Title: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Examining Postdisaster School Recovery
Abstract This perspectives article uses a postdisaster school recovery research domain to examine two tenets of interdisciplinary research (IDR): integrative problem formulation and synthesis. Advancing interdisciplinary knowledge requires a “roadmap” of commonalities between disciplinary domains and outcomes of interest. Four school recovery domains—child trauma, educational learning outcomes, school safety, and household and community recovery—are presented to highlight common frameworks for IDR. A case study is also used to illustrate the value of interdisciplinary research and mixed‐methods approaches, including statistics, geospatial analysis, and spatial statistics, for answering questions regarding how school contexts and location influence school recovery patterns.  more » « less

  1. Abstract Purpose of ReviewPreparing for pandemics requires a degree of interdisciplinary work that is challenging under the current paradigm. This review summarizes the challenges faced by the field of pandemic science and proposes how to address them. Recent FindingsThe structure of current siloed systems of research organizations hinders effective interdisciplinary pandemic research. Moreover, effective pandemic preparedness requires stakeholders in public policy and health to interact and integrate new findings rapidly, relying on a robust, responsive, and productive research domain. Neither of these requirements are well supported under the current system. SummaryWe propose a new paradigm for pandemic preparedness wherein interdisciplinary research and close collaboration with public policy and health practitioners can improve our ability to prevent, detect, and treat pandemics through tighter integration among domains, rapid and accurate integration, and translation of science to public policy, outreach and education, and improved venues and incentives for sustainable and robust interdisciplinary work.

  2. This workshop report summarizes outcomes in three broadband domains: technologies, usage and effects. Within each domain critical themes are presented. The 40 page report concludes with recommendations for fostering interdisciplinary broadband research, developing a network of scholars and enhancing publicly accessible data to generate enhanced knowledge of the role of broadband for the U.S.

  3. Abstract: There is a consensus to introduce data science to secondary schools. However, data science is interdisciplinary in nature and not easy to teach in K−12 settings. We proposed a new approach to integrate mathematics, statistics, and programming—the foundations of data science—for high school students based on set theory and logic. We developed an 8-week data science foundation course and implemented it in a public high school. We conducted semistructured group interviews to collect students’ feedback on the course and the new approach. Students thought the approach could well connect the topics and helped them learn the interdisciplinary content.

Graduate level statistics education curricula often emphasize technical instruction in theory and methodology but can fail to provide adequate practical training in applications and collaboration skills. We argue that a statistical collaboration center (“stat lab”) structured in the style of the University of Colorado Boulder’s Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis (LISA) is an effective mechanism for providing graduate students with necessary training in technical, non-technical, and job-related skills. We summarize the operating structure of LISA, and then provide evidence of its positive impact on students via analyses of a survey completed by 123 collaborators who worked in LISA between 2008–15 while it was housed at Virginia Tech. Students described their work in LISA as having had a positive impact on acquiring technical (94%) and non-technical (95%) statistics skills. Five-sixths (83%) of the students reported that these skills will or have helped them advance in their careers. We call for the integration of stat labs into statistics and data science programs as part of a comprehensive and modern statistics education, and for further research on students’ experience in these labs and the impact on student outcomes.

    Abstract Sense of place describes both affective and cognitive — emotional and intellectual — connections to place. Affective outcomes, tied to arts and humanities education, can facilitate these connections. But little research explores environmental science, arts and humanities (eSAH) curricula on place relationships. Additionally, most research on the sense of place focuses on repeated visits to a place over time, rather than short-term experiences like a field trip. Finally, digital technology is a growing trend across science education, but little research investigates its use in field-based contexts. Our research begins to address these gaps. This article describes an eSAH field trip for middle and high school learners. Using a conventional content analysis, we present pilot data from two high school field trips. Our findings illuminate a framework for understanding active and passive place relationships in the context of short-term interdisciplinary field learning experiences.
