Direct numerical simulation is performed for flow separation over a bump in a turbulent channel. Comparisons are made between a smooth bump and one where the lee side is covered with replicas of shark denticles – dermal scales that consist of a slender base (the neck) and a wide top (the crown). As flow over the bump is under an adverse pressure gradient (APG), a reverse pore flow is formed in the porous cavity region underneath the crowns of the denticle array. Remarkable thrust is generated by the reverse pore flow as denticle necks accelerate the fluid passing between them in the upstream direction. Several geometrical features of shark denticles, including some that had not previously been considered hydrodynamically functional, are identified to form the two-layer denticle structure that enables and sustains the reverse pore flow and thrust generation. The reverse pore flow is activated by the APG before massive flow detachment. The results indicate a proactive, on-demand drag reduction mechanism that leverages and transforms the APG into a favourable outcome.

The spiral valve intestine of sharks has provided the opportunity to observe the efficiency of different valve systems. It is supposed that the spiral intestine present in sharks, skates and rays slows the transit rate of digesta through the gut and provides increased surface area for the absorption of nutrients. In this investigation, we use a novel technique—creating three-dimensional reconstructions from CT scans of spiral intestines—to describe the morphology of the spiral intestine of at least one species from 22 different shark families. We discuss the morphological data in an evolutionary, dietary and functional context. The evolutionary analyses suggest that the columnar morphology is the ancestral form of the spiral intestine. Dietary analyses reveal no correlation between diet type and spiral intestine morphology. Flow rate was slowed significantly more when the two funnel-shaped spiral intestines were subjected to flow in the posterior to anterior direction, indicating their success at producing unidirectional flow, similar to a Tesla valve. These data are available to generate additional three-dimensional morphometrics, create computational models of the intestine, as well as to further explore the function of the gastrointestinal tract of sharks in structural and physiological contexts.more » « less

Music is an important part of childhood development, with online music listening platforms being a significant channel by which children consume music. Children’s offline music listening behavior has been heavily researched, yet relatively few studies explore how their behavior manifests online. In this paper, we use data from LastFM 1 Billion and the Spotify API to explore online music listening behavior of children, ages 6–17, using education levels as lenses for our analysis. Understanding the music listening behavior of children can be used to inform the future design of recommender systems.more » « less
