Title: Photoelectron spectroscopy and thermochemistry of o -, m -, and p -methylenephenoxide anions
The anionic products following (H + H + ) abstraction from o -, m -, and p -methylphenol (cresol) are investigated using flowing afterglow-selected ion flow tube (FA-SIFT) mass spectrometry and anion photoelectron spectroscopy (PES). The PES of the multiple anion isomers formed in this reaction are reported, including those for the most abundant isomers, o -, m - and p -methylenephenoxide distonic radical anions. The electron affinity (EA) of the ground triplet electronic state of neutral m -methylenephenoxyl diradical was measured to be 2.227 ± 0.008 eV. However, the ground singlet electronic states of o - and p -methylenephenoxyl were found to be significantly stabilized by their resonance forms as a substituted cyclohexadienone, resulting in measured EAs of 1.217 ± 0.012 and 1.096 ± 0.007 eV, respectively. Upon electron photodetachment, the resulting neutral molecules were shown to have Franck–Condon active ring distortion vibrational modes with measured frequencies of 570 ± 180 and 450 ± 80 cm −1 for the ortho and para isomers, respectively. Photodetachment to excited electronic states was also investigated for all isomers, where similar vibrational modes were found to be Franck–Condon active, and singlet–triplet splittings are reported. The thermochemistry of these molecules was investigated using FA-SIFT combined with the acid bracketing technique to yield values of 341.4 ± 4.3, 349.1 ± 3.0, and 341.4 ± 4.3 kcal mol −1 for the o -, m -, and p -methylenephenol radicals, respectively. Construction of a thermodynamic cycle allowed for an experimental determination of the bond dissociation energy of the O–H bond of m -methylenephenol radical to be 86 ± 4 kcal mol −1 , while this bond is significantly weaker for the ortho and para isomers at 55 ± 5 and 52 ± 5 kcal mol −1 , respectively. Additional EAs and vibrational frequencies are reported for several methylphenyloxyl diradical isomers, the negative ions of which are also formed by the reaction of cresol with O − .  more » « less

  1. Ultrafast excited state processes of transition metal complexes (TMCs) are governed by complicated interplays between electronic and nuclear dynamics, which demand a detailed understanding to achieve optimal functionalities of photoactive TMC-based materials for many applications. In this work, we investigated a cyclometalated platinum( ii ) dimer known to undergo a Pt–Pt bond contraction in the metal–metal-to-ligand-charge-transfer (MMLCT) excited state using femtosecond broadband transient absorption (fs-BBTA) spectroscopy in combination with geometry optimization and normal mode calculations. Using a sub-20 fs pump and broadband probe pulses in fs-BBTA spectroscopy, we were able to correlate the coherent vibrational wavepacket (CVWP) evolution with the stimulated emission (SE) dynamics of the 1 MMLCT state. The results demonstrated that the 145 cm −1 CVWP motions with the damping times of ∼0.9 ps and ∼2 ps originate from coherent Pt–Pt stretching vibrations in the singlet and triplet MMLCT states, respectively. On the basis of excited state potential energy surface calculations in our previous work, we rationalized that the CVWP transfer from the Franck–Condon (FC) state to the 3 MMLCT state was mediated by a triplet ligand-centered ( 3 LC) intermediate state through two step intersystem crossing (ISC) on a time scale shorter than a period of the Pt–Pt stretching wavepacket motions. Moreover, it was found that the CVWP motion had 110 cm −1 frequency decays with the damping time of ∼0.2 ps, matching the time constant of 0.253 ps, corresponding to a redshift in the SE feature at early times. This observation indicates that the Pt–Pt bond contraction changes the stretching frequency from 110 to 145 cm −1 and stabilizes the 1 MMLCT state relative to the 3 LC state with a ∼0.2 ps time scale. Thus, the ultrafast ISC from the 1 MMLCT to the 3 LC states occurs before the Pt–Pt bond shortening. The findings herein provide insight into understanding the impact of Pt–Pt bond contraction on the ultrafast branching of the 1 MMLCT population into the direct ( 1 MMLCT → 3 MMLCT) and indirect ISC pathways ( 1 MMLCT → 3 LC → 3 MMLCT) in the Pt( ii ) dimer. These results revealed intricate excited state electronic and nuclear motions that could steer the reaction pathways with a level of detail that has not been achieved before.

  2. Abstract

    Little attention has been focused on diradical and zwitterionic photoperoxides formed from nitrosamine compounds. Here, an attempt is made to probe the electronic character of the nitrooxide intermediate formed in photochemical reactions with triplet oxygen (3O2). Theoretical studies have been conducted to screenpara‐substituted phenyl nitrosamines. In particular, we find that electron‐withdrawing substituents produce low‐lying triplet nitrooxide diradicals. A clear electronic dependence in theS0T1andS0S1energy gaps of nitrooxides was found using Hammett plots. Computed geometries show a twisted diradical triplet nitrooxide moiety, which contrasts to the nearly flat singlet zwitterionic ground state nitrooxide moiety; analyses of charges (natural bond order), molecular orbitals (HOMO/LUMO) and spin densities enable these assignments. Calculations predict the former triplet species is photogenerated initially from nitrosamine with O2. The conversion of the triplet nitrooxide diradical to the singlet ground state is an example where longer‐lived zwitterionic nitrooxide structures become possible. The reaction mechanism is consistent with a zwitterionic ground state nitrooxide playing an important role in the bimolecular oxygen‐transfer reaction with phosphine and phosphite trapping agents as has been observed experimentally.

    The OH+cation is a well‐known diatomic for which the triplet (3Σ) ground state is 50.5 kcal mol−1more stable than its corresponding singlet (1Δ) excited state. However, the singlet forms a strong donor–acceptor bond to argon with a bond energy of 66.4 kcal mol−1at the CCSDT(Q)/CBS level, making the singlet ArOH+cation 3.9 kcal mol−1more stable than the lowest energy triplet complex. Both singlet and triplet isomers of this molecular ion were prepared in a cold molecular beam using different ion sources. Infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in combination with messenger atom tagging shows that the two spin isomers exhibit completely different spectral signatures. The ground state of ArOH+is the predicted singlet with a covalent Ar−O bond.

  5. Anionic states of benzonitrile are investigated by high-level electronic structure methods. The calculations using equation-of-motion coupled-cluster theory for electron-attached states confirm earlier conclusions drawn from the photodetachment experiments wherein the ground state of the anion is the valence 2 B 1 state, while the dipole bound state lies adiabatically ∼0.1 eV above. Inclusion of triple excitations and zero-point vibrational energies is important for recovering relative state correct ordering. The computed Franck–Condon factors and photodetachment cross-sections further confirm that the observed photodetachment spectrum originates from the valence anion. The valence anion is electronically bound at its equilibrium geometry, but it is metastable at the equilibrium geometry of the neutral. The dipole-bound state, which is the only bound anionic state at the neutral equilibrium geometry, may serve as a gateway state for capturing the electron. Thus, the emerging mechanistic picture entails electron capture via a dipole bound state, followed by non-adiabatic relaxation forming valence anions.
