Title: Micromirror based optical phased array for wide-angle beamsteering
Optical phased array (OPA) is a key enabling element for solid state LIDAR (light detection and ranging). In this paper, we demonstrate a novel MEMS micromirror array OPA. Vertical combdrive actuators are integrated underneath the mirrors to achieve a small pitch (2.4μm) and a large field of view (22° at 905nm wavelength and 40° at 1550nm). The OPA has 2μs response time, and 10V actuation voltage.  more » « less

  2. The design, fabrication, and characterization of a 16-element optical phased array (OPA) using a high index (n = 3.1) silicon-rich silicon nitride (SRN) is demonstrated. We present one-dimensional beam steering with end-fire facet antennas over a wide steering range of >115° at a fixed wavelength of 1525 nm. A beam width of 6.3° has been measured at boresight, consistent with theory. We demonstrate SRN as a viable material choice for chip-scale OPA applications due to its high thermo-optic coefficient, high optical power handling capacity [negligible two-photon absorption (TPA)], wide transparency window, and CMOS compatibility.

  3. In this Letter, we present the first, to the best of our knowledge, liquid-crystal-based integrated optical phased arrays (OPAs) that enable visible-light beam forming and steering. A cascaded OPA architecture is developed and experimentally shown to emit a beam in the far field at a 632.8-nm wavelength with a power full width at half maximum of 0.4°×1.6° and 7.2° beam-steering range within ±3.4 V. Furthermore, we show the first visible-light integrated-OPA-based free-space-optical-communications transmitter and use it to demonstrate the first integrated-OPA-based underwater-wireless-optical-communications link. We experimentally demonstrate a 1-Gbps on–off-keying link through water and an electronically-switchable point-to-multipoint link with channel selectivity greater than 19 dB through a water-filled tank.

  4. The OPA model calculates the long-term risk of cascading blackouts by simulating cascading outages and the slow process of network upgrade in response to blackouts. We validate OPA on a detailed 19402 bus network model of the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) interconnection with publicly available data. To do this, we examine scalings on a series of WECC interconnection models with increasing detail. The most detailed, 19402 bus network has more tree structures at the edges of the main mesh structure, and we extend the OPA model to account for this. The higher-risk cascading outages are the large cascades that extend across interconnections, so validating cascading models on large networks is crucial to understanding how the real grid behaves. Finally, exploring networks with mixed mesh and tree like structure has implications for the risk analysis for both the transmission grid and other network infrastructures.

We demonstrate that hybridization of OPA and idler SHG produces desirable nonlinear dynamics equivalent to OPA with idler loss, despite being a fully conservative system. Both systems take the form of a damped Duffing oscillator.
