northwest Passage.
