Title: Spatially Dependent Transfer Functions for Web Lateral Dynamics
In this paper we derive spatially dependent transfer functions for web span lateral dynamics which provide web lateral position and slope as outputs at any location in the span; the inputs are guide roller displacement, web lateral position disturbances from upstream spans, and disturbances due to misaligned rollers. This is in sharp contrast to the existing approach where only web lateral position response is available on the rollers. We describe the inherent drawbacks of the existing approach and how the new approach overcomes them. The new approach relies on taking the 1D Laplace transform with respect to the temporal variable of both the web governing equation and the boundary conditions. One can also obtain the web slope at any location within the web span with the proposed approach. A general span lateral transfer function, which is an explicit function of the spatial position along the span, is obtained first followed by its application to different intermediate guide configurations.  more » « less

  1. The lateral deformations of webs in roll-to-roll (R2R) process machines can affect the quality of the manufacturing process. Webs can enter a cylindrical roller normally if the forces required to sustain normal entry and do not exceed the available friction forces. Webs with simple non-uniform length variation across their width (camber) will steer toward the long side, affecting the steady state lateral deformation and hence registration. Most previous studies have focused on tests and modeling a cambered web span in a free span between two rollers. Often these studies assume some displacement and slope boundary conditions are known and seek the remaining condition(s) that would dictate the steady state lateral deformation of the cambered web in the free span. In many spans in a process machine there may be no known boundary conditions and no steady state deformation of the cambered web. The web may travel toward the long side continually from one web span until the next until a web guide attempts to return the web to an acceptable lateral location in the process machine. The simplest case of multiple span cambered web lateral behavior is that of a cambered web belt transiting two aligned rollers which is the focus of the current work. Dynamic simulation (Abaqus/Standard) has been used to better understand the response of cambered webs under tension that has been witnessed in tests.

  2. Near-field resonant-based wireless power transfer (WPT) technology has a significant impact in many applications ranging from charging of biomedical implants to electric vehicles (EVs). The design of robust WPT systems is challenging due to its position-dependent power transfer efficiency (PTE). In this paper, a new approach is presented to address WPT's strong sensitivity to the coupling factor variation between the transmit and receive coils. The introduced technique relies on harnessing the unique properties of a specific class of nonlinear resonant circuits to design position-insensitive WPT systems that maintain a high PTE over large transmission distances and misalignments without tuning the source's operating frequency or employing tunable matching networks, as well as any active feedback/control circuitry. A nonlinear-resonant-based WPT circuit capable of transmitting 60 W at 2.25 MHz is designed and fabricated. The circuit maintains a high PTE of 86% over a transmission distance variation of 20 cm. Furthermore, transmit power and PTE are maintained over a large lateral misalignment up to ±50% of the coil diameter and angular misalignment up to ±75°. The new design approach enhances the performance of WPT systems by significantly extending the range of coupling factors over which both load power and high PTE are maintained.

  3. Webs are subjected to large out-of-plane deformations when transiting rollers in process machinery. Webs are often treated as membranes in analysis but become subject to significant bending strains when transiting rollers. Anticlastic bending of thick plates is a known phenomenon. The anticlastic effect is often ignored for webs which are thin. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate that the large bending deformations webs are subjected to on rollers influence the internal membrane stresses and deformations in the web. The results will show that the concept of normal entry of a web to a roller has complexity that has previously not been considered. It will be demonstrated that a cross direction tensile membrane stress results from the large deformations that acts to stabilize the web and inhibit wrinkle formation.

  4. Abstract Electron counting can be performed algorithmically for monolithic active pixel sensor direct electron detectors to eliminate readout noise and Landau noise arising from the variability in the amount of deposited energy for each electron. Errors in existing counting algorithms include mistakenly counting a multielectron strike as a single electron event, and inaccurately locating the incident position of the electron due to lateral spread of deposited energy and dark noise. Here, we report a supervised deep learning (DL) approach based on Faster region-based convolutional neural network (R-CNN) to recognize single electron events at varying electron doses and voltages. The DL approach shows high accuracy according to the near-ideal modulation transfer function (MTF) and detector quantum efficiency for sparse images. It predicts, on average, 0.47 pixel deviation from the incident positions for 200 kV electrons versus 0.59 pixel using the conventional counting method. The DL approach also shows better robustness against coincidence loss as the electron dose increases, maintaining the MTF at half Nyquist frequency above 0.83 as the electron density increases to 0.06 e−/pixel. Thus, the DL model extends the advantages of counting analysis to higher dose rates than conventional methods.

  5. Abstract Aquatic invasive species (AIS) threaten biodiversity and ecosystem services around the world, but their management has been hampered by the lack of quantifiable control targets. The introduction of Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) throughout the mid‐western United States epitomizes both the impacts of AIS and the need for quantitative control targets. Silver Carp are large‐bodied planktivores that compete with native planktivores, which can cause cascading effects throughout the food web. Our study tested the threshold of abundance beyond which Silver Carp alter fish assemblage structure. We used a community size spectra (CSS) approach to evaluate fish community size structure across temporal and spatial gradients of Silver Carp abundances. We hypothesized that Silver Carp would flatten the size spectra slope because they are large‐bodied and feed at a low trophic position. Electrofishing data were obtained for the La Grange Pool of the Illinois River (1994–2021) and for six pools of the Ohio River (2015–2020). Results supported our hypothesis, showing a 98% probability that the relative biomass of Silver Carp is positively related to the CSS slope (resulting in “flattening”). This pattern was strongest in the Illinois River, where Silver Carp made up >30% of fish assemblage biomass in recent years. The pattern was weakest in the Ohio River (78% probability of a positive relationship) where Silver Carp rarely exceeded 20% of total fish biomass. Subsequent changepoint models indicated that a Silver Carp relative biomass of ~24% represents a threshold below which negative food web impacts should be minimized. Our study demonstrates a clear shift in fish community size structure following invasion by Silver Carp and suggests that pre‐invasion CSS slopes may serve as a restoration target. It also illustrates the benefits of CSS to guide Silver Carp and other AIS management.
