Title: Developing Relationships, Changing Participation: Computational Identity
This paper examines a single case of an African American boy, Eric, who enrolled in a free week-long summer camp called Art and Coding. We consider how his participatory identity developed in relation to the design of tasks, the students and teachers with whom he interacted, and the tools that he leveraged. With the goal of better understanding the relationship between participation and the development of beliefs about oneself, we then connect our analyses with the students’ self-reflections in interviews. For Eric, a novice programmer whose passion is art, the experience of being positioned routinely as a knowledgeable explorer supported him to feel capable of resolving problems and attaining goals that he set for himself, even as he encountered challenges and frustration.  more » « less

  1. Climate change agreements force us to explore interconnected social, economic, and energy related transitions needed to combat the effects of anthropogenic activities on the Earth's climate. To help us understand what brought us to where we are today and guide us in our decision-making for tomorrow, we introduce the Energy Regulatory Industrial Complex model (ERIC). ERIC illustrates the transformation of energy from energy sources through to energy services, as in energy flow diagrams, but adds the emissions greenhouse gases from those transformations. ERIC includes the creation of wealth enabled by energy services, innovation that supports advances in science and technology, and activities that maintain and sustain existing systems. Policies and geo-politics can influence each decision and investment stream. At its core, ERIC relies on a firm foundation of education. Using data from the United States and India, we show how ERIC can be used to pinpoint the vulnerabilities and places for interventions in transitioning to a clean energy future.

  2. The term “nontraditional students” (NTS) is widely used in higher education research, but its definition varies across studies. Objectives This systematic literature review aims to examine how researchers define NTS in U.S.-based studies and identify potential definitional issues. Methods We conducted a systematic review following PRISMA guidelines, searching EBSCO databases (Education Research Complete, Education Full Text, and ERIC) for peer-reviewed articles published between 2018 and 2022. We analyzed 65 papers that met our inclusion criteria to assess the definitions used for NTS. In this systematic literature review we focus on the definitional issues related to how researchers use the term nontraditional students in US-based studies. We review 65 papers from search results containing 432 papers to understand how researchers define nontraditional students. Of the 65 papers reviewed fully, 33 papers included a specific definition of nontraditional students, 15 included an unspecified definition of nontraditional students, and 17 papers did not include a clear definition at all. Our work suggests that researchers use a clearer definition, such as from the NCES, to define nontraditional students and focus their attention on the seven categories given by NCES.

  3. Many applications deployed to public clouds are concerned about the confidentiality of their outsourced data, such as financial services and electronic patient records. A plausible solution to this problem is homomorphic encryption (HE), which supports certain algebraic operations directly over the ciphertexts. The downside of HE schemes is their significant, if not prohibitive, performance overhead for data-intensive workloads that are very common for outsourced databases, or database-as-a-serve in cloud computing. The objective of this work is to mitigate the performance overhead incurred by the HE module in outsourced databases. To that end, this paper proposes a radix-based parallel caching optimization for accelerating the performance of homomorphic encryption (HE) of outsourced databases in cloud computing. The key insight of the proposed optimization is caching selected radix-ciphertexts in parallel without violating existing security guarantees of the primitive/base HE scheme. We design the radix HE algorithm and apply it to both batch- and incremental-HE schemes; we demonstrate the security of those radix-based HE schemes by showing that the problem of breaking them can be reduced to the problem of breaking their base HE schemes that are known IND-CPA (i.e. Indistinguishability under Chosen-Plaintext Attack). We implement the radix-based schemes as middleware of a 10-node Cassandra cluster on CloudLab; experiments on six workloads show that the proposed caching can boost state-of-the-art HE schemes, such as Paillier and Symmetria, by up to five orders of magnitude.

In this paper, we present a case study with a disabled physics student to draw attention to his experiences in the physics community, and the barriers and supports that he experienced as he advanced through his physics career. Using a methodology of narrative analysis, we identify themes and genres within the stories told by the participant. Narratives are often created to explain the unexpected and to solve a problem. In the physics community, disabled students find their "differences" (i.e., disability/impairments) are often positioned as unexpected and a problem to be solved. We use narrative analysis to humanize disabled physics students and to highlight their lived experiences of progressing through the physics community over their perceived deviation from the physics "norm." From this, we create resources for physics mentors to increase their knowledge of disabled physics students' experiences and how to support accessibility and inclusion in the physics community.

  5. Objective/Research Question: There is a growing demand for skilled workers in engineering and technology fields. However, the number of engineering technology degrees awarded is much less compared to engineering, and a high percentage of students in engineering technology do not persist beyond the first year. To meet the demands for skilled workers, it is important to understand the experiences of engineering technology students to identify factors that contribute to their matriculation and persistence. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the research that exists on the academic and personal experiences of engineering technology and welding technology students. The research questions guiding this study are: (a) what are the academic and personal experiences of engineering technology and welding technology students at 2- and 4-year institutions? and (b) what are students’ experiences with persisting in engineering technology? Methods: Using our research questions and predetermined inclusion criteria, we performed a literature review of relevant articles retrieved from Scopus and ERIC ProQuest databases. Results: We identify three areas of opportunities for future research examination: (a) experiences of students of marginalized populations in engineering technology, (b) how to leverage career and technical education and 2-year engineering technology programs to support matriculation, and (c) ways to address the negative stigma associated with engineering technology programs. Conclusions/Contributions: To meet the demands of the nation’s economy and future workforce, it is important to further examine the experiences of engineering technology students.
