  1. We investigate medium-induced modifications to jet substructure observables that characterize hard components in central Pb-Pb collisions at s N N = 5.02 TeV. Using a multistage Monte Carlo simulation of in-medium jet shower evolution, we explore flavor-dependent medium effects through simulations of inclusive and γ -tagged jets. The results show that quark jets undergo a nonmonotonic modification compared with gluon jets in observables such as the Pb-Pb to p p ratio of the soft drop prong angle r g , the relative prong transverse momentum k T , g , and the groomed mass m g distributions. Due to this nonmonotonic modification, γ -tagged jets, enriched in quark jets, provide surprisingly clear signals of medium-induced structural modifications, distinct from effects dominated by selection bias. Further systematic studies demonstrate that these effects are dominated by recoil medium response. This work highlights the potential of hard substructures in γ -tagged jets as powerful tools for probing the jet-medium interactions in high-energy heavy-ion collisions, in particular by enabling detailed investigations of jet-medium parton scatterings via their associated medium response. All simulations for γ -tagged jet analyses carried out in this paper used triggered events containing at least one hard photon, which highlights the utility of these observables for future Bayesian analysis.

  2. A new framework, called , for the combined study of both hard and soft transverse momentum sectors in high-energy proton-proton ( p p ) and proton-nucleus ( p A ) collisions is set up. A dynamical initial state is set up using the model with transverse locations of hotspots within each incoming nucleon. A hard scattering that emanates from two colliding hotspots is carried out using the Pythia generator. Initial state radiation from the incoming hard partons is carried out in a new module called , which includes the longitudinal location of initial splits. The energy-momentum of both the initial hard partons and their associated beam remnants is removed from the hot spots, depleting the energy-momentum available for the formation of the bulk medium. Outgoing showers are simulated using the generator, and results are presented for both cases, allowing for and not allowing for energy loss. First comparisons between this hard-soft model and single inclusive hadron and jet data from p p and minimum bias p Pb collisions are presented. Single hadron spectra in p p are used to carry out a limited (in number of parameters) Bayesian calibration of the model. Fair comparisons with data are indicative of the utility of this new framework. Theoretical studies of the correlation between jet p T and event activity at mid and forward rapidity are carried out.

  3. An investigation of high-transverse-momentum (high- p T ) photon-triggered jets in proton-proton ( p p ) and ion-ion ( A A ) collisions at s N N = 0.2 and 5.02 TeV is carried out, using the multistage description of in-medium jet evolution. Monte Carlo simulations of hard scattering and energy loss in heavy-ion collisions are performed using parameters tuned in a previous study of the nuclear modification factor ( R A A ) for inclusive jets and high- p T hadrons. We obtain a good reproduction of the experimental data for photon-triggered jet R A A , as measured by the ATLAS detector, the distribution of the ratio of jet to photon p T ( X J γ ), measured by both CMS and ATLAS, and the photon-jet azimuthal correlation as measured by CMS. We obtain a moderate description of the photon-triggered jet I A A , as measured by STAR. A noticeable improvement in the comparison is observed when one goes beyond prompt photons and includes bremsstrahlung and decay photons, revealing their significance in certain kinematic regions, particularly at X J γ > 1 . Moreover, azimuthal angle correlations demonstrate a notable impact of bremsstrahlung photons on the distribution, emphasizing their role in accurately describing experimental results. This work highlights the success of the multistage model of jet modification to straightforwardly predict (this set of) photon-triggered jet observables. This comparison, along with the role played by bremsstrahlung photons, has important consequences on the inclusion of such observables in a future Bayesian analysis. 4. The Collaboration reports a new determination of the jet transport parameter q ̂ in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) using Bayesian inference, incorporating all available inclusive hadron and jet yield suppression data measured in heavy-ion collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This multi-observable analysis extends the previously published Bayesian inference determination of q ̂ , which was based solely on a selection of inclusive hadron suppression data. is a modular framework incorporating detailed dynamical models of QGP formation and evolution, and jet propagation and interaction in the QGP. Virtuality-dependent partonic energy loss in the QGP is modeled as a thermalized weakly coupled plasma, with parameters determined from Bayesian calibration using soft-sector observables. This Bayesian calibration of q ̂ utilizes active learning, a machine-learning approach, for efficient exploitation of computing resources. The experimental data included in this analysis span a broad range in collision energy and centrality, and in transverse momentum. In order to explore the systematic dependence of the extracted parameter posterior distributions, several different calibrations are reported, based on combined jet and hadron data; on jet or hadron data separately; and on restricted kinematic or centrality ranges of the jet and hadron data. Tension is observed in comparison of these variations, providing new insights into the physics of jet transport in the QGP and its theoretical formulation. 5. Abstract Quantum Chromodynamics predicts a phase transition from hadronic matter to quark–gluon plasma (QGP) at high temperatures and energy densities, where quarks and gluons (partons) are no longer confined within hadrons. The QGP forms in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. Anisotropic flow coefficients, quantifying the azimuthal expansion of produced matter, probe QGP properties. Flow measurements in high-energy heavy-ion collisions show a distinctive grouping of anisotropic flow for baryons and mesons at intermediate transverse momentum – a feature associated with flow imparted at the quark level, confirming QGP existence. The observation of QGP-like features in proton–proton and proton–ion collisions has sparked debate about QGP formation in smaller systems. For the first time, we demonstrate the distinctive grouping of anisotropic flow for baryons and mesons in high-multiplicity proton–lead and proton–proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). These results are described by a model including hydrodynamic flow followed by hadron formation via quark coalescence, consistent with the formation of partonic flowing systems in these collisions.

