  1. Abstract The production of Z bosons associated with jets is measured in $$\text {p}\text {p}$$ pp collisions at $$\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {Te}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V} $$ s = 13 Te V with data recorded with the CMS experiment at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3 $$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ fb - 1 . The multiplicity of jets with transverse momentum $$p_{\textrm{T}} > 30\,\text {Ge}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V} $$ p T > 30 Ge V is measured for different regions of the Z boson’s $$p_{\textrm{T}} (\text {Z })$$ p T ( Z ) , from lower than 10 $$\,\text {Ge}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V}$$ Ge V to higher than 100 $$\,\text {Ge}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V}$$ Ge V . The azimuthal correlation $$\varDelta \phi $$ Δ ϕ between the Z boson and the leading jet, as well as the correlations between the two leading jets are measured in three regions of $$p_{\textrm{T}} (\text {Z })$$ p T ( Z ) . The measurements are compared with several predictions at leading and next-to-leading orders, interfaced with parton showers. Predictions based on transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions and corresponding parton showers give a good description of the measurement in the regions where multiple parton interactions and higher jet multiplicities are not important. The effects of multiple parton interactions are shown to be important to correctly describe the measured spectra in the low $$p_{\textrm{T}} (\text {Z })$$ p T ( Z ) regions.

  2. Abstract Multijet events at large transverse momentum ( $$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ p T ) are measured at $$\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {TeV} $$ s = 13 TeV using data recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $$36.3{\,\text {fb}^{-1}} $$ 36.3 fb - 1 . The multiplicity of jets with $$p_{\textrm{T}} >50\,\text {GeV} $$ p T > 50 GeV that are produced in association with a high- $$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ p T dijet system is measured in various ranges of the $$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ p T of the jet with the highest transverse momentum and as a function of the azimuthal angle difference $$\varDelta \phi _{1,2}$$ Δ ϕ 1 , 2 between the two highest $$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ p T jets in the dijet system. The differential production cross sections are measured as a function of the transverse momenta of the four highest $$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ p T jets. The measurements are compared with leading and next-to-leading order matrix element calculations supplemented with simulations of parton shower, hadronization, and multiparton interactions. In addition, the measurements are compared with next-to-leading order matrix element calculations combined with transverse-momentum dependent parton densities and transverse-momentum dependent parton shower.

  3. Abstract

A search is reported for pairs of light Higgs bosons ($${\textrm{H}} _1$$H1) produced in supersymmetric cascade decays in final states with small missing transverse momentum. A data set of LHC$$\hbox {pp}$$ppcollisions collected with the CMS detector at$$\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {TeV} $$s=13TeVand corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138$$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$fb-1is used. The search targets events where both$${\textrm{H}} _1$$H1bosons decay into Equation missing<#comment/>pairs that are reconstructed as large-radius jets using substructure techniques. No evidence is found for an excess of events beyond the background expectations of the standard model (SM). Results from the search are interpreted in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric extension of the SM, where a “singlino” of small mass leads to squark and gluino cascade decays that can predominantly end in a highly Lorentz-boosted singlet-like$${\textrm{H}} _1$$H1and a singlino-like neutralino of small transverse momentum. Upper limits are set on the product of the squark or gluino pair production cross section and the square of the Equation missing<#comment/>branching fraction of the$${\textrm{H}} _1$$H1in a benchmark model containing almost mass-degenerate gluinos and light-flavour squarks. Under the assumption of an SM-like Equation missing<#comment/>branching fraction,$${\textrm{H}} _1$$H1bosons with masses in the range 40–120$$\,\text {GeV}$$GeVarising from the decays of squarks or gluinos with a mass of 1200–2500$$\,\text {GeV}$$GeVare excluded at 95% confidence level.

  4. Abstract

Measurements of Higgs boson production, where the Higgs boson decays into a pair of$$\uptau $$τleptons, are presented, using a sample of proton-proton collisions collected with the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of Equation missing<#comment/>, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138$$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$fb-1. Three analyses are presented. Two are targeting Higgs boson production via gluon fusion and vector boson fusion: a neural network based analysis and an analysis based on an event categorization optimized on the ratio of signal over background events. These are complemented by an analysis targeting vector boson associated Higgs boson production. Results are presented in the form of signal strengths relative to the standard model predictions and products of cross sections and branching fraction to$$\uptau $$τleptons, in up to 16 different kinematic regions. For the simultaneous measurements of the neural network based analysis and the analysis targeting vector boson associated Higgs boson production signal strengths are found to be$$0.82\pm 0.11$$0.82±0.11for inclusive Higgs boson production,$$0.67\pm 0.19$$0.67±0.19($$0.81\pm 0.17$$0.81±0.17) for the production mainly via gluon fusion (vector boson fusion), and$$1.79\pm 0.45$$1.79±0.45for vector boson associated Higgs boson production.

