  8. Abstract Background: Reports of fragmentary to articulated remains of dinosaurs (Haya Griva), crocodyliformes (e.g., Zosuchus davidsoni, Zaraasuchus shepardi), and other vertebrate fossils have been reported since 2004 from Zos Canyon in the Nemegt Basin, Mongolia. Zos Canyon is situated northwest of well-exposed deposits of the Djadokhta Formation at Ukhaa Tolgod, and east of exposure of the Baruungoyot and Nemegt formations at the Khulsan and Nemegt localities. Due to differences in sedimentology and fauna reported from Zos Canyon, structural complexity, and a lack of continuous exposures between these better studied locations, the age and stratigraphy of the Zos Canyon deposits have remained unclear. However, with the discovery of multiple new fossil sites, including a large zalamdalestid mammal (Zoslestes gongori), other mammals, dinosaur body fossils and eggs (nests), turtles, crocodyliforms, plants, mollusks, and continental trace fossils, a detailed investigation of the geology, paleoenvironments and paleoecology of the deposits in Zos Canyon was conducted between 2024-2026. Methods: Sedimentology, magnetostratigraphy, ichnology, vertebrate paleontology. Results and Conclusions: This work identified a clear, conformable(?) contact between the Zos Canyon strata and the overlying, sedimentologically distinct, Djadokhta Formation. The term Zos Formation is used to define this new unit and a continuous 155 m-thick stratotype section was measured and described through Zos Canyon starting at the bottom contact with basement to the contact with the Djadokhta Formation. The Zos Formation is divided into lower red beds, middle white beds, and upper red beds that record initial deposition on the margin of a wet eolian system, transitioning into a high-energy fluvial system, and terminating in a low-energy fluvial-floodplain system with well-developed paleosols and ephemeral lakes. This is consistent with the abundance of crocodylians, turtles and mollusks in the fauna. A new U-Pb calcite age (80.4 Ma) from Zos Fm dinosaur eggshell supports correlation with the Javkhlant Formation in the eastern Gobi.