  6. We study parton energy-momentum exchange with the quark gluon plasma (QGP) within a multistage approach composed of in-medium Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi evolution at high virtuality, and (linearized) Boltzmann transport formalism at lower virtuality. This multistage simulation is then calibrated in comparison with high- p T charged hadrons, D mesons, and the inclusive jet nuclear modification factors, using Bayesian model-to-data comparison, to extract the virtuality-dependent transverse momentum broadening transport coefficient q ̂ . To facilitate this undertaking, we develop a quantitative metric for validating the Bayesian workflow, which is used to analyze the sensitivity of various model parameters to individual observables. The usefulness of this new metric in improving Bayesian model emulation is shown to be highly beneficial for future such analyses. Published by the American Physical Society2024

  7. Abstract The azimuthal-correlation distributions between electrons from the decays of heavy-flavor hadrons and associated charged particles in Pb–Pb collisions at$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$$ s NN = 5.02 TeV are reported for the 0–10% and 30–50% centrality classes. This measurement provides access to the jet-like correlation observables in the heavy-flavor sector in Pb–Pb collisions. The analysis is performed for trigger electrons from heavy-flavor hadron decays with transverse momentum$$4< p_\textrm{T}^\textrm{e} < 16~\textrm{GeV}/c$$ 4 < p T e < 16 GeV / c , considering associated particles within the transverse-momentum range$$1< p_\textrm{T}^\textrm{assoc} < 7$$ 1 < p T assoc < 7 $$\textrm{GeV}/c$$ GeV / c , and a pseudorapidity difference of$$|\Delta \eta |<1$$ | Δ η | < 1 between the trigger electron and associated particles. The per-trigger nuclear modification factor ($$I_\textrm{AA}$$ I AA ) is calculated to compare the near- and away-side peak yields to those in pp collisions at$$\sqrt{s} = 5.02$$ s = 5.02 TeV. In 0–10% central collisions, the$$I_\textrm{AA}$$ I AA indicates a hint of enhancement of associated-particle yields with$$p_\textrm{T}<3$$ p T < 3 GeV/con the near side, and a suppression of yields with$$p_\textrm{T}>4$$ p T > 4 GeV/con the away side. The$$I_\textrm{AA}$$ I AA for electron triggers from heavy-flavor hadron decays is compared with that for light-flavor and strange-particle triggers to investigate the dependence on different fragmentation processes and parton-medium dynamics, and is found to be the same within uncertainties.

