  1. The flux of cosmic ray muons at the Earth’s surface exhibits seasonal variations due to changes in the temperature of the atmosphere affecting the production and decay of mesons in the upper atmosphere. Using 1473 live days of data collected by the NuMI Off-axis νe Appearance (NOvA) Near Detector during 2018–2022, we studied the seasonal pattern in the multiple-muon event rate. The data confirm an anticorrelation between the multiple-muon event rate and effective atmospheric temperature, consistent across all the years of data. Previous analyses from MINOS and NOvA saw a similar anticorrelation but did not include an explanation. We find that this anticorrelation is driven by altitude–geometry effects as the average muon production height changes with the season. This has been studied with a CORSIKA cosmic ray simulation package by varying atmospheric parameters, and provides an explanation to a longstanding discrepancy between the seasonal phases of single and multiple-muon events.

  2. This Letter reports measurements of muon-neutrino disappearance and electron-neutrino appearance and the corresponding antineutrino processes between the two NOvA detectors in the NuMI neutrino beam. These measurements use a dataset with double the neutrino mode beam exposure that was previously analyzed, along with improved simulation and analysis techniques. A joint fit to these samples in the three-flavor paradigm results in the most precise single-experiment constraint on the atmospheric neutrino mass splitting, Δ m322 =2.43 10.034+0.036 (2.47 90.036+0.036 )×103eV2 if the mass ordering is normal (inverted). In both orderings, a region close to maximal mixing with sin2 θ23 =0.5 50.06+0.02 is preferred. The NOvA data show a mild preference for the normal mass ordering with a Bayes factor of 2.4 (corresponding to 70% of the posterior probability), indicating that the normal ordering is 2.4 times more probable than the inverted ordering. When incorporating a 2D Δ m322 sin22 θ13 constraint based on Daya Bay data, this preference strengthens to a Bayes factor of 6.6 (87%).

  3. Abstract A search for Higgs boson (H) production at high transverse momentum (pT) in the WW decay channel is presented. The analysis uses proton-proton collisions at$$ \sqrt{s}=13 $$ s=13 TeV recorded by the CMS experiment in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. The visible decay products of the Higgs boson are reconstructed as a single large-radius jet with one isolated lepton or none (1ℓand 0ℓ, respectively;ℓ= e,μ). The H-candidate jets are identified using an advanced transformer-based algorithm and are calibrated with the Lund jet plane reweighting technique. The 1ℓchannel is further split into gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and associated production with hadronically decaying vector boson categories, while the 0ℓchannel considers all production processes inclusively. The measured cross section times the H→WW branching fraction relative to the standard model expectation is$$ \mu =-{0.19}_{-0.46}^{+0.48} $$ μ= 0.190.46+0.48 , indicating no evidence of a signal above the background. This measurement represents the first dedicated study of highly Lorentz-boosted H→WW decays, complementing earlier searches for high-pTHiggs boson in other decay channels.

  4. We present the measurement of π+ -argon inelastic cross sections using the ProtoDUNE single-phase liquid argon time projection chamber in the incident π+ kinetic energy range of 500–800 MeV in multiple exclusive channels (absorption, charge exchange, and the remaining inelastic interactions). The results of this analysis are important inputs to simulations of liquid argon neutrino experiments such as the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment and the Short Baseline Neutrino program at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. They will be employed to improve the modeling of final state interactions within neutrino event generators used by these experiments, as well as the modeling of π+ -argon secondary interactions within the liquid argon. This is the first measurement of π+ -argon absorption at this kinetic energy range as well as the first ever measurement of π+ -argon charge exchange.

  5. A search for the pair production of heavy spin- 1/2 or spin- 3/2 resonances ( t* ) in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV is presented. Data collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC from 2016 to 2018 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb1 are used. The analysis targets benchmark signal scenarios where one t* decays into a top quark ( t ) and a photon ( γ ), and the other into a t quark and a gluon ( g ), i.e., ppt* t*¯ ttγg . All-hadronic final states from the t pair decay chain are selected using jet substructure techniques. The signal is probed as a function of the t* candidate mass, which is reconstructed using the photon and a top quark candidate jet. No significant deviation from the background-only hypothesis is found. Observed (expected) upper limits on the signal cross section at 95% confidence level are set, excluding masses of spin- 1/2 t* particles below 930 (930) GeV and spin- 3/2 t* particles below 1330 (1390) GeV. This analysis marks the first search for heavy resonances in the t t¯ γg channel. Exploiting the high-energy photon to reduce the backgrounds, this search achieves sensitivity competitive with ppt* t*¯ t t¯ gg searches for spin- 1/2 t* despite the small expected t*tγ branching fraction.

