Title: English and Language Arts Teachers’ Perspectives on Schooling: Initial Exposure to a Teacher Education Curriculum
This article reports results from a study of teacher beliefs among a panel of English and language arts teachers at three universities as the pre-service teachers entered methodological coursework and internships. Using a new assessment tool, the Developmental Instruction Assessment Battery (DIAB), along with a discrete choice task and one-on-one interviews, teachers reported their developing perspectives on (1) competition in the classroom, (2) hierarchies of traditional academic material, and (3) related views on classroom order, engagement, and teacher authority. We contrast these findings to beliefs reported by a sample of mid-career middle school English and language arts teachers in Western Pennsylvania.  more » « less

A teacher survey (N = 290) based on the social reasoning developmental model investigated (1) beliefs and values about using class time for discussing discrimination and reported frequency of discussing discrimination based on different social identities and (2) factors predicting teachers’ frequency for discussing racial discrimination in the classroom. Most participants reported beliefs that all five identities were worth discussing in class, yet teachers most strongly believed that wealth, race, and native language affect students’ education. Higher beliefs that prejudice can change, school support, and beliefs that race affects students’ education predicted higher teacher reports for talking about racial discrimination.

  2. Despite the increasing attention to infusing CT into middle and high school content area classrooms, there is a lack of information about the most effective practices and models to support teachers in their efforts to integrate disciplinary content and CT principles. To address this need, this paper proposes the Code, Connect and Create (3C) professional development (PD) model, which was designed to support middle and high school content area teachers in infusing computational thinking into their classrooms. To evaluate the model, we analyzed quantitative and qualitative data collected from Infusing Computing PD workshops designed for in-service science, math, English language arts, and social studies teachers located in two Southeastern states. Drawing on findings from our analysis of teacher-created learning segments, surveys, and interviews, we argue that the 3C professional development model supported shifts in teacher understandings of the role of computational thinking in content area classrooms, as well as their self-efficacy and beliefs regarding CT integration into disciplinary content. We conclude by offering implications for the use of this model to increase teacher and student access to computational thinking practices in middle and high school classrooms.

In this study, we examine the reported beliefs of two elementary science teachers who co-taught a four-week engineering project in which students used a computational model to design engineering solutions to reduce water runoff at their school (Lilly et al., 2020). Specifically, we explore the beliefs that elementary science teachers report while enacting an engineering project in two different classroom contexts and how they report that their beliefs may have affected instructional decisions. Classroom contexts included one general class with a larger proportion of students in advanced mathematics and one inclusive class with a larger proportion of students with individualized educational programs. During project implementation, we collected daily surveys and weekly interviews to consider teachers’ beliefs of the class sections, classroom activities, and curriculum. Two researchers performed a thematic analysis of the surveys and interviews to code reflections on teachers’ perceived differences between students in the class sections and their experiences teaching engineering in the class sections. Results suggest that teachers’ beliefs about students in these two different classroom contexts may have influenced opportunities that students had to understand and engage in disciplinary practices. The teachers reported making changes to activities based on their perceptions of student understanding and engagement and to save time which led to different experiences for students in each class section, specifically a more teacher-centered implementation for the inclusive class. Teachers also suggested specific professional development and educative supports to help teachers to support all students to engage in engineering tasks. Thus, it is important to understand teachers’ beliefs to build support for teachers in their implementation of engineering projects that meet the needs of their students and ensure that students have access and support to engage in engineering practices.

We present the Teacher Talk Tool, which automatically analyzes classroom audio and provides formative feedback on key aspects of teachers’ classroom discourse (e.g., use of open-ended questions). The tool was designed to promote teacher learning by focusing attention and sense-making on their discourse. We conducted a feedback- response study where five English & Language Art teachers used the Teacher Talk Tool in eight classroom sessions. Teachers completed repeated-measure surveys and semi-structured interviews providing quantitative and qualitative evidence of feedback response. Results indicated that the majority of automated feedback was perceived to be accurate and prompted a high degree of reflection, focusing teachers’ attention on the measured talk constructs. This feedback also led teachers to engage in a process of sense-making, linking the measured talk features to classroom processes and contexts. However, evidence of feedback uptake was more limited. Overall, results contribute to the nascent literature on the efficacy of automated feedback on instructional practice.

    A way to evaluate an assessment’s worth is in its contributions to student learning (Cronbach, 1988). “Classrooms are complex social environments. Economic, language, cultural, and mental health issues are just some of the key variables that need to be considered in relation to students [learning]” (Leighton, 2020, p. 27). Teachers provide a unique influence on their students’ learning through their beliefs, content knowledge, and pedagogical content knowledge (Brookhart, 2003). A classroom’s social context is an area where teacher-created assessments differ from externally-developed standardized assessments. One goal of standardized testing is to eliminate psychometric noise like social contexts by attempting to account for factors not related to the construct being measured (AERA et al., 2014). On the other hand, teacher-created assessments are contextually relevant as they are developed with certain students in mind (Brookhart, 2003). Teacher-created assessments are more likely to align with a unique social context of a classroom. The purpose of this study is to explore middle grades math teachers assessment practices and impact on student learning.
