  1. There is growing concern about sensory pollutants affecting ecological communities. Anthropogenically enhanced oxidants [ozone (O3) and nitrate radicals (NO3)] rapidly degrade floral scents, potentially reducing pollinator attraction to flowers. However, the physiological and behavioral impacts on pollinators and plant fitness are unknown. Using a nocturnal flower-moth system, we found that atmospherically relevant concentrations of NO3eliminate flower visitation by moths, and the reaction of NO3with a subset of monoterpenes is what reduces the scent’s attractiveness. Global atmospheric models of floral scent oxidation reveal that pollinators in certain urban areas may have a reduced ability to perceive and navigate to flowers. These results illustrate the impact of anthropogenic pollutants on an animal’s olfactory ability and indicate that such pollutants may be critical regulators of global pollination.

The ALICE Collaboration reports measurements of the semi-inclusive distribution of charged-particle jets recoiling from a high transverse momentum (highpT) charged hadron, inppand central Pb-Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon collisionsNN=5.02TeV. The large uncorrelated background in central Pb-Pb collisions is corrected using a data-driven statistical approach which enables precise measurement of recoil jet distributions over a broad range inpT,chjetand jet resolution parameterR. Recoil jet yields are reported forR=0.2, 0.4, and 0.5 in the range7<pT,chjet<140 GeV/candπ/2<Δφ<π, whereΔφis the azimuthal angular separation between hadron trigger and recoil jet. The low-pT,chjetreach of the measurement explores unique phase space for studying jet quenching, the interaction of jets with the quark–gluon plasma generated in high-energy nuclear collisions. Comparison ofpT,chjetdistributions fromppand central Pb-Pb collisions probes medium-induced jet energy loss and intra-jet broadening, while comparison of their acoplanarity distributions explores in-medium jet scattering and medium response. The measurements are compared to theoretical calculations incorporating jet quenching.

The measurements exhibit a marked medium-induced jet yield enhancement at low<math display='inline'><msub><mi>p</mi><mi mathvariant='normal'>T</mi></msub></math>and at large azimuthal deviation from<math display='inline'><mrow><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>Δ</mi><mi>φ</mi></mrow><mo>∼</mo><mi>π</mi></mrow></math>. The enhancement is characterized by its dependence on<math display='inline'><mi mathvariant='normal'>Δ</mi><mi>φ</mi></math>, which has a slope that differs from zero by<math display='inline'><mrow><mn>4.7</mn><mi>σ</mi></mrow></math>. Comparisons to model calculations incorporating different formulations of jet quenching are reported. The analysis strategy is optimized to probe anomalous values of the Higgs boson self-coupling modifier<math display='inline'><msub><mi>κ</mi><mi>λ</mi></msub></math>and of the quartic<math display='inline'><mi>H</mi><mi>H</mi><mi>V</mi><mi>V</mi></math>(<math display='inline'><mrow><mrow><mi>V</mi><mo>=</mo><mi>W</mi></mrow><mo>,</mo><mrow><mi>Z</mi></mrow></mrow></math>) coupling modifier<math display='inline'><msub><mi>κ</mi><mrow><mn>2</mn><mi>V</mi></mrow></msub></math>. No significant excess above the expected background from Standard Model processes is observed. An observed (expected) upper limit<math display='inline'><msub><mi>μ</mi><mrow><mi>H</mi><mi>H</mi></mrow></msub><mo><</mo><mn>5.9</mn><mo stretchy='false'>(</mo><mn>3.3</mn><mo stretchy='false'>)</mo></math>is set at 95% confidence-level on the Higgs boson pair production cross section normalized to its Standard Model prediction. The coupling modifiers are constrained to an observed (expected) 95% confidence interval of<math display='inline'><mo>−</mo><mn>3.1</mn><mo><</mo><msub><mi>κ</mi><mi>λ</mi></msub><mo><</mo><mn>9.0</mn></math>(<math display='inline'><mo>−</mo><mn>2.5</mn><mo><</mo><msub><mi>κ</mi><mi>λ</mi></msub><mo><</mo><mn>9.3</mn></math>) and<math display='inline'><mo>−</mo><mn>0.5</mn><mo><</mo><msub><mi>κ</mi><mrow><mn>2</mn><mi>V</mi></mrow></msub><mo><</mo><mn>2.7</mn></math>(<math display='inline'><mo>−</mo><mn>0.2</mn><mo><</mo><msub><mi>κ</mi><mrow><mn>2</mn><mi>V</mi></mrow></msub><mo><</mo><mn>2.4</mn></math>), assuming all other Higgs boson couplings are fixed to the Standard Model prediction.