  6. Abstract A measurement of the angular structure of inclusive jets and those containing a prompt D0meson in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV is presented. The data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 301 pb−1were collected by the CMS experiment in 2017. Two jet grooming algorithms, late-kTand soft drop, are used to study the intrajet radiation pattern using iterative Cambridge-Aachen declustering. The splitting-angle distributions of jets with transverse momentum (pT) of around 100 GeV, obtained with these two algorithms, show that there is a shift of the distribution for jets containing a prompt D0meson with respect to inclusive jets. The suppression of emissions at small angles observed in the late-kTgrooming approach is consistent with the dead-cone effect, whereas the similar suppression for splittings selected with the soft-drop algorithm appears to be induced by gluon splitting to charm quark-antiquark pairs at large angles. The measured distributions are corrected to the particle level and can be used to constrain model predictions for the substructure of high-pTcharm quark jets.

  7. Abstract The measurement of three-dimensional femtoscopic correlations between identical charged kaons (K±K±) produced in p–Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair$$\sqrt{{s}_{\text{NN}}}=5.02$$TeV with ALICE at the LHC is presented for the first time. This measurement, supplementary to those in pp and Pb–Pb collisions, allows understanding the particle-production mechanisms at different charged-particle multiplicities and provides information on the dynamics of the source of particles created in p–Pb collisions, for which a general consensus does not yet exist. It is shown that the measured source sizes increase with charged-particle multiplicity and decrease with increasing pair transverse momentum. These trends for K±K±are similar to the ones observed earlier in identical charged-pion and$${\text{K}}_{\text{s}}^{0}{\text{K}}_{\text{s}}^{0}$$correlations in Pb–Pb collisions at various energies and inπ±π±correlations in p–Pb collisions at$$\sqrt{{s}_{\text{NN}}}=5.02$$TeV. At comparable multiplicity, the source sizes measured in p–Pb collisions agree within uncertainties with those observed in pp collisions, and there is an indication that they are smaller than those observed in Pb–Pb collisions. The obtained results are also compared with predictions from the hadronic interaction model EPOS 3, which tends to underestimate the source size for the most central collisions and agrees with the data for semicentral and peripheral events. Furthermore, the time of maximal emission for kaons is extracted. It turns out to be comparable with the value obtained in highly peripheral Pb–Pb collisions at the same energy, indicating that the kaon emission evolution is similar to that in p–Pb collisions.

  8. This paper presents the first measurement of the angle between different jet axes (denoted as ΔRaxis ) in Pb-Pb collisions. The measurement is carried out in the 0–10 % most-central events at sNN =5.02 TeV. Jets are assembled by clustering charged particles at midrapidity using the anti-kT algorithm with resolution parameters R=0.2 and 0.4 and transverse momenta in the intervals 40< pT chjet <140GeV/c and 80< pT chjet <140GeV/c , respectively. Measurements at these low transverse momenta enhance the sensitivity to quark-gluon plasma (QGP) effects. A comparison to models implementing various mechanisms of jet energy loss in the QGP suggests that the observed narrowing of the Pb-Pb distribution relative to pp can be explained if quark-initiated jets are more likely to emerge from the medium than gluon-initiated jets. These new measurements disfavor intrajet pT broadening as implemented in a simple model calculation with the Baier-Dokshitzer-Mueller-Peigne-Schiff formalism for energy loss in the QGP. The comparison of Pb-Pb and pp collisions shows sensitivity to the angular scale at which the QGP can resolve two independent splittings, favoring mechanisms that incorporate incoherent energy loss.

  9. Double- and single-differential cross sections for inclusive charged-current νμ -nucleus scattering are reported for the kinematic domain 0 to 2GeV/c in three-momentum transfer and 0 to 2 GeV in available energy, at a mean νμ energy of 1.86 GeV. The measurements are based on an estimated 995,760 νμ charged-current (CC) interactions in the scintillator medium of the NOvA Near Detector. The subdomain populated by 2-particle-2-hole (2p2h) reactions is identified by the cross section excess relative to predictions for νμ -nucleus scattering that are constrained by a data control sample. Models for 2-particle-2-hole processes are rated by χ2 comparisons of the predicted-versus-measured νμ CC inclusive cross section over the full phase space and in the restricted subdomain. Shortfalls are observed in neutrino generator predictions obtained using the theory-based València and SuSAv2 2p2h models. Published by the American Physical Society2025