  8. Abstract The measurement of three-dimensional femtoscopic correlations between identical charged kaons (K±K±) produced in p–Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair$$\sqrt{{s}_{\text{NN}}}=5.02$$TeV with ALICE at the LHC is presented for the first time. This measurement, supplementary to those in pp and Pb–Pb collisions, allows understanding the particle-production mechanisms at different charged-particle multiplicities and provides information on the dynamics of the source of particles created in p–Pb collisions, for which a general consensus does not yet exist. It is shown that the measured source sizes increase with charged-particle multiplicity and decrease with increasing pair transverse momentum. These trends for K±K±are similar to the ones observed earlier in identical charged-pion and$${\text{K}}_{\text{s}}^{0}{\text{K}}_{\text{s}}^{0}$$correlations in Pb–Pb collisions at various energies and inπ±π±correlations in p–Pb collisions at$$\sqrt{{s}_{\text{NN}}}=5.02$$TeV. At comparable multiplicity, the source sizes measured in p–Pb collisions agree within uncertainties with those observed in pp collisions, and there is an indication that they are smaller than those observed in Pb–Pb collisions. The obtained results are also compared with predictions from the hadronic interaction model EPOS 3, which tends to underestimate the source size for the most central collisions and agrees with the data for semicentral and peripheral events. Furthermore, the time of maximal emission for kaons is extracted. It turns out to be comparable with the value obtained in highly peripheral Pb–Pb collisions at the same energy, indicating that the kaon emission evolution is similar to that in p–Pb collisions.

  9. This paper presents the first measurement of the angle between different jet axes (denoted as Δ R axis ) in Pb-Pb collisions. The measurement is carried out in the 0–10 % most-central events at s N N = 5.02 TeV. Jets are assembled by clustering charged particles at midrapidity using the anti- k T algorithm with resolution parameters R = 0.2 and 0.4 and transverse momenta in the intervals 40 < p T ch jet < 140 GeV / c and 80 < p T ch jet < 140 GeV / c , respectively. Measurements at these low transverse momenta enhance the sensitivity to quark-gluon plasma (QGP) effects. A comparison to models implementing various mechanisms of jet energy loss in the QGP suggests that the observed narrowing of the Pb-Pb distribution relative to pp can be explained if quark-initiated jets are more likely to emerge from the medium than gluon-initiated jets. These new measurements disfavor intrajet p T broadening as implemented in a simple model calculation with the Baier-Dokshitzer-Mueller-Peigne-Schiff formalism for energy loss in the QGP. The comparison of Pb-Pb and pp collisions shows sensitivity to the angular scale at which the QGP can resolve two independent splittings, favoring mechanisms that incorporate incoherent energy loss.

  10. Abstract The transverse momentum spectra and integrated yields of anti-$$\Sigma $$ Σ hyperons ($$\overline{\Sigma }^{\pm } $$ Σ ¯ ± ) have been measured in$$\text {pp}$$ pp and$$\text {p}{-}\text {Pb}$$ p - Pb collisions at$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}=5.02$$ s NN = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE experiment. Measurements are performed via the newly accessed decay channel$$\overline{\Sigma }^{\pm } \!\!\rightarrow \mathrm{\overline{n}} \pi ^{\pm }$$ Σ ¯ ± n ¯ π ± . A new method of antineutron reconstruction with the PHOS electromagnetic spectrometer is developed and applied to this analysis. The$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ p T spectra of$$\overline{\Sigma }^{\pm } $$ Σ ¯ ± are measured in the range$$0.5<3$$ 0.5 < p T < 3 GeV/$$c$$ c and compared to predictions of the PYTHIA 8, DPMJET, PHOJET, EPOS LHC and EPOS4 models. The EPOS LHC and EPOS4 models provide the best descriptions of the measured spectra both in$$\text {pp}$$ pp and$$\text {p}{-}\text {Pb}$$ p - Pb collisions, while models which do not account for multiparton interactions provide a considerably worse description at high$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ p T . The total yields of$$\overline{\Sigma }^{\pm } $$ Σ ¯ ± in both$$\text {pp}$$ pp and$$\text {p}{-}\text {Pb}$$ p - Pb collisions are compared to predictions of the Thermal-FIST model and dynamical models PYTHIA 8, DPMJET, PHOJET, EPOS LHC and EPOS4. All models reproduce the total yields in both colliding systems within uncertainties. The nuclear modification factors$$R_\textrm{pPb}$$ R pPb for both$$\overline{\Sigma }^{+} $$ Σ ¯ + and$$\overline{\Sigma }^{-} $$ Σ ¯ - are evaluated and compared to those of protons,$$\Lambda $$ Λ and$$\Xi $$ Ξ hyperons, and predictions of EPOS LHC and EPOS4 models. No deviations of$$R_\textrm{pPb}$$ R pPb for$$\overline{\Sigma }^{\pm } $$ Σ ¯ ± from the model predictions or measurements for other hadrons are found within uncertainties.
