  1. Australia has long been recognized as one of the world’s fire hotspots, but the Black Summer of 2019-2020, when 97,000 km2 were scorched across southeastern Australia, and the larger fires of northern Australia’s savanna and desert in 2023, may indicate a shift toward a higher level of fire activity. Placing these events in context requires developing precisely-dated, high resolution records of bushfire through periods with different climate and land use mean states. We reconstructed bushfire activity for the period 1110-2009 CE using polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in three precisely-dated, fast-growing, and partially overlapping aragonite stalagmites from cave KNI-51, located in the central Australian tropical savanna. PAH molecular weights are tied to combustion temperature (i.e., low molecular weights form in lower temperature fires), and thus our record preserves evidence of both the timing and intensity of bushfire over the majority of the last millennium. Comparisons of burn scar satellite imagery with temporal changes in PAH abundances in recently deposited stalagmite suggest that airfall (smoke and ash) from fires within a 5 km radius is primarily responsible for transmitting PAHs to the land surface over the cave, a finding supported by our recent controlled burn and irrigation experiment. The rapid growth rate of KNI-51 stalagmites (1-2 mm yr-1), coupled with the extremely thin soils above the cave, appear to allow for transmission and preservation of multi-annual paleofire signals. To investigate the effects of external forcing on bushfire activity over the last millennium, we applied linear mixed-effect regression to the PAH data, and also included monsoon rainfall (using oxygen isotope ratios from the same stalagmites), annual surface air temperature (using output from the CESM-Last Millennium Ensemble), antecedent fire (using the same stalagmite PAH record), and timing with respect to the arrival of European pastoralists (EP) and their cattle in the 1880s. The model reveals significant differences prior to and following the arrival of EP. Most notably, prior to the arrival of EP, rainfall was significantly correlated with low and medium intensity fires, but not high intensity ones. After the arrival of EP, the correlation between rainfall and fire activity decreased markedly, and showed no statistically significant correlation to any fire intensity. Similarly, prior to the arrival of EP, antecedent fire activity (determined as the sum of PAH within the previous 5 years) was correlated with all levels of fire intensity, but after EP arrival, only high intensity fires are correlated with such antecedent burning. Our findings thus suggest that fire activity following the arrival of EP in the eastern Kimberley has been distinct from any other extended period of the last nine centuries.

  2. Pyrogenic compounds, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), can track the type and intensity of fires and are preserved in many environmental matrices including speleothems. We recently reported on a stalagmite record of PAH abundance distributions from cave KNI-51, located among the eucalypt savanna in the Ningbing range of tropical Western Australia. In order to better understand the manner by which PAHs from local bushfires are deposited on the land surface and transported into caves, we performed a controlled burn and irrigation experiment at cave KNI-140, located near to and in the same bedrock as cave KNI-51. Samples of soil, vegetation, ash, and air were collected prior to and immediately succeeding the prescribed burn. The fire, which burned predominantly grasses, was ignited by matches (no accelerants were used) and covered approximately 30,000 square meters upwind from the cave. The land surface above the cave was irrigated prior to and immediately succeeding the burn with resulting dripwater collected for analysis. Next, ash samples were deposited directly above the cave and then similarly irrigated, with the drip water also collected. The PAHs present in these samples were measured via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry at Ca’ Foscari University, Venice. Our results reveal that low molecular weight PAHs were the most abundant species of PAH in the drip water and heavier PAHs were substantially less abundant. This result is likely due to the low combustion temperature of the burn, with abundances increasing through each of the three stages of sample collection, demonstrating that deposition from smoke and cinders produces identifiable signals in dripwater (and thus stalagmite) PAHs, supporting the contention that KNI-51 stalagmites record fire activity occurring not just above the cave but within km of the cave. On-going analyses of soil, vegetation, and ash samples will further clarify the role of fire on production and transmission of PAHs at this site, and thus how these organic compounds preserved in speleothems can help delineate the fire history in the region.

