A bstract A search for supersymmetry targeting the direct production of winos and higgsinos is conducted in final states with either two leptons (
e orμ ) with the same electric charge, or three leptons. The analysis uses 139 fb− 1ofpp collision data at = 13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess over the Standard Model expectation is observed. Simplified and complete models with and without$$ \sqrt{s} $$ R -parity conservation are considered. In topologies with intermediate states including eitherWh orWZ pairs, wino masses up to 525 GeV and 250 GeV are excluded, respectively, for a bino of vanishing mass. Higgsino masses smaller than 440 GeV are excluded in a naturalR -parity-violating model with bilinear terms. Upper limits on the production cross section of generic events beyond the Standard Model as low as 40 ab are obtained in signal regions optimised for these models and also for anR -parity-violating scenario with baryon-number-violating higgsino decays into top quarks and jets. The analysis significantly improves sensitivity to supersymmetric models and other processes beyond the Standard Model that may contribute to the considered final states.Free, publicly-accessible full text available November 1, 2024 -
A bstract A search for new physics in final states consisting of at least one photon, multiple jets, and large missing transverse momentum is presented, using proton-proton collision events at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb
− 1, recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC from 2016 to 2018. The events are divided into mutually exclusive bins characterized by the missing transverse momentum, the number of jets, the number of b-tagged jets, and jets consistent with the presence of hadronically decaying W, Z, or Higgs bosons. The observed data are found to be consistent with the prediction from standard model processes. The results are interpreted in the context of simplified models of pair production of supersymmetric particles via strong and electroweak interactions. Depending on the details of the signal models, gluinos and squarks of masses up to 2.35 and 1.43 TeV, respectively, and electroweakinos of masses up to 1.23 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level.Free, publicly-accessible full text available October 1, 2024 -
A bstract A search for high-mass dimuon resonance production in association with one or more b quark jets is presented. The study uses proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb
− 1at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Model-independent limits are derived on the number of signal events with exactly one or more than one b quark jet. Results are also interpreted in a lepton-flavor-universal model with Z′ boson couplings to a bb quark pair (g b), an sb quark pair (g bδ bs), and any same-flavor charged lepton (g ℓ ) or neutrino pair (g ν ), with|g ν | =|g ℓ | . For a Z′ boson with a mass = 350 GeV (2 TeV) and$$ {m}_{{\textrm{Z}}^{\prime }} $$ |δ bs| < 0.25, the majority of the parameter space with 0.0057 <|g ℓ | < 0.35 (0.25 <|g ℓ | < 0.43) and 0.0079 < |g b | < 0.46 (0.34 < |g b | < 0.57) is excluded at 95% confidence level. Finally, constraints are set on a Z′ model with parameters consistent with low-energy b → sℓℓ measurements. In this scenario, most of the allowed parameter space is excluded for a Z′ boson with 350 < < 500 GeV, while the constraints are less stringent for higher$$ {m}_{{\textrm{Z}}^{\prime }} $$ hypotheses. This is the first dedicated search at the LHC for a high-mass dimuon resonance produced in association with multiple b quark jets, and the constraints obtained on models with this signature are the most stringent to date.$$ {m}_{{\textrm{Z}}^{\prime }} $$ Free, publicly-accessible full text available October 1, 2024 -
Abstract The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN will undergo major upgrades to increase the instantaneous luminosity up to 5–7.5×10 34 cm -2 s -1 . This High Luminosity upgrade of the LHC (HL-LHC) will deliver a total of 3000–4000 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13–14 TeV. To cope with these challenging environmental conditions, the strip tracker of the CMS experiment will be upgraded using modules with two closely-spaced silicon sensors to provide information to include tracking in the Level-1 trigger selection. This paper describes the performance, in a test beam experiment, of the first prototype module based on the final version of the CMS Binary Chip front-end ASIC before and after the module was irradiated with neutrons. Results demonstrate that the prototype module satisfies the requirements, providing efficient tracking information, after being irradiated with a total fluence comparable to the one expected through the lifetime of the experiment.more » « less

A bstract A search for dark matter produced in association with a Higgs boson in final states with two hadronically decaying
τ -leptons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis uses 139 fb− 1of proton-proton collision data at = 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider between 2015 and 2018. No evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model is found. The results are interpreted in terms of a 2HDM+$$ \sqrt{s} $$ a model featuring two scalar Higgs doublets and a pseudoscalar singlet field. Exclusion limits on the parameters of the model in selected benchmark scenarios are derived at 95% confidence level. Model-independent limits are also set on the visible cross-section for processes beyond the Standard Model producing missing transverse momentum in association with a Higgs boson decaying intoτ -leptons.Free, publicly-accessible full text available September 1, 2024 -

Abstract A search for pair-produced vector-like quarks using events with exactly one lepton (
e or ), at least four jets including at least one$$\mu $$ b -tagged jet, and large missing transverse momentum is presented. Data from proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13$$\sqrt{s}=$$ , recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC from 2015 to 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$$\text {TeV}$$ , are analysed. Vector-like partners$$^{-1}$$ T andB of the top and bottom quarks are considered, as is a vector-likeX with charge , assuming their decay into a$$+5/3$$ W ,Z , or Higgs boson and a third-generation quark. No significant deviations from the Standard Model expectation are observed. Upper limits on the production cross-section ofT andB quark pairs as a function of their mass are derived for various decay branching ratio scenarios. The strongest lower limits on the masses are 1.59 assuming mass-degenerate vector-like quarks and branching ratios corresponding to the weak-isospin doublet model, and 1.47$$\text {TeV}$$ (1.46$$\text {TeV}$$ ) for exclusive$$\text {TeV}$$ ($$T \rightarrow Zt$$ ) decays. In addition, lower limits on the$$B/X \rightarrow Wt$$ T andB quark masses are derived for all possible branching ratios.Free, publicly-accessible full text available August 1, 2024 -
