  1. We develop a framework to understand the mechanics of metamaterial sheets on curved surfaces. Here we have constructed a continuum elastic theory of mechanical metamaterials by introducing an auxiliary, scalar gauge-like field that absorbs the strain along the soft mode and projects out the stiff ones. We propose a general form of the elastic energy of a mechanism based metamaterial sheet and specialize to the cases of dilational metamaterials and shear metamaterials conforming to positively and negatively curved substrates in the Föppl–Von Kármán limit of small strains. We perform numerical simulations of these systems and obtain good agreement with our analytical predictions. This work provides a framework that can be easily extended to explore non-linear soft modes in metamaterial elasticity in future.

  3. Abstract Background

    An updated version of the mwtab Python package for programmatic access to the Metabolomics Workbench (MetabolomicsWB) data repository was released at the beginning of 2021. Along with updating the package to match the changes to MetabolomicsWB’s ‘mwTab’ file format specification and enhancing the package’s functionality, the included validation facilities were used to detect and catalog file inconsistencies and errors across all publicly available datasets in MetabolomicsWB.

    Results

    The MetabolomicsWB File Status website was developed to provide continuous validation of MetabolomicsWB data files and a useful interface to all found inconsistencies and errors. This list of detectable issues/errors include format parsing errors, format compliance issues, access problems via MetabolomicsWB’s REST interface, and other small inconsistencies that can hinder reusability. The website uses the mwtab Python package to pull down and validate each available analysis file and then generates an html report. The website is updated on a weekly basis. Moreover, the Python website design utilizes GitHub and GitHub.io, providing an easy to replicate template for implementing other metadata, virtual, and meta- repositories.

    Conclusions

    The MetabolomicsWB File Status website provides a metadata repository of validation metadata to promote the FAIR use of existing metabolomics datasets from the MetabolomicsWB data repository.

  4. Abstract

    Organized deep convective activity has been routinely monitored by satellite precipitation radar from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and Global Precipitation Mission (GPM). Organized deep convective activity is found to increase not only with sea surface temperature (SST) above 27°C, but also with low-level wind shear. Precipitation shows a similar increasing relationship with both SST and low-level wind shear, except for the highest low-level wind shear. These observations suggest that the threshold for organized deep convection and precipitation in the tropics should consider not only SST, but also vertical wind shear. The longwave cloud radiative feedback, measured as the tropospheric longwave cloud radiative heating per amount of precipitation, is found to generally increase with stronger organized deep convective activity as SST and low-level wind shear increase. Organized deep convective activity, the longwave cloud radiative feedback, and cirrus ice cloud cover per amount of precipitation also appear to be controlled more strongly by SST than by the deviation of SST from its tropical mean. This study hints at the importance of non-thermodynamic factors such as vertical wind shear for impacting tropical convective structure, cloud properties, and associated radiative energy budget of the tropics.

    Significance Statement

    This study uses tropical satellite observations to demonstrate that vertical wind shear affects the relationship between sea surface temperature and tropical organized deep convection and precipitation. Shear also affects associated cloud properties and how clouds affect the flow of radiation in the atmosphere. Although how vertical wind shear affects convective organization has long been studied in the mesoscale community, the study attempts to apply mesoscale theory to explain the large-scale mean organization of tropical deep convection, cloud properties, and radiative feedbacks. The study also provides a quantitative observational baseline of how vertical wind shear modifies cloud radiative effects and convective organization, which can be compared to numerical simulations.

  5. Abstract

    Throughout the history of Icelandic, invariant particles, which do not inflect for semantic or syntactic features of the antecedent, are the typical markers of relative clauses (Þráinsson 2007). Another, putatively foreign strategy—relativization with interrogative–relative pronouns—is archaic in Modern Icelandic, but is frequent between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, a period featuring a high degree of literary translation from languages which themselves possessed interrogative–relativization strategies. In this paper, I examine both internal processes of grammaticalization and the effects of contact on the development of this strategy from Old‐to‐Early Modern Icelandic by comparing the translation of the morphosyntatic structures of relative clauses among the languages involved in this contact scenario: Icelandic, German, and Latin. Using the Icelandic Parsed Historical Corpus (Wallenberg et al. 2011), I conduct a diachronic corpus study that quantifies the development of this relativization strategy. I argue that the proliferation of the Icelandic interrogative–relativization strategy is a contact phenomenon stimulated by pattern borrowing from (primarily) Latin, but contextualized and made possible by a state of systemic variability and instability in the relative paradigm in Early Modern Icelandic.