  5. Abstract

The double differential cross sections of the Drell–Yan lepton pair ($$\ell ^+\ell ^-$$+-, dielectron or dimuon) production are measured as functions of the invariant mass$$m_{\ell \ell }$$m, transverse momentum$$p_{\textrm{T}} (\ell \ell )$$pT(), and$$\varphi ^{*}_{\eta }$$φη. The$$\varphi ^{*}_{\eta }$$φηobservable, derived from angular measurements of the leptons and highly correlated with$$p_{\textrm{T}} (\ell \ell )$$pT(), is used to probe the low-$$p_{\textrm{T}} (\ell \ell )$$pT()region in a complementary way. Dilepton masses up to 1$$\,\text {Te\hspace{-.08em}V}$$TeVare investigated. Additionally, a measurement is performed requiring at least one jet in the final state. To benefit from partial cancellation of the systematic uncertainty, the ratios of the differential cross sections for various$$m_{\ell \ell }$$mranges to those in the Z mass peak interval are presented. The collected data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36.3$$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$fb-1of proton–proton collisions recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13$$\,\text {Te\hspace{-.08em}V}$$TeV. Measurements are compared with predictions based on perturbative quantum chromodynamics, including soft-gluon resummation.

  6. Abstract

Measurements of the associated production of a W boson and a charm ($${\text {c}}$$c) quark in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8$$\,\text {TeV}$$TeVare reported. The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 19.7$$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$fb-1collected by the CMS detector at the LHC. The W bosons are identified through their leptonic decays to an electron or a muon, and a neutrino. Charm quark jets are selected using distinctive signatures of charm hadron decays. The product of the cross section and branching fraction$$\sigma (\text {p}\text {p}\rightarrow \text {W}+ {\text {c}}+ \text {X}) {\mathcal {B}}(\text {W}\rightarrow \ell \upnu )$$σ(ppW+c+X)B(Wν), where$$\ell = \text {e}$$=eor$$\upmu $$μ, and the cross section ratio$$\sigma (\text {p}\text {p}\rightarrow {{\text {W}}^{+} + \bar{{\text {c}}} + \text {X}}) / \sigma (\text {p}\text {p}\rightarrow {{\text {W}}^{-} + {\text {c}}+ \text {X}})$$σ(ppW++c¯+X)/σ(ppW-+c+X)are measured in a fiducial volume and differentially as functions of the pseudorapidity and of the transverse momentum of the lepton from the W boson decay. The results are compared with theoretical predictions. The impact of these measurements on the determination of the strange quark distribution is assessed.

  7. Abstract Using a data sample of $$\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {TeV}$$ s = 13 TeV proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2017 and 2018 with an integrated luminosity of $$103\text {~fb}^{-1}$$ 103 fb - 1 , the $$\text {B}^{0}_{\mathrm{s}} \rightarrow \uppsi (\text {2S})\text {K}_\mathrm{S}^{0}$$ B s 0 → ψ ( 2S ) K S 0 and $$\text {B}^{0} \rightarrow \uppsi (\text {2S})\text {K}_\mathrm{S}^{0} \uppi ^+\uppi ^-$$ B 0 → ψ ( 2S ) K S 0 π + π - decays are observed with significances exceeding 5 standard deviations. 8. Abstract A combination of searches for top squark pair production using proton–proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 $$\,\text {Te}\text {V}$$ Te at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 $$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ fb - 1 collected by the CMS experiment, is presented. Signatures with at least 2 jets and large missing transverse momentum are categorized into events with 0, 1, or 2 leptons. New results for regions of parameter space where the kinematical properties of top squark pair production and top quark pair production are very similar are presented. Depending on the model, the combined result excludes a top squark mass up to 1325 $$\,\text {Ge}\text {V}$$ Ge for a massless neutralino, and a neutralino mass up to 700 $$\,\text {Ge}\text {V}$$ Ge for a top squark mass of 1150 $$\,\text {Ge}\text {V}$$ Ge . Top squarks with masses from 145 to 295 $$\,\text {Ge}\text {V}$$ Ge , for neutralino masses from 0 to 100 $$\,\text {Ge}\text {V}$$ Ge , with a mass difference between the top squark and the neutralino in a window of 30 $$\,\text {Ge}\text {V}$$ Ge around the mass of the top quark, are excluded for the first time with CMS data. The results of theses searches are also interpreted in an alternative signal model of dark matter production via a spin-0 mediator in association with a top quark pair. Upper limits are set on the cross section for mediator particle masses of up to 420 $$\,\text {Ge}\text {V}$$ Ge .

