Title: Electrowetting prism for scanning in two-photon microscopy
We have demonstrated an electrowetting prism as a lateral scanning element for a 2-photon excitation microscope. We show imaging of mouse hippocampal neurons, with a field of view of 130 × 130 µm2.  more » « less

    Abstract The CUORE experiment is a large bolometric array searching for the lepton number violating neutrino-less double beta decay ( $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β ) in the isotope $$\mathrm {^{130}Te}$$ 130 Te . In this work we present the latest results on two searches for the double beta decay (DBD) of $$\mathrm {^{130}Te}$$ 130 Te to the first $$0^{+}_2$$ 0 2 + excited state of $$\mathrm {^{130}Xe}$$ 130 Xe : the $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β decay and the Standard Model-allowed two-neutrinos double beta decay ( $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β ). Both searches are based on a 372.5 kg $$\times $$ × yr TeO $$_2$$ 2 exposure. The de-excitation gamma rays emitted by the excited Xe nucleus in the final state yield a unique signature, which can be searched for with low background by studying coincident events in two or more bolometers. The closely packed arrangement of the CUORE crystals constitutes a significant advantage in this regard. The median limit setting sensitivities at 90% Credible Interval (C.I.) of the given searches were estimated as $$\mathrm {S^{0\nu }_{1/2} = 5.6 \times 10^{24} \, \mathrm {yr}}$$ S 1 / 2 0 ν = 5.6 × 10 24 yr for the $${0\nu \beta \beta }$$ 0 ν β β decay and $$\mathrm {S^{2\nu }_{1/2} = 2.1 \times 10^{24} \, \mathrm {yr}}$$ S 1 / 2 2 ν = 2.1 × 10 24 yr for the $${2\nu \beta \beta }$$ 2 ν β β decay. No significant evidence for either of the decay modes was observed and a Bayesian lower bound at $$90\%$$ 90 % C.I. on the decay half lives is obtained as: $$\mathrm {(T_{1/2})^{0\nu }_{0^+_2} > 5.9 \times 10^{24} \, \mathrm {yr}}$$ ( T 1 / 2 ) 0 2 + 0 ν > 5.9 × 10 24 yr for the $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β mode and $$\mathrm {(T_{1/2})^{2\nu }_{0^+_2} > 1.3 \times 10^{24} \, \mathrm {yr}}$$ ( T 1 / 2 ) 0 2 + 2 ν > 1.3 × 10 24 yr for the $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β mode. These represent the most stringent limits on the DBD of $$^{130}$$ 130 Te to excited states and improve by a factor $$\sim 5$$ ∼ 5 the previous results on this process.

Abstract We report the rotational lightcurves of 21 trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) in Neptune’s 2:1 mean motion resonance obtained with the 6.5 m Magellan-Baade telescope and the 4.3 m Lowell Discovery Telescope. The main survey’s goal is to find objects displaying a large lightcurve amplitude that is indicative of contact binaries or highly elongated objects. In our sample, two 2:1 resonant TNOs showed a significant short-term lightcurve amplitude: 2002 VD130and (531074) 2012 DX98. The full lightcurve of 2012 DX98infers a periodicity of 20.80 ± 0.06 hr and amplitude of 0.56 ± 0.03 mag, whereas 2002 VD130rotates in 9.85 ± 0.07 hr with a 0.31 ± 0.04 mag lightcurve amplitude. Based on lightcurve morphology, we classify (531074) 2012 DX98as a likely contact binary but 2002 VD130as a likely single elongated object. Based on our sample and the lightcurves reported in the literature, we estimate the lower percentage of nearly equal-sized contact binaries at only 7%–14% in the 2:1 resonance, which is comparable to the low fraction reported for the dynamically cold classical TNOs. This low contact binary fraction in the 2:1 Neptune resonance is consistent with the lower estimate of the recent numerical modeling. We report the Sloang′,r′, andi′ surface colors of 2002 VD130, which is an ultra-red TNO whereas 2012 DX98is a very red object based on published surface colors.

  3. Our understanding of ownership influences how we interact with objects and with each other. Here, we studied people’s intuitions about ownership transfer using a set of simple, parametrically varied events. We found that people ( N = 120 U.S. adults) had similar intuitions about ownership for some events but sharply opposing intuitions for others (Experiment 1). People ( N = 120 U.S. adults) were unaware of these conflicts and overestimated ownership consensus (Experiment 2). Moreover, differences in people’s ownership intuitions predicted their intuitions about the acceptability of using, altering, controlling, and destroying the owned object ( N = 130 U.S. adults; Experiment 3), even when ownership was not explicitly mentioned ( N = 130 U.S. adults; Experiment 4). Subject-level analyses suggest that these disagreements reflect at least two underlying intuitive theories, one in which intentions are central to ownership and another in which physical possession is prioritized.

  5. Diverse sets of complete human genomes are required to construct a pangenome reference and to understand the extent of complex structural variation. Here, we sequence 65 diverse human genomes and build 130 haplotype-resolved assemblies (130 Mbp median continuity), closing 92% of all previous assembly gaps and reaching telomere-to-telomere (T2T) status for 39% of the chromosomes. We highlight complete sequence continuity of complex loci, including the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), SMN1/SMN2, NBPF8, and AMY1/AMY2, and fully resolve 1,852 complex structural variants (SVs). In addition, we completely assemble and validate 1,246 human centromeres. We find up to 30-fold variation in α-satellite high-order repeat (HOR) array length and characterize the pattern of mobile element insertions into α-satellite HOR arrays. While most centromeres predict a single site of kinetochore attachment, epigenetic analysis suggests the presence of two hypomethylated regions for 7% of centromeres. Combining our data with the draft pangenome reference significantly enhances genotyping accuracy from short-read data, enabling whole-genome inference to a median quality value (QV) of 45. Using this approach, 26,115 SVs per sample are detected, substantially increasing the number of SVs now amenable to downstream disease association studies.
