  1. Abstract

A generic search is presented for the associated production of a Z boson or a photon with an additional unspecified massive particle X,$${\textrm{pp}}\rightarrow {\textrm{pp}} +{{\textrm{Z}}}/\upgamma +{{\textrm{X}}} $$pppp+Z/γ+X, in proton-tagged events from proton–proton collisions at$$\sqrt{s}=13\, \textrm{TeV}$$s=13TeV, recorded in 2017 with the CMS detector and the CMS-TOTEM precision proton spectrometer. The missing mass spectrum is analysed in the 600–1600 GeV range and a fit is performed to search for possible deviations from the background expectation. No significant excess in data with respect to the background predictions has been observed. Model-independent upper limits on the visible production cross section of$${\textrm{pp}}\rightarrow {\textrm{pp}} +{{\textrm{Z}}}/\upgamma +{{\textrm{X}}} $$pppp+Z/γ+Xare set.

  2. Abstract Multijet events at large transverse momentum ( $$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ p T ) are measured at $$\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {TeV} $$ s = 13 TeV using data recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $$36.3{\,\text {fb}^{-1}} $$ 36.3 fb - 1 . The multiplicity of jets with $$p_{\textrm{T}} >50\,\text {GeV} $$ p T > 50 GeV that are produced in association with a high- $$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ p T dijet system is measured in various ranges of the $$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ p T of the jet with the highest transverse momentum and as a function of the azimuthal angle difference $$\varDelta \phi _{1,2}$$ Δ ϕ 1 , 2 between the two highest $$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ p T jets in the dijet system. The differential production cross sections are measured as a function of the transverse momenta of the four highest $$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ p T jets. The measurements are compared with leading and next-to-leading order matrix element calculations supplemented with simulations of parton shower, hadronization, and multiparton interactions. In addition, the measurements are compared with next-to-leading order matrix element calculations combined with transverse-momentum dependent parton densities and transverse-momentum dependent parton shower.

  3. Abstract

A search is reported for pairs of light Higgs bosons ($${\textrm{H}} _1$$H1) produced in supersymmetric cascade decays in final states with small missing transverse momentum. A data set of LHC$$\hbox {pp}$$ppcollisions collected with the CMS detector at$$\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {TeV} $$s=13TeVand corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138$$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$fb-1is used. The search targets events where both$${\textrm{H}} _1$$H1bosons decay into Equation missing<#comment/>pairs that are reconstructed as large-radius jets using substructure techniques. No evidence is found for an excess of events beyond the background expectations of the standard model (SM). Results from the search are interpreted in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric extension of the SM, where a “singlino” of small mass leads to squark and gluino cascade decays that can predominantly end in a highly Lorentz-boosted singlet-like$${\textrm{H}} _1$$H1and a singlino-like neutralino of small transverse momentum. Upper limits are set on the product of the squark or gluino pair production cross section and the square of the Equation missing<#comment/>branching fraction of the$${\textrm{H}} _1$$H1in a benchmark model containing almost mass-degenerate gluinos and light-flavour squarks. Under the assumption of an SM-like Equation missing<#comment/>branching fraction,$${\textrm{H}} _1$$H1bosons with masses in the range 40–120$$\,\text {GeV}$$GeVarising from the decays of squarks or gluinos with a mass of 1200–2500$$\,\text {GeV}$$GeVare excluded at 95% confidence level.

  4. Abstract

Measurements of Higgs boson production, where the Higgs boson decays into a pair of$$\uptau $$τleptons, are presented, using a sample of proton-proton collisions collected with the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of Equation missing<#comment/>, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138$$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$fb-1. Three analyses are presented. Two are targeting Higgs boson production via gluon fusion and vector boson fusion: a neural network based analysis and an analysis based on an event categorization optimized on the ratio of signal over background events. These are complemented by an analysis targeting vector boson associated Higgs boson production. Results are presented in the form of signal strengths relative to the standard model predictions and products of cross sections and branching fraction to$$\uptau $$τleptons, in up to 16 different kinematic regions. For the simultaneous measurements of the neural network based analysis and the analysis targeting vector boson associated Higgs boson production signal strengths are found to be$$0.82\pm 0.11$$0.82±0.11for inclusive Higgs boson production,$$0.67\pm 0.19$$0.67±0.19($$0.81\pm 0.17$$0.81±0.17) for the production mainly via gluon fusion (vector boson fusion), and$$1.79\pm 0.45$$1.79±0.45for vector boson associated Higgs boson production.

  5. Abstract

The double differential cross sections of the Drell–Yan lepton pair ($$\ell ^+\ell ^-$$+-, dielectron or dimuon) production are measured as functions of the invariant mass$$m_{\ell \ell }$$m, transverse momentum$$p_{\textrm{T}} (\ell \ell )$$pT(), and$$\varphi ^{*}_{\eta }$$φη. The$$\varphi ^{*}_{\eta }$$φηobservable, derived from angular measurements of the leptons and highly correlated with$$p_{\textrm{T}} (\ell \ell )$$pT(), is used to probe the low-$$p_{\textrm{T}} (\ell \ell )$$pT()region in a complementary way. Dilepton masses up to 1$$\,\text {Te\hspace{-.08em}V}$$TeVare investigated. Additionally, a measurement is performed requiring at least one jet in the final state. To benefit from partial cancellation of the systematic uncertainty, the ratios of the differential cross sections for various$$m_{\ell \ell }$$mranges to those in the Z mass peak interval are presented. The collected data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36.3$$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$fb-1of proton–proton collisions recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13$$\,\text {Te\hspace{-.08em}V}$$TeV. Measurements are compared with predictions based on perturbative quantum chromodynamics, including soft-gluon resummation.

