Title: Leveraging the expertise of the urban STEM student in developing an effective LA Program: LA and Instructor Partnerships
A key component to the success of the Learning Assistant (LA) Model is the relationship that forms between LAs and faculty members. These relationships can enhance the effectiveness of the model by leveraging the expertise of the LAs and placing LAs in leadership roles where they can co-think and codesign activities and lessons with faculty, as well as provide insights to faculty about the students in the class and the learning environment. Interviews with LAs and faculty members, in addition to video from weekly preparation sessions, illustrate the different types of partnerships that can evolve between LAs and faculty and help us understand the roles different factors play in these partnerships. We contrast three different types of partnerships between LAs and faculty that exist along a continuum: mentor-mentee, faculty-driven collaboration, and collaborative. This data highlights the importance and the benefits of being attentive to these partnerships in developing a robust and effective LA Program.  more » « less

  1. An effective Learning Assistant (LA) Program provides benefits for both Learning Assistants (LAs) and faculty, in addition to benefits for students. By analyzing LA and faculty reflections, weekly preparation sessions, and interviews with LAs and faculty, we can better understand the partnerships that develop between faculty and their LAs. We leverage a combination of qualitative and quantitative data to investigate the types of LA expertise and skills faculty value and how this affects the formation of these partnerships. The Preparation Session Observation Tool (PSOT), developed from this work, can be used by LAs, LA Program Coordinators, and faculty to reflect on the types of LA partnerships that emerge, and how these partnerships can be used in constructing effective learning environments. We anticipate that this tool can then be used to help LAs, coordinators, and faculty modify their working relationship to develop the type of partnerships that are best for their particular instructional setting. PSOT provides a finer-grained analysis to three broad partnership classifications that exist along a continuum: mentor-mentee, faculty-driven collaboration, and collaborative.

  2. Characterizing different enactments of instructional reform approaches is key to improving science education. The Learning Assistant (LA) model leads to many positive student outcomes in a wide range of STEM courses. However, discrepancies in outcomes in different introductory STEM courses have led to a call for more work investigating how the LA model is implemented. This multiple-case study seeks to bridge that gap by providing a high-resolution comparison of three LA-facilitated physics and chemistry courses at two institutions. We used cultural historical activity theory (CHAT) to characterize the activity systems of LA-facilitated interactions and the whole class discussion immediately following these interactions, to understand how instructors leveraged these interactions in their instruction and the roles LAs played in that integration. We found that integrating small group interactions lies on a spectrum based on the extent to which the instructors used student ideas (developed during small group discussion) as mediating artifacts in the whole class discussion, enabled by different divisions of labor and driven by instructors’ different goals. Furthermore, we found that LAs provided both conceptual and emotional support to students to support the integration. Implications for teaching with LAs, and for research on instructional reform more broadly will be discussed.

    RESUMEN: El cuento del chapulín fue contado en el verano de 2016 por un especialista cuentacuentos: el señor José Vélez San Juan, quien es originario de la comunidad nahua de la Huasteca de Hidalgo, San Isidro Atlapexco. El tema central de la historia es el conflicto y tiene como personajes centrales insectos y animales. La narrativa trata de cómo un chapulín retó a un león a pelear porque este último le pisó la pata. Aún cuando el chapulín es un insecto muy pequeño y el león un animal grande, el chapulín le gana la pelea. Uno de los mensajes implicados en el cuento es cómo la cooperación y la solidaridad entre muchos insectos que compar- ten un mismo objetivo puede resultar en una batalla ganada, pues el chapulín solicita la ayuda de hormigas, abejas y avispas para derrotar al león y a sus amigos. Tales valores son centrales en la resistencia que la socie- dad nahua ha mantenido frente a la conquista de occidente. El cuento es parte de las negociaciones diarias de identidad frente a la diferencia cultural. PALABRAS CLAVE: cuento, náhuatl, géneros discursivos, Huasteca, valores culturales. SUMMARY: The cricket tale was told in the summer of 2016 by a seasoned storyteller: Mr. José Vélez San Juan. Mr. San Juan was born and raised in the Nahua community of the Huasteca region of Hidalgo, San Isidro Atlapexco. The central topic of the story is a conflict where insects and mammals play the central roles. The narrative focuses on how the cricket and the lion fight each other because the latter stepped on the former’s foot. In the end, the little cricket wins the fight even if he is much smaller than the lion. With the help of other powerful insects such as ants, bees and wasps, the cricket defeats the lion. One of the messages transmitted in this tale is how the cooperation and solidarity between many insects can result in a won battle. Such values are central to the cultural resistance that Nahua people have shown against western conquest. This tale is part of the daily negotiations of identity in the face of cultural differences. In 2018, California State University Los Angeles (Cal State LA) received a $1 M, 3-year National Science Foundation grant designed to use Big Data and geographic information system (GIS) science to promote active learning and curricular enhancements for community engagement and civic learning. We developed strategic partnerships with the City of Los Angeles Chief Data Officer, and with Community Partners’ Senior Program Director and Programs and Operations Manager. Each of these organizations offered the integrity and vitality necessary for engaging Cal State LA students and faculty, serving local nonprofits and communities, and promoting the City of Los Angeles’ data initiatives through the LA GeoHub and Open Data Portal (ArcNews 2016). This project closely aligns with the universities’ mission (Gomez et al. 2019) to transform local communities by providing underserved residents access to data and technology (Willner 2019).

With support from the National Science Foundation’s Division of Undergraduate Education, this five-year project led by a two-year HSI seeks to provide underrepresented students with mentored work experiences in computer information systems. Students will have access to on-campus work experiences and internships in businesses and industries. It is anticipated that some examples of potential student projects include mobile application development, cybersecurity, and computer support. It is expected that these experiences will increase undergraduate student interest, persistence, and success in computer information systems, as well as in STEM more broadly. To ensure that they are well-prepared for and gain the most from their work experiences, students will receive training on employability skills such as communication, teamwork, and project management. In addition, during their work experiences, students will be mentored by faculty, industry professionals, and peers. To strengthen the capacity of faculty to serve all students, including Hispanic students, the project will provide faculty with professional development focused on equity mindset. This framework to provide mentored work experiences will be developed and piloted at Phoenix College, in the computer information technology department and eventually expanded to other STEM fields at the institution. Following this, the project also intends to expand this framework four other two-year HSIs in the region. Through this work, the project aims to develop a replicable model for how two-year institutions can develop work experiences that foster increased student graduation and entry into STEM career pathways. This project, which is currently in its first year, seeks to examine how a curriculum that integrates cross-sector partnerships to provide work experiences can enhance STEM learning and retention. Using mixed methods and grounded theory, the project will expand knowledge about: (1) the impact of cross-sector partnerships that support work-focused experiential teaching and learning; (2) systematic ways to maintain and better use cross-sector partnerships; and (3) the degree to which a model of work-focused learning experiences can be adopted at other two-year HSIs and by other STEM fields. Baseline data about Hispanic serving identity at the pilot institution has been collected and assessed at the institutional, departmental, and for different educator roles including faculty, support staff, and administrative leaders to produce inputs towards developing a detailed plan of action. Early results from baseline data, visualizations, and planning responses will be reported in the submission. Expected long term results of the project include: development of sustainable mechanisms to foster cross-sector partnerships; increased student retention and workforce readiness; and measurable successes for STEM students, particularly Hispanic students, at two-year HSIs.