    Daylength sensing in many plants is critical for coordinating the timing of flowering with the appropriate season. Temperate climate-adapted grasses such as Brachypodium distachyon flower during the spring when days are becoming longer. The photoreceptor PHYTOCHROME C is essential for long-day (LD) flowering in B. distachyon. PHYC is required for the LD activation of a suite of genes in the photoperiod pathway including PHOTOPERIOD1 (PPD1) that, in turn, result in the activation of FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT1)/FLORIGEN, which causes flowering. Thus, B. distachyon phyC mutants are extremely delayed in flowering. Here we show that PHYC-mediated activation of PPD1 occurs via EARLY FLOWERING 3 (ELF3), a component of the evening complex in the circadian clock. The extreme delay of flowering of the phyC mutant disappears when combined with an elf3 loss-of-function mutation. Moreover, the dampened PPD1 expression in phyC mutant plants is elevated in phyC/elf3 mutant plants consistent with the rapid flowering of the double mutant. We show that loss of PPD1 function also results in reduced FT1 expression and extremely delayed flowering consistent with results from wheat and barley. Additionally, elf3 mutant plants have elevated expression levels of PPD1, and we show that overexpression of ELF3 results in delayed flowering associated with a reduction of PPD1 and FT1 expression, indicating that ELF3 represses PPD1 transcription consistent with previous studies showing that ELF3 binds to the PPD1 promoter. Indeed, PPD1 is the main target of ELF3-mediated flowering as elf3/ppd1 double mutant plants are delayed flowering. Our results indicate that ELF3 operates downstream from PHYC and acts as a repressor of PPD1 in the photoperiod flowering pathway of B. distachyon.

  4. Since the 1980s, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) has transformed from an agency predominantly focused on timber production to one focused on recreation and ecosystem management. This shift is particularly remarkable because it occurred without major substantive national forest policy changes. During this period, many national forests changed their forest planning processes in ways that provided greater opportunity for public input into forest plans, and in 2012 the USFS issued new planning rules that institutionalized these practices. In this study, we ask: how has the planning process changed over time, and how have these changes shaped forest plan outcomes? To answer these questions, we conduct a comparative case study of two national forests—the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and the Inyo National Forest—that produced forest plans in the 1980s and again in the 2010s. We use the Network of Action Situations (NAS) approach to compare planning processes over time and across forests. We find that in addition to the changes mandated by the 2012 rules, both forests developed a series of forums to engage the public in plan development and review, and that increased stakeholder engagement has helped shape forest priorities. These findings suggest that greater involvement by regional stakeholders could pressure the USFS to adopt more regional approaches for addressing challenges like climate change and wildfire risk.

Contrasting the equal contribution of nuclear genetic material from maternal and paternal sources to offspring, passage of mitochondria, and thus mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), is uniparental through the egg. Since mitochondria in eggs are ancestral to all somatic mitochondria of the next generation and to all cells of future generations, oocytes must prepare for the high energetic demands of maturation, fertilization and embryogenesis while simultaneously ensuring that their mitochondrial genomes are inherited in an undamaged state. Although significant effort has been made to understand how the mtDNA bottleneck and purifying selection act coordinately to prevent silent and unchecked spreading of invisible mtDNA mutations through the female germ line across successive generations, it is unknown if and how somatic cells of the immediate next generation are spared from inheritance of detrimental mtDNA molecules. Here, we review unique aspects of mitochondrial activity and segregation in eggs and early embryos, and how these events play into embryonic developmental competency in the face of advancing maternal age.

  6. Abstract Prior research suggests that climate stories are rarely reported by local news outlets in the United States. As part of the Climate Matters in the Newsroom project—a program for climate-reporting resources designed to help journalists report local climate stories—we conducted a series of local climate-reporting workshops for journalists to support such reporting. Here, we present the impacts of eight workshops conducted in 2018 and 2019—including participant assessments of the workshop, longitudinal changes in their climate-reporting self-efficacy, and the number and proportion of print and digital climate stories reported. We learned that participants found value in the workshops and experienced significant increases in their climate-reporting self-efficacy in response to the workshops, which were largely sustained over the next 6 months. We found only limited evidence that participants reported more frequently on climate change after the workshops—possibly, in part, due to the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on the news industry. These findings suggest that local climate-reporting workshops can be a useful but not necessarily sufficient strategy for supporting local climate change reporting. Further research is needed to illuminate how to support local climate reporting most effectively. Significance StatementAs part of an NSF-funded project to support local climate change news reporting, we conducted a series of eight journalist workshops. Here we evaluate their impacts. Participants gave the workshops strong positive ratings and experienced significant increases in climate-reporting self-efficacy. There was only limited evidence, however, that the workshops led to more frequent reporting on climate change—a conclusion muddied by the impacts of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on the news industry. These findings suggest that local climate-reporting workshops may be a useful strategy but that additional research is needed to strengthen the approach.
