  2. Research shows formative assessments substantially strengthen learning and support summative assessment/evaluation practices. These practices are not widely applied in ATE's professional development (PD) efforts. This study focuses on participant teachers' assessment involvement to increase student learning and enhance outcome evaluations. We surveyed all principal investigators of ATE projects in 2022 who applied assessments in their 2021 PD efforts (N=70). Findings show that a minority of PD efforts apply formative assessment practices to strengthen PD outcomes or meet ATE's evaluation specifications. Assessment practices were most prevalent for summative purposes at the close of PD activity; a large majority assessed teachers' interest and learning in the PD and their intentions to use and teach what was learned on return to their classrooms. A third or less followed up to assess outcomes in teachers' schools. Similarly, thirty percent or less addressed matters of context at any stage of the PD efforts, and a few, 11 percent, followed up to assess the context in the schools. Concomitantly, the findings show where and how attention to formative assessment in the PD learning process can increase teacher involvement in assessment practices, making PD instruction more effective and strengthening outcome evaluations in participant teachers' home classrooms.

  5. Abstract

Element isotopes are characterized by distinct atomic masses and nuclear spins, which can significantly influence material properties. Notably, however, isotopes in natural materials are homogenously distributed in space. Here, we propose a method to configure material properties by repositioning isotopes in engineered van der Waals (vdW) isotopic heterostructures. We showcase the properties of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) isotopic heterostructures in engineering confined photon-lattice waves—hyperbolic phonon polaritons. By varying the composition, stacking order, and thicknesses of h10BN and h11BN building blocks, hyperbolic phonon polaritons can be engineered into a variety of energy-momentum dispersions. These confined and tailored polaritons are promising for various nanophotonic and thermal functionalities. Due to the universality and importance of isotopes, our vdW isotope heterostructuring method can be applied to engineer the properties of a broad range of materials.

  6. ABSTRACT

Studies of dense core morphologies and their orientations with respect to gas flows and the local magnetic field have been limited to only a small sample of cores with spectroscopic data. Leveraging the Green Bank Ammonia Survey alongside existing sub-millimeter continuum observations and Planck dust polarization, we produce a cross-matched catalogue of 399 dense cores with estimates of core morphology, size, mass, specific angular momentum, and magnetic field orientation. Of the 399 cores, 329 exhibit 2D vLSR maps that are well fit with a linear gradient, consistent with rotation projected on the sky. We find a best-fit specific angular momentum and core size relationship of J/M ∝ R1.82 ± 0.10, suggesting that core velocity gradients originate from a combination of solid body rotation and turbulent motions. Most cores have no preferred orientation between the axis of core elongation, velocity gradient direction, and the ambient magnetic field orientation, favouring a triaxial and weakly magnetized origin. We find, however, strong evidence for a preferred anti-alignment between the core elongation axis and magnetic field for protostellar cores, revealing a change in orientation from starless and prestellar populations that may result from gravitational contraction in a magnetically-regulated (but not dominant) environment. We also find marginal evidence for anti-alignment between the core velocity gradient and magnetic field orientation in the L1228 and L1251 regions of Cepheus, suggesting a preferred orientation with respect to magnetic fields may be more prevalent in regions with locally ordered fields.

  7. Emerging wearable devices are very attractive and promising in biomedical and healthcare fields because of their biocompatibility for monitoring in situ biomarker-associated signals and external stimulus. Many such devices or systems demand microscale sensors fabricated on curved and flexible hydrogel substrates. However, fabrication of microstructures on such substrates is still challenging because the traditional planar lithography process is not compatible with curved, flexible, and hydrated substrates. Here, we present a shadow-mask-assisted deposition process capable of directly generating metallic microstructures on the curved hydrogel substrate, specifically the contact lens, one of the most popular hydrogel substrates for wearable biomedical applications. In this process, the curved hydrogel substrate is temporarily flattened on a planar surface and metal features are deposited on this substrate through a shadow mask. To achieve a high patterning fidelity, we have experimentally and theoretically investigated various types of distortion due to wrinkles on 3D-printed sample holders, geometric distortion of the substrate due to the flattening process, and volume change of the hydrogel material during the dehydration and hydration processes of the contact lens. Using this method, we have demonstrated fabrication of various titanium pattern arrays on contact lenses with high fidelity and yield.
