Hierarchically porous electrodes made of electrochemically active materials and conductive additives may display synergistic effects originating from the interactions between the constituent phases, and this approach has been adopted for optimizing the performances of many electrode materials. Here we report our findings in design, fabrication, and characterization of a hierarchically porous hybrid electrode composed of α-NiS nanorods decorated on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) (denoted as R-NiS/rGO), derived from water-refluxed metal–organic frameworks/rGO (Ni-MOF-74/rGO) templates. Microanalyses reveal that the as-synthesized α-NiS nanorods have abundant (101) and (110) surfaces on the edges, which exhibit a strong affinity for OH − in KOH electrolyte, as confirmed by density functional theory-based calculations. The results suggest that the MOF-derived α-NiS nanorods with highly exposed active surfaces are favorable for fast redox reactions in a basic electrolyte. Besides, the presence of rGO in the hybrid electrode greatly enhances the electronic conductivity, providing efficient current collection for fast energy storage. Indeed, when tested in a supercapacitor with a three-electrode configuration in 2 M KOH electrolyte, the R-NiS/rGO hybrid electrode exhibits a capacity of 744 C g −1 at 1 A g −1 and 600 C g −1 at 50 A g −1 , indicating remarkable rate performance, while maintaining more than 89% of the initial capacity after 20 000 cycles. Moreover, when coupled with a nitrogen-doped graphene aerogel (C/NG-A) negative electrode, the hybrid supercapacitor (R-NiS/rGO/electrolyte/C/NG-A) achieved an ultra-high energy density of 93 W h kg −1 at a power density of 962 W kg −1 , while still retaining an energy density of 54 W h kg −1 at an elevated working power of 46 034 W kg −1 .

In situ formation of metal–organic framework derived CuO polyhedrons on carbon cloth for highly sensitive non-enzymatic glucose sensing
Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered promising templates for the fabrication of nanostructured materials with high porosities and high surface areas, which are important parameters for enhanced performance in sensing applications. Here, a facile in situ synthetic strategy to construct MOF-derived porous CuO polyhedrons on carbon cloth (CC) is reported. Uniform Cu(OH) 2 nanorods are first synthesized on carbon cloth, followed by the conversion of Cu(OH) 2 nanorods into porous CuO polyhedrons via a copper-based MOF, Cu–BTC, as the intermediate species. When evaluated as a glucose sensing electrode, the as-fabricated CuO polyhedrons/CC composite exhibits a high sensitivity of 13 575 μA mM −1 cm −2 with a fast response time ( t 90 ) of 2.3 s and a low detection limit of 0.46 μM. This work exemplifies the rational fabrication of porous nanostructures on conductive substrates for enhanced performance in glucose detection.

Abstract The fabrication of MOF polymer composite materials enables the practical applications of MOF‐based technology, in particular for protective suits and masks. However, traditional production methods typically require organic solvent for processing which leads to environmental pollution, low‐loading efficiency, poor accessibility, and loss of functionality due to poor solvent resistance properties. For the first time, we have developed a microbial synthesis strategy to prepare a MOF/bacterial cellulose nanofiber composite sponge. The prepared sponge exhibited a hierarchically porous structure, high MOF loading (up to ≈90 %), good solvent resistance, and high catalytic activity for the liquid‐ and solid‐state hydrolysis of nerve agent simulants. Moreover, the MOF/ bacterial cellulose composite sponge reported here showed a nearly 8‐fold enhancement in the protection against an ultra‐toxic nerve agent (GD) in permeability studies as compared to a commercialized adsorptive carbon cloth. The results shown here present an essential step toward the practical application of MOF‐based protective gear against nerve agents.more » « less

Abstract Solar‐driven steam generation, whereby solar energy is harvested to purify water directly, is emerging as a promising approach to mitigate the worldwide water crisis. The scalable application of conventional 3D evaporators is hindered by their complex spatial geometries. A 2.5D structure is a spatial extension of a 2D structure with an addition of a third vertical dimension, achieving both the feasibility of 2D structure and the performance of 3D structure simultaneously. Here, an interconnected open‐pore 2.5D Cu/CuO foam‐based photothermal evaporator capable of achieving a high evaporation rate of 4.1 kg m−2h−1under one sun illumination by exposing one end of the planar structure to air is demonstrated. The micro‐sized open‐pore structure of Cu/CuO foam allows it to trap incident sunlight, and the densely distributed blade‐like CuO nanostructures effectively scatter sunlight inside pores simultaneously. The inherent hydrophilicity of CuO and capillarity forces from the porous structure of Cu foam continuously supply sufficient water. Moreover, the doubled working sides of Cu/CuO foam enlarge the exposure area enabling efficient vapor diffusion. The feasible fabrication process and the combined structural features of Cu/CuO foam offer new insight into the future development of solar‐driven evaporators in large‐scale applications with practical durability.more » « less

The concentration of dopamine (DA) and tyrosine (Tyr) reflects the condition of patients with Parkinson's disease, whereas moderate paracetamol (PA) can help relieve their pain. Therefore, real-time measurements of these bioanalytes have important clinical implications for patients with Parkinson's disease. However, previous sensors suffer from either limited sensitivity or complex fabrication and integration processes. This work introduces a simple and cost-effective method to prepare high-quality, flexible titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin films with highly reactive (001)-facets. The as-fabricated TiO2 film supported by a carbon cloth electrode (i.e., TiO2–CC) allows excellent electrochemical specificity and sensitivity to DA (1.390 µA µM−1 cm−2), Tyr (0.126 µA µM−1 cm−2), and PA (0.0841 µA µM−1 cm−2). More importantly, accurate DA concentration in varied pH conditions can be obtained by decoupling them within a single differential pulse voltammetry measurement without additional sensing units. The TiO2–CC electrochemical sensor can be integrated into a smart diaper to detect the trace amount of DA or an integrated skin-interfaced patch with microfluidic sampling and wireless transmission units for real-time detection of the sweat Try and PA concentration. The wearable sensor based on TiO2–CC prepared by facile manufacturing methods holds great potential in the daily health monitoring and care of patients with neurological disorders.more » « less

Abstract Electrochemical applications of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are of considerable current interest. Due to the large surface area exposed to solution, MOFs are potentially useful electrode materials for sensing inner‐sphere analytes, such as reactive oxygen species. Herein, we electrodeposited copper benzene tricarboxylate MOF (HKUST‐1) into the cavity of an open carbon nanopipette (CNP) to produce a CNP‐MOF nanoelectrode. Unlike electronically conductive metal or carbon electrodes, the electrochemical response of CNP–MOFs relies on oxidation/reduction of Cu(I)/Cu(II) nodes in the porous nanostructure. Nevertheless, sigmoidal steady‐state voltammograms with a well‐defined plateau current have been recorded for simple redox mediators, for example, ferrocenemethanol. A linear calibration curve obtained for the hydrogen peroxide reduction suggests that CNP–MOFs can potentially be useful as nanosensors for peroxide.more » « less