  6. Abstract

    We present a draft Minimum Information About Geospatial Information System (MIAGIS) standard for facilitating public deposition of geospatial information system (GIS) datasets that follows the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) principles. The draft MIAGIS standard includes a deposition directory structure and a minimum javascript object notation (JSON) metadata formatted file that is designed to capture critical metadata describing GIS layers and maps as well as their sources of data and methods of generation. The associated miagis Python package facilitates the creation of this MIAGIS metadata file and directly supports metadata extraction from both Esri JSON and GEOJSON GIS data formats plus options for extraction from user-specified JSON formats. We also demonstrate their use in crafting two example depositions of ArcGIS generated maps. We hope this draft MIAGIS standard along with the supporting miagis Python package will assist in establishing a GIS standards group that will develop the draft into a full standard for the wider GIS community as well as a future public repository for GIS datasets.

  7. Abstract

    Exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water is widely recognized as a public health concern. Decision-makers who are responsible for managing PFAS drinking water risks lack the tools to acquire the information they need. In response to this need, we provide a detailed description of a Kentucky dataset that allows decision-makers to visualize potential hot-spot areas and evaluate drinking water systems that may be susceptible to PFAS contamination. The dataset includes information extracted from publicly available sources to create five different maps in ArcGIS Online and highlights potential sources of PFAS contamination in the environment in relation to drinking water systems. As datasets of PFAS drinking water sampling continue to grow as part of evolving regulatory requirements, we used this Kentucky dataset as an example to promote the reuse of this dataset and others like it. We incorporated the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) principles by creating a Figshare item that includes all data and associated metadata with these five ArcGIS maps.

  8. Abstract

    We present the first quiet Sun spectropolarimetric observations obtained with the Visible SpectroPolarimeter at the 4 m Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope. We recorded observations in a wavelength range that includes the magnetically sensitive Fei6301.5/6302.5 Å doublet. With an estimated spatial resolution of 0.″08, this represents the highest spatial resolution full-vector spectropolarimetric observations ever obtained of the quiet Sun. We identified 53 small-scale magnetic elements, including 47 magnetic loops and four unipolar magnetic patches, with linear and circular polarization detected in all of them. Of particular interest is a magnetic element in which the polarity of the magnetic vector appears to change three times in only 400 km and which has linear polarization signals throughout. We find complex StokesVprofiles at the polarity inversion lines of magnetic loops and discover degenerate solutions, as we are unable to conclusively determine whether these arise due to gradients in the atmospheric parameters or smearing of opposite-polarity signals. We analyze a granule that notably has linear and circular polarization signals throughout, providing an opportunity to explore its magnetic properties. On this small scale, we see the magnetic field strength range from 25 G at the granular boundary to 2 kG in the intergranular lane (IGL) and sanity-check the values with the weak and strong field approximations. A value of 2 kG in the IGL is among the highest measurements ever recorded for the internetwork.

    In recent years, United States federal funding agencies, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF), have implemented public access policies to make research supported by funding from these federal agencies freely available to the public. Enforcement is primarily through annual and final reports submitted to these funding agencies, where all peer-reviewed publications must be registered through the appropriate mechanism as required by the specific federal funding agency. Unreported and/or incorrectly reported papers can result in delayed acceptance of annual and final reports and even funding delays for current and new research grants. So, it’s important to make sure every peer-reviewed publication is reported properly and in a timely manner. For large collaborative research efforts, the tracking and proper registration of peer-reviewed publications along with generation of accurate annual and final reports can create a large administrative burden. With large collaborative teams, it is easy for these administrative tasks to be overlooked, forgotten, or lost in the shuffle. In order to help with this reporting burden, we have developed the Academic Tracker software package, implemented in the Python 3 programming language and supporting Linux, Windows, and Mac operating systems. Academic Tracker helps with publication tracking and reporting by comprehensively searching major peer-reviewed publication tracking web portals, including PubMed, Crossref, ORCID, and Google Scholar, given a list of authors. Academic Tracker provides highly customizable reporting templates so information about the resulting publications is easily transformed into appropriate formats for tracking and reporting purposes.
