Internet of Things (IoT) is a connected network of devices that exchange data using different protocols. The application of IoT ranges from intelligent TVs and intelligent Refrigerators to smart Transportation. This research aims to provide students with hands-on training on how to develop an IoT platform that supports device management, connectivity, and data management. People tend to build interconnected devices without having a basic understanding of how the IoT platform backend function. Studying the Arm Pelion will help to understand how IoT devices operate under the hood. This past summer, Morgan State University has hosted undergraduate engineering students and high school STEM teachers to conduct IoT security research in the Cybersecurity Assurance & Policy (CAP) Center. The research project involved integrating various hardware sensor devices and real-time data monitoring using the Arm Pelion IoT development platform. Some of the student/teacher outcomes from the project include: 1) Learning about IoT Technology and security; 2) Programming an embedded system using Arm Mbed development board and IDE; 3 3) Developing a network of connected IoT devices using different protocols such as LWM2M, MQTT, CoAP; 4) Investigating the cybersecurity risks associated with the platform; and 5) Using data analysis and visualization to understand the network data and packet flow. First, the student/teacher must consider the IoT framework to understand how to address the security. The IoT framework describes the essential functions of an IoT network, breaking it down into separate layers. These layers include an application layer, middleware layer, and connectivity layer. The application layer allows the users to access the platform via a smartphone or any other dashboard. The Middleware layer represents the backend system that provides edge devices with data management, messaging, application services, and authentication. Finally, the connectivity layer includes devices that connect the user to the network, including Bluetooth or WiFi. The platform consists of several commercial IoT devices such as a smart camera, baby monitor, smart light, and other devices. We then create algorithms to classify the network data flow; to visualize the packets flow in the network and the structure of the packets data frame over time.

HANZO: Collaborative Network Defense for Connected Things
The IoT devices are typically shipped with default insecure configurations and vulnerable software stacks rendering host networks exposed to attacks, especially small networks with no administration. We present a network system model for device configuration and operations management. Using this model, we design and implement an autonomous network management platform with device classification and traffic characterization functions integrated in a network gateway. We evaluate the system using a connected home testbed that combines IoT and general-purpose devices.

The recent spate of cyber attacks towards Internet of Things (IoT) devices in smart homes calls for effective techniques to understand, characterize, and unveil IoT device activities. In this paper, we present a new system, named IoTAthena, to unveil IoT device activities from raw network traffic consisting of timestamped IP packets. IoTAthena characterizes each IoT device activity using an activity signature consisting of an ordered sequence of IP packets with inter-packet time intervals. IoTAthena has two novel polynomial time algorithms, sigMatch and actExtract. For any given signature, sigMatch can capture all matches of the signature in the raw network traffic. Using sigMatch as a subfunction, actExtract can accurately unveil the sequence of various IoT device activities from the raw network traffic. Using the network traffic of heterogeneous IoT devices collected at the router of a real-world smart home testbed and a public IoT dataset, we demonstrate that IoTAthena is able to characterize and generate activity signatures of IoT device activities and accurately unveil the sequence of IoT device activities from raw network traffic.more » « less

Synthetic traffic generation can produce sufficient data for model training of various traffic analysis tasks for IoT networks with few costs and ethical concerns. However, with the increasing functionalities of the latest smart devices, existing approaches can neither customize the traffic generation of various device functions nor generate traffic that preserves the sequentiality among packets as the real traffic. To address these limitations, this paper proposes IoTGemini, a novel framework for high-quality IoT traffic generation, which consists of a Device Modeling Module and a Traffic Generation Module. In the Device Modeling Module, we propose a method to obtain the profiles of the device functions and network behaviors, enabling IoTGemini to customize the traffic generation like using a real IoT device. In the Traffic Generation Module, we design a Packet Sequence Generative Adversarial Network (PS-GAN), which can generate synthetic traffic with high fidelity of both per-packet fields and sequential relationships. We set up a real-world IoT testbed to evaluate IoTGemini. The experiment result shows that IoTGemini can achieve great effectiveness in device modeling, high fidelity of synthetic traffic generation, and remarkable usability to downstream tasks on different traffic datasets and downstream traffic analysis tasks.more » « less

As Blockchain technology become more understood in recent years and its capability to solve enterprise business use cases become evident, technologist have been exploring Blockchain technology to solve use cases that have been daunting industries for years. Unlike existing technologies, one of the key features of blockchain technology is its unparalleled capability to provide, traceability, accountability and immutable records that can be accessed at any point in time. One application area of interest for blockchain is securing heterogenous networks. This paper explores the security challenges in a heterogonous network of IoT devices and whether blockchain can be a viable solution. Using an experimental approach, we explore the possibility of using blockchain technology to secure IoT devices, validate IoT device transactions, and establish a chain of trust to secure an IoT device mesh network, as well as investigate the plausibility of using immutable transactions for forensic analysis.more » « less

The Internet-of-Things (IoT) has brought in new challenges in device identification --what the device is, and authentication --is the device the one it claims to be. Traditionally, the authentication problem is solved by means of a cryptographic protocol. However, the computational complexity of cryptographic protocols and/or problems related to key management, render almost all cryptography based authentication protocols impractical for IoT. The problem of device identification is, on the other hand, sadly neglected. Almost always an artificially created identity is softly associated with the device. We believe that device fingerprinting can be used to solve both these problems effectively. In this work, we present a methodology to perform IoT device behavioral fingerprinting that can be employed to undertake strong device identification. A device behavior is approximated using features extracted from the network traffic of the device. These features are used to train a machine learning model that can be used to detect similar device-types. We validate our approach using five-fold cross validation; we report a identification rate of 93-100 and a mean accuracy of 99%, across all our experiments. Furthermore, we show preliminary results for fingerprinting device categories, i.e., identifying different devices having similar functionality.more » « less
