Title: Validation: A Burgeoning Methodology for Mathematics Education Scholarship.
Validity-related issues are a growing topic within the mathematics education community. Until recently, validation has been treated as something to gather when convenient or is rarely reported in ways that conform to current standards for assessment development. This theoretically-focused proceeding adds to a burgeoning theoretical argument that validation should be considered a methodology within mathematics education scholarship. We connect to design-science research, which is a well-established framework within mathematics education. The goal for this proceeding is to foster the conversation about validation using examples and to communicate information about validation in ways that are broadly accessible.  more » « less

    Digital Mathematics Storytelling is a construct I’ve used to elicit mathematics stories within multiple communities in multiple countries. The framework, based on the idea counter-storytelling, has come from multiple iterations of digital mathematics storytelling workshops from youth and mathematics teachers. In this paper, I reflect on what I’ve learned about the power of storytelling for connecting mathematics to community, cultural, and family identities. But I have also seen how digital media can become weaponized, particularly in the ways it has created a new form of consumerism. In this paper, I make the argument that digital mathematics storytelling not only helps to elicit narratives around mathematics identity, but also helps forge a new critical digital media literacy within our field of mathematics education.

    Validity and validation is central to conducting high quality quantitative mathematics education scholarship. This presentation aims to support scholars engaged in quantitative research by providing information about the degrees to which validity evidence related to their instrument use or interpretation, were found in mathematics education scholarship. Findings have potential to steer future quantitatively focused scholarship and support equity aims.

    Promoting equity in undergraduate mathematics education is of vital importance, yet has received considerably less attention than equity in K-12 mathematics. The current study focuses on a pedagogical training program for graduate teaching assistants’ (GTAs), which emphasizes equity in their teaching of undergraduates. The study examines GTAs’ journals and open-ended survey responses, including their definitions of equity and the ways they promote equity in their classrooms. The research will foster discourse about ways of promoting equity in undergraduate mathematics and about professional development for undergraduate mathematics instructors.

Field experience personnel, such as cooperating teachers (CTs) and university supervisors (USPs), play an important role in supporting mathematics pre-service teachers (PSTs) to learn about equitable teaching practices. We employed case study methodology to explore the perceptions of CTs and USPs about mathematics identity. A group of CTs and USPs participated in professional development during the Fall 2023 semester to learn about ways to develop students’ mathematics identity. In this brief research report we share these CTs’ and USPs’ ideas about their own mathematics identity, their students’ mathematics identity, and how these ideas influence their teaching practice. Our findings have implications for redesigning field experience in teacher education programs.

Calls for a “practice-based” approach to teacher education have become common in scholarship on teacher education, and preservice-teaching (PST) mathematics programs are increasingly heeding this call. Practice-based teacher education (PBTE) moves beyond standard approaches to teacher education in which PSTs learn about teaching in ways they are then expected to apply in practice and toward an approach that provides PSTs opportunities to gain experience in particular core practices in ways that approximate enactment in the classroom. A growing body of research suggests that teachers’ responses, including the questions they ask, can help students’ develop content knowledge and proficiency in mathematics and science practices in the classroom. However, despite evidence that PSTs can notice students’ thinking in various activities in their preparation programs, it is not clear that they are sufficiently well-prepared to propose quality responses before entering the classroom. In this paper, we describe two different approaches that we have taken to provide support for quality teacher questioning in the LessonSketch environment. From our results, we develop a hypothesis that a pedagogical approach that primes novices to notice model questioning can support a stance of focusing on the substance of students’ thinking and probing rather than guiding students’ thinking in their proposed questions.