    Abstract The rate for Higgs ( $${\mathrm{H}} $$ H ) bosons production in association with either one ( $${\mathrm{t}} {\mathrm{H}} $$ t H ) or two ( $${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $$ t t ¯ H ) top quarks is measured in final states containing multiple electrons, muons, or tau leptons decaying to hadrons and a neutrino, using proton–proton collisions recorded at a center-of-mass energy of $$13\,\text {TeV} $$ 13 TeV by the CMS experiment. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137 $$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ fb - 1 . The analysis is aimed at events that contain $${\mathrm{H}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{W}} {\mathrm{W}} $$ H → W W , $${\mathrm{H}} \rightarrow {\uptau } {\uptau } $$ H → τ τ , or $${\mathrm{H}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} $$ H → Z Z decays and each of the top quark(s) decays either to lepton+jets or all-jet channels. Sensitivity to signal is maximized by including ten signatures in the analysis, depending on the lepton multiplicity. The separation among $${\mathrm{t}} {\mathrm{H}} $$ t H , $${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $$ t t ¯ H , and the backgrounds is enhanced through machine-learning techniques and matrix-element methods. The measured production rates for the $${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $$ t t ¯ H and $${\mathrm{t}} {\mathrm{H}} $$ t H signals correspond to $$0.92 \pm 0.19\,\text {(stat)} ^{+0.17}_{-0.13}\,\text {(syst)} $$ 0.92 ± 0.19 (stat) - 0.13 + 0.17 (syst) and $$5.7 \pm 2.7\,\text {(stat)} \pm 3.0\,\text {(syst)} $$ 5.7 ± 2.7 (stat) ± 3.0 (syst) of their respective standard model (SM) expectations. The corresponding observed (expected) significance amounts to 4.7 (5.2) standard deviations for $${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $$ t t ¯ H , and to 1.4 (0.3) for $${\mathrm{t}} {\mathrm{H}} $$ t H production. Assuming that the Higgs boson coupling to the tau lepton is equal in strength to its expectation in the SM, the coupling $$y_{{\mathrm{t}}}$$ y t of the Higgs boson to the top quark divided by its SM expectation, $$\kappa _{{\mathrm{t}}}=y_{{\mathrm{t}}}/y_{{\mathrm{t}}}^{\mathrm {SM}}$$ κ t = y t / y t SM , is constrained to be within $$-0.9< \kappa _{{\mathrm{t}}}< -0.7$$ - 0.9 < κ t < - 0.7 or $$0.7< \kappa _{{\mathrm{t}}}< 1.1$$ 0.7 < κ t < 1.1 , at 95% confidence level. This result is the most sensitive measurement of the $${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $$ t t ¯ H production rate to date.

Abstract A search for dark matter particles is performed using events with a Z boson candidate and large missing transverse momentum. The analysis is based on proton–proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 $$\,\text {Te}\text {V}$$ Te , collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 $$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ fb - 1 . The search uses the decay channels $${\mathrm{Z}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{e}} {\mathrm{e}} $$ Z → e e and $${\mathrm{Z}} \rightarrow {{\upmu }{}{}} {{\upmu }{}{}} $$ Z → μ μ . No significant excess of events is observed over the background expected from the standard model. Limits are set on dark matter particle production in the context of simplified models with vector, axial-vector, scalar, and pseudoscalar mediators, as well as on a two-Higgs-doublet model with an additional pseudoscalar mediator. In addition, limits are provided for spin-dependent and spin-independent scattering cross sections and are compared to those from direct-detection experiments. The results are also interpreted in the context of models of invisible Higgs boson decays, unparticles, and large extra dimensions.
