  1. Abstract

    Hydroxylpyromorphite, Pb5(PO4)3(OH), has been documented in the literature as a synthetic and naturally occurring phase for some time but has not previously been formally described as a mineral. It is fully described here for the first time using crystals collected underground in the Copps mine, Gogebic County, Michigan. Hydroxylpyromorphite occurs as aggregates of randomly oriented hexagonal prisms, primarily between about 20–35 μm in length and 6–10 μm in diameter. The mineral is colorless and translucent with vitreous luster and white streak. The Mohs hardness is ~3½–4; the tenacity is brittle, the fracture is irregular, and indistinct cleavage was observed on {001}. Electron microprobe analyses provided the empirical formula Pb4.97(PO4)3(OH0.69F0.33Cl0.06)Σ1.08. The calculated density using the measured composition is 7.32 g/cm3. Powder X-ray diffraction data for the type material is compared to data previously reported for hydroxylpyromorphite from the talc mine at Rabenwald, Austria, and from Whytes Cleuch, Wanlockhead, Scotland. Hydroxylpyromorphite is hexagonal, P63/m, at 100 K, a = 9.7872(14), c = 7.3070(10) Å, V = 606.16(19) Å3, and Z = 2. The structure [R1 = 0.0181 for 494 F>4σ(F) reflections] reveals that hydroxylpyromorphite adopts a column anion arrangement distinct from other members of the apatite supergroup due to the presence of fluorine and steric constraints imposed by stereoactive lone-pair electrons of Pb2+ cations. The F– anion sites are displaced slightly from hydroxyl oxygen anions, which allows for stronger hydrogen-bonding interactions that may in turn stabilize the observed column-anion arrangement and overall structure. Our modern characterization of hydroxylpyromorphite provides deeper understanding to a mineral useful for remediation of lead-contaminated water.

  2. A<sc>bstract</sc>

    A comprehensive study of the local and nonlocal amplitudes contributing to the decayB0K*0(→K+π)μ+μis performed by analysing the phase-space distribution of the decay products. The analysis is based onppcollision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.4 fb1collected by the LHCb experiment. This measurement employs for the first time a model of both one-particle and two-particle nonlocal amplitudes, and utilises the complete dimuon mass spectrum without any veto regions around the narrow charmonium resonances. In this way it is possible to explicitly isolate the local and nonlocal contributions and capture the interference between them. The results show that interference with nonlocal contributions, although larger than predicted, only has a minor impact on the Wilson Coefficients determined from the fit to the data. For the local contributions, the Wilson Coefficient$$ {\mathcal{C}}_9 $$C9, responsible for vector dimuon currents, exhibits a 2.1σdeviation from the Standard Model expectation. The Wilson Coefficients$$ {\mathcal{C}}_{10} $$C10,$$ {\mathcal{C}}_9^{\prime } $$C9and$$ {\mathcal{C}}_{10}^{\prime } $$C10are all in better agreement than$$ {\mathcal{C}}_9 $$C9with the Standard Model and the global significance is at the level of 1.5σ. The model used also accounts for nonlocal contributions fromB0→ K*0[τ+τ→ μ+μ] rescattering, resulting in the first direct measurement of thebsττvector effective-coupling$$ {\mathcal{C}}_{9\tau } $$C9τ.

  3. A search for hidden-charm pentaquark states decaying to a range ofΣcD¯andΛc+D¯final states, as well as doubly charmed pentaquark states toΣcDandΛc+D, is made using samples of proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of5.7fb1recorded by the LHCb detector ats=13TeV. Since no significant signals are found, upper limits are set on the pentaquark yields relative to that of theΛc+baryon in theΛc+pKπ+decay mode. The known pentaquark states are also investigated, and their signal yields are found to be consistent with zero in all cases.

    A search for the fully reconstructed$$ {B}_s^0 $$Bs0→ μ+μγdecay is performed at the LHCb experiment using proton-proton collisions at$$ \sqrt{s} $$s= 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb1.     at 95% confidence level. Additionally, upper limits are set on the branching fraction in the [2mμ,1.70] GeV/c2dimuon mass region excluding the contribution from the intermediateϕ(1020) meson, and in the region combining all dimuon-mass intervals.

  5. The LHCb upgrade represents a major change of the experiment. The detectors have been almost completely renewed to allow running at an instantaneous luminosity five times larger than that of the previous running periods. Readout of all detectors into an all-software trigger is central to the new design, facilitating the reconstruction of events at the maximum LHC interaction rate, and their selection in real time. The experiment's tracking system has been completely upgraded with a new pixel vertex detector, a silicon tracker upstream of the dipole magnet and three scintillating fibre tracking stations downstream of the magnet. The whole photon detection system of the RICH detectors has been renewed and the readout electronics of the calorimeter and muon systems have been fully overhauled. The first stage of the all-software trigger is implemented on a GPU farm. The output of the trigger provides a combination of totally reconstructed physics objects, such as tracks and vertices, ready for final analysis, and of entire events which need further offline reprocessing. This scheme required a complete revision of the computing model and rewriting of the experiment's software.

  6. The production of 𝜂 and 𝜂′ mesons is studied in proton-proton and proton-lead collisions collected with the LHCb detector. Proton-proton collisions are studied at center-of-mass energies of 5.02 and 13TeV and proton-lead collisions are studied at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon of 8.16TeV. The studies are performed in center-of-mass (c.m.) rapidity regions 2.5<𝑦c.m.<3.5 (forward rapidity) and −4.0<𝑦c.m.<−3.0 (backward rapidity) defined relative to the proton beam direction. The 𝜂 and 𝜂′ production cross sections are measured differentially as a function of transverse momentum for 1.5<𝑝T<10GeV and 3<𝑝T<10GeV, respectively. The differential cross sections are used to calculate nuclear modification factors. The nuclear modification factors for 𝜂 and 𝜂′ mesons agree at both forward and backward rapidity, showing no significant evidence of mass dependence. The differential cross sections of 𝜂 mesons are also used to calculate 𝜂/𝜋0 cross-section ratios, which show evidence of a deviation from the world average. These studies offer new constraints on mass-dependent nuclear effects in heavy-ion collisions, as well as 𝜂 and 𝜂′ meson fragmentation.

  7. Abstract

    Steam‐cracker tar (SCT) is a by‐product of ethylene production that is in massive quantities globally (>150 × 106tons per year). With few useful applications, the production of unwanted SCT leads to the need for its costly disposal or burning at the boiler plant. The discovery of new uses for SCT would therefore bring both economic and environmental benefits, although, to date, efforts toward employing SCT in diverse applications have been limited, and progress is further hampered by a lack of understanding of the material itself. Although complex and highly heterogeneous in nature, the molecular composition of SCT has the potential to serve as a diverse and tunable feedstock for wide‐ranging applications. Here, a simple solution‐processing method for SCT that allows its conductivity and optical properties to be controlled over orders of magnitude is reported. Here, by way of example, the focus is on the production of transparent conductive thin films, which exhibit a wide range of transparencies (23–93%) and sheet resistances (2.5 Ω □–1to 1.2 kΩ □–1) that are tuned by a combination of solution concentration and thermal annealing. As transparent Joule heaters, even without optimization, these SCT devices show competitive performance compared to established technologies such as those based on reduced graphene oxide, and surpass the temperature stability limit of other materials. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that laser annealing can be used to process the SCT films and directly pattern transparent heaters on an arbitrary substrate. These results highlight the potential of SCT as a feedstock material for electronic applications and suggest that broader classes of either naturally occurring carbon or produced carbonaceous by‐products could prove useful in a range of applications.