  6. Abstract A measurement of the jet mass distribution in hadronic decays of Lorentz-boosted top quarks is presented. The measurement is performed in the lepton + jets channel of top quark pair production ( $$\hbox {t}\overline{\hbox {t}}$$ t t ¯ ) events, where the lepton is an electron or muon. The products of the hadronic top quark decay are reconstructed using a single large-radius jet with transverse momentum greater than 400 $$\,\text {Ge}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V}$$ Ge V . The data were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 $$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ fb - 1 . The differential $$\hbox {t}\overline{\hbox {t}}$$ t t ¯ production cross section as a function of the jet mass is unfolded to the particle level and is used to extract the top quark mass. The jet mass scale is calibrated using the hadronic W boson decay within the large-radius jet. The uncertainties in the modelling of the final state radiation are reduced by studying angular correlations in the jet substructure. These developments lead to a significant increase in precision, and a top quark mass of $$173.06 \pm 0.84\,\text {Ge}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V} $$ 173.06 ± 0.84 Ge V .

  7. Abstract

Measurements of the associated production of a W boson and a charm ($${\text {c}}$$c) quark in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8$$\,\text {TeV}$$TeVare reported. The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 19.7$$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$fb-1collected by the CMS detector at the LHC. The W bosons are identified through their leptonic decays to an electron or a muon, and a neutrino. Charm quark jets are selected using distinctive signatures of charm hadron decays. The product of the cross section and branching fraction$$\sigma (\text {p}\text {p}\rightarrow \text {W}+ {\text {c}}+ \text {X}) {\mathcal {B}}(\text {W}\rightarrow \ell \upnu )$$σ(ppW+c+X)B(Wν), where$$\ell = \text {e}$$=eor$$\upmu $$μ, and the cross section ratio$$\sigma (\text {p}\text {p}\rightarrow {{\text {W}}^{+} + \bar{{\text {c}}} + \text {X}}) / \sigma (\text {p}\text {p}\rightarrow {{\text {W}}^{-} + {\text {c}}+ \text {X}})$$σ(ppW++c¯+X)/σ(ppW-+c+X)are measured in a fiducial volume and differentially as functions of the pseudorapidity and of the transverse momentum of the lepton from the W boson decay. The results are compared with theoretical predictions. The impact of these measurements on the determination of the strange quark distribution is assessed.

  9. Abstract A combination of searches for top squark pair production using proton–proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 $$\,\text {Te}\text {V}$$ Te at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 $$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ fb - 1 collected by the CMS experiment, is presented. Signatures with at least 2 jets and large missing transverse momentum are categorized into events with 0, 1, or 2 leptons. New results for regions of parameter space where the kinematical properties of top squark pair production and top quark pair production are very similar are presented. Depending on the model, the combined result excludes a top squark mass up to 1325 $$\,\text {Ge}\text {V}$$ Ge for a massless neutralino, and a neutralino mass up to 700 $$\,\text {Ge}\text {V}$$ Ge for a top squark mass of 1150 $$\,\text {Ge}\text {V}$$ Ge . Top squarks with masses from 145 to 295 $$\,\text {Ge}\text {V}$$ Ge , for neutralino masses from 0 to 100 $$\,\text {Ge}\text {V}$$ Ge , with a mass difference between the top squark and the neutralino in a window of 30 $$\,\text {Ge}\text {V}$$ Ge around the mass of the top quark, are excluded for the first time with CMS data. The results of theses searches are also interpreted in an alternative signal model of dark matter production via a spin-0 mediator in association with a top quark pair. Upper limits are set on the cross section for mediator particle masses of up to 420 $$\,\text {Ge}\text {V}$$ Ge .

Abstract Production cross sections of the Higgs boson are measured in the $${\mathrm{H}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} \rightarrow 4\ell $$ H → Z Z → 4 ℓ ( $$\ell ={\mathrm{e}},{{{\upmu }}_{\mathrm{}}^{\mathrm{}}} $$ ℓ = e , μ ) decay channel. A data sample of proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 $$\,\text {Te}\text {V}$$ Te , collected by the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 $$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ fb - 1 is used. The signal strength modifier $$\mu $$ μ , defined as the ratio of the Higgs boson production rate in the $$4\ell $$ 4 ℓ channel to the standard model (SM) expectation, is measured to be $$\mu =0.94 \pm 0.07 \,\text {(stat)} ^{+0.09}_{-0.08} \,\text {(syst)} $$ μ = 0.94 ± 0.07 (stat) - 0.08 + 0.09 (syst) at a fixed value of $$m_{{\mathrm{H}}} = 125.38\,\text {Ge}\text {V} $$ m H = 125.38 Ge . The signal strength modifiers for the individual Higgs boson production modes are also reported. The inclusive fiducial cross section for the $${\mathrm{H}} \rightarrow 4\ell $$ H → 4 ℓ process is measured to be $$2.84^{+0.23}_{-0.22} \,\text {(stat)} ^{+0.26}_{-0.21} \,\text {(syst)} \,\text {fb} $$ 2 . 84 - 0.22 + 0.23 (stat) - 0.21 + 0.26 (syst) fb , which is compatible with the SM prediction of $$2.84 \pm 0.15 \,\text {fb} $$ 2.84 ± 0.15 fb for the same fiducial region. Differential cross sections as a function of the transverse momentum and rapidity of the Higgs boson, the number of associated jets, and the transverse momentum of the leading associated jet are measured. A new set of cross section measurements in mutually exclusive categories targeted to identify production mechanisms and kinematical features of the events is presented. The results are in agreement with the SM predictions.
