Title: STEM Hip-hop Pedagogy: A Meta-synthesis on Hip-hop Pedagogy STEM Interventions Tools for Underrepresented Minorities in K-12 Education
Hip-hop pedagogy is the use of hip-hop artifacts and culture as resources to a curriculum or instruction. Applying hip-hop pedagogy to academic interventions has been suggested to effectively increase the value and connection to course content as well as the ability to re-envision content into ones that reflect underrepresented students of color’s lived experiences. As there is a gap in African American and non White Latino American performance in STEM compared to their White and Asian American counterparts, and a high demand in prospective STEM occupations (namely computer and information technology), hip-hop pedagogy can be leveraged to improve STEM identity to successively improve STEM performance. This paper represents the first stage of a case study to analyze and validate hip-hop pedagogical tools for computing and STEM instruction and outreach. This paper describes a qualitative meta-synthesis of hip-hop pedagogy and associated STEM outreach programs. Findings on hip-hop pedagogy in computing and STEM outreach interventions are discussed to aid in supporting and creating future hip-hop pedagogical interventions.  more » « less

  1. The demand for qualifed computing professionals is high, with thousands of positions remaining unflled each year. To create more qualifed professionals, initiatives to attract and engage students in computer science have been proposed, but they tend to concentrate on primary, secondary (K-12), and post-secondary (college) levels. With many adults looking for better career opportunities, it is sur- prising that few computer science initiatives focus on attracting adult learners to the feld. This paper presents the results of an infor- mal computer programming course that teaches the foundational concepts of computer programming to adults as they program hip- hop beats. This course is designed to attract adult learners that otherwise might have never considered computer programming, building their confdence and skills. We conducted this course on- line, two nights a week, for fve weeks, for about 40 participants. Afterward, we conducted a qualitative analysis of written survey data. We found that the adult learners’ perception of computer programming changed during the course, with many participants planning their next step in computing education.

  2. Long before the internet provided us with a networked digital system, music exchanges had created a global networked analog system, built of recordings, radio broadcasts, and live performance. The features that allowed some audio formations to go viral, while others failed, fall at the intersection of three domains: access, culture, and cognition. We know how the explosive growth of the hip hop recording industry addressed the access problem, and how hip hop lyrics addressed cultural needs. But why does hip hop make your ass shake? This essay proposes that hip hop artists were creating an innovation in brain-to-brain connectivity. That is to say, there are deep parts of the limbic system that had not previously been connected to linguistic centers in the combination of neural and social pathways that hip hop facilitated. This research is not an argument for using computational neuroscience to analyze hip hop. Rather, it is asking what hip hop artists accomplished as the street version of computational neuroscientists; and, how they strategically deployed Black music traditions to rewire the world’s global rhythmic nervous system for new cognitive, cultural, and political alignments and sensibilities.

The Hispanic Serving Institution Advanced Technological Education Hub 2 (HSI ATE Hub 2) is a three-year collaborative research project funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) that builds upon the successful outcomes of two mentoring and professional development (PD) programs in a pilot that translates foundational theory related to culturally responsive pedagogy into practice using a 3-tier scaffolded faculty PD model. The goal of HSI ATE Hub 2 is to improve outcomes for Latinx students in technician education programs through design, development, pilot, optimization, and dissemination of this model at 2-year Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs). The tiered PD model has been tested by two faculty cohorts at Westchester Community College (WCC), an HSI in the State University of New York (SUNY) system. In year one, Cohort A piloted the PD modules in Tier 1 which featured reflective exercises and small culturally responsive activities to try with their STEM students. In year two, Cohort A piloted the PD modules in Tier 2 and peer-mentored Cohort B as they piloted optimizations introduced to Tier 1 from Cohort A feedback. Three types of optimizations came from faculty feedback. The first considered feedback regarding delivery and/or nature of the content that influenced a subsequent module. The second involved making changes to a particular module before it was delivered to another faculty cohort. The third takes into account what worked and what didn’t to decide which content to bring into virtual webinars for the broader advanced technician education community. Dissemination of the tiered PD model has been achieved in annual webinars with the broader ATE community and at conferences for advanced technician educators to achieve broader impacts in the ATE Community. Longer term, providing professional development in culturally responsive pedagogy and practices can help existing and future faculty learn to productively engage their students in more inclusive ways. As faculty mindsets shift to asset-based thinking and a climate of mutual respect is developed, the learning environment for all students in technician education programs will improve. When students learn in a supportive environment, their chances for success increase. The professional development provided in the HSI ATE Hub 2 project will lead to longer term improvements in four ways: 1) Retainment of Culturally responsive practices by those directly engaged after the project ends; 2) Inserting top activities from the PD into national webinars to extend the reach of the training; 3) Strengthening grant proposals as faculty integrate culturally responsive strategies, knowledge and experience within their ATE proposals to the NSF; and 4) Meeting industry demand for a diverse technician workforce. This second paper in a three-part series describes ongoing progress and lessons learned in developing and piloting the 3-Tier PD model with two Cohorts of STEM faculty at a 2-year HSI.

  5. Abstract Background The growing understanding of the oppressive inequities that exist in postsecondary education has led to an increasing need for culturally relevant pedagogy. Researchers have found evidence that beliefs about the nature of knowledge predict pedagogical practices. Culturally relevant pedagogy supports students in ways that leverage students’ own cultures through three tenets: academic success, cultural competence, and sociopolitical consciousness. If STEM practitioners believe that their disciplines are culture-free, they may not enact culturally relevant pedagogy in their courses. We investigated how and in what forms 40 faculty from mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology departments at Hispanic-Serving Institutions enacted culturally relevant pedagogy. We used the framework of practical rationality to understand how epistemological beliefs about the nature of their discipline combined with their institutional context impacted instructors’ decision to enact practices aligning with the three tenets of culturally relevant pedagogy. Results In total, 35 instructors reported using practices that aligned with the academic success tenet, nine instructors with the cultural competence tenet, and one instructor with the sociopolitical consciousness tenet. Instructors expressed and even lauded their disciplines’ separation from culture while simultaneously expressing instructional decisions that aligned with culturally relevant pedagogy. Though never asked directly, six instructors made statements reflecting a “culture-free” belief about knowledge in their discipline such as “To me, mathematics has no color.” Five of those instructors also described altering their teaching in ways that aligned with the academic success tenet. The framework of practical rationality helped explain how the instructors’ individual obligation (to the needs of individual students) and interpersonal obligation (to the social environment of the classroom) played a role in those decisions. Conclusions Instructors’ ability to express two contradictory views may indicate that professional development does not have to change an instructor’s epistemological beliefs about their discipline to convince them of the value of enacting culturally relevant pedagogy. We propose departmental changes that could enable instructors to decide to cultivate students’ cultural competence and sociopolitical consciousness. Our findings highlight the need for future research investigating the impacts of culturally relevant pedagogical content knowledge on students’ experiences.
