Electrotactile stimulus is a form of sensory substitution in which an electrical signal is perceived as a mechanical sensation. The electrotactile effect could, in principle, recapitulate a range of tactile experience by selective activation of nerve endings. However, the method has been plagued by inconsistency, galvanic reactions, pain and desensitization, and unwanted stimulation of nontactile nerves. Here, we describe how a soft conductive block copolymer, a stretchable layout, and concentric electrodes, along with psychophysical thresholding, can circumvent these shortcomings. These purpose-designed materials, device layouts, and calibration techniques make it possible to generate accurate and reproducible sensations across a cohort of 10 human participants and to do so at ultralow currents (≥6 microamperes) without pain or desensitization. This material, form factor, and psychophysical approach could be useful for haptic devices and as a tool for activation of the peripheral nervous system.

Virtual Texture Generated Using Elastomeric Conductive Block Copolymer in a Wireless Multimodal Haptic Glove
Haptic devices are in general more adept at mimicking the bulk properties of materials than they are at mimicking the surface properties. Herein, a haptic glove is described which is capable of producing sensations reminiscent of three types of near‐surface properties: hardness, temperature, and roughness. To accomplish this mixed mode of stimulation, three types of haptic actuators are combined: vibrotactile motors, thermoelectric devices, and electrotactile electrodes made from a stretchable conductive polymer synthesized in the laboratory. This polymer consists of a stretchable polyanion which serves as a scaffold for the polymerization of poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene). The scaffold is synthesized using controlled radical polymerization to afford material of low dispersity, relatively high conductivity, and low impedance relative to metals. The glove is equipped with flex sensors to make it possible to control a robotic hand and a hand in virtual reality (VR). In psychophysical experiments, human participants are able to discern combinations of electrotactile, vibrotactile, and thermal stimulation in VR. Participants trained to associate these sensations with roughness, hardness, and temperature have an overall accuracy of 98%, whereas untrained participants have an accuracy of 85%. Sensations can similarly be conveyed using a robotic hand equipped with sensors for pressure and temperature.

Abstract A type of haptic device is described that delivers two modes of stimulation simultaneously and at the same location on the skin. The two modes of stimulation are mechanical (delivered pneumatically by inflatable air pockets embedded within a silicone elastomer) and electrical (delivered by a conductive polymer). The key enabling aspect of this work is the use of a highly plasticized conductive polymer based on poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiphene) (PEDOT) blended with elastomeric polyurethane (PU). To fabricate the “electropneumotactile” device, the polymeric electrodes are overlaid directly on top of the elastomeric pneumatic actuator pockets. Co‐placement of the pneumatic actuators and the electrotactile electrodes is enabled by the stretchability of the PEDOT:tosylate/PU blend, allowing the electrotactiles to conform to underlying pneumatic pockets under deformation. The blend of PEDOT and PU has a Young's modulus of ≈150 MPa with little degradation in conductivity following repeated inflation of the air pockets. The ability to perceive simultaneous delivery of two sensations to the same location on the skin is supported by experiments using human subjects. These results show that participants can successfully detect the location of pneumatic stimulation and whether electrotactile stimulation is delivered (yes/no) at a rate significantly above chance (mean accuracy = 94%).more » « less

We propose a new class of haptic devices that provide haptic sensations by delivering liquid-stimulants to the user's skin; we call this chemical haptics. Upon absorbing these stimulants, which contain safe and small doses of key active ingredients, receptors in the user's skin are chemically triggered, rendering distinct haptic sensations. We identified five chemicals that can render lasting haptic sensations: tingling (sanshool), numbing (lidocaine), stinging (cinnamaldehyde), warming (capsaicin), and cooling (menthol). To enable the application of our novel approach in a variety of settings (such as VR), we engineered a self-contained wearable that can be worn anywhere on the user's skin (e.g., face, arms, legs). Implemented as a soft silicone patch, our device uses micropumps to push the liquid stimulants through channels that are open to the user's skin, enabling topical stimulants to be absorbed by the skin as they pass through. Our approach presents two unique benefits. First, it enables sensations, such as numbing, not possible with existing haptic devices. Second, our approach offers a new pathway, via the skin's chemical receptors, for achieving multiple haptic sensations using a single actuator, which would otherwise require combining multiple actuators (e.g., Peltier, vibration motors, electro-tactile stimulation). We evaluated our approach by means of two studies. In our first study, we characterized the temporal profiles of sensations elicited by each chemical. Using these insights, we designed five interactive VR experiences utilizing chemical haptics, and in our second user study, participants rated these VR experiences with chemical haptics as more immersive than without. Finally, as the first work exploring the use of chemical haptics on the skin, we offer recommendations to designers for how they may employ our approach for their interactive experiences.more » « less

People use their hands for intricate tasks like playing musical instruments, employing myriad touch sensations to inform motor control. In contrast, current prosthetic hands lack comprehensive haptic feedback and exhibit rudimentary multitasking functionality. Limited research has explored the potential of upper limb amputees to feel, perceive, and respond to multiple channels of simultaneously activated haptic feedback to concurrently control the individual fingers of dexterous prosthetic hands. This study introduces a novel control architecture for three amputees and nine additional subjects to concurrently control individual fingers of an artificial hand using two channels of context-specific haptic feedback. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) recognize subjects’ electromyogram (EMG) patterns governing the artificial hand controller. ANNs also classify the directions objects slip across tactile sensors on the robotic fingertips, which are encoded via the vibration frequency of wearable vibrotactile actuators. Subjects implement control strategies with each finger simultaneously to prevent or permit slip as desired, achieving a 94.49% ± 8.79% overall success rate. Although no statistically significant difference exists between amputees’ and non-amputees’ success rates, amputees require more time to respond to simultaneous haptic feedback signals, suggesting a higher cognitive load. Nevertheless, amputees can accurately interpret multiple channels of nuanced haptic feedback to concurrently control individual robotic fingers, addressing the challenge of multitasking with dexterous prosthetic hands.more » « less

Active, exploratory touch supports human perception of a broad set of invisible physical surface properties. When traditionally hands-on tasks, such as medical palpation of soft tissue, are translated to virtual settings, haptic perception is throttled by technological limitations, and much of the richness of active exploration can be lost. The current research seeks to restore some of this richness with advanced methods of passively conveying haptic data alongside synchronized visual feeds. A robotic platform presented haptic stimulation modeled after the relative motion between a hypothetical physician's hands and artificial tissue samples during palpation. Performance in discriminating the sizes of hidden “tumors” in these samples was compared across display conditions which included haptic feedback and either: 1) synchronized video of the participant's hand, recorded during active exploration; 2) synchronized video of another person's hand; 3) no accompanying video. The addition of visual feedback did not improve task performance, which was similar whether receiving relative motion recorded from one's own hand or someone else's. While future research should explore additional strategies to improve task performance, this initial attempt to translate active haptic sensations to passive presentations indicates that visuo-haptic feedback can induce reliable haptic perceptions of motion in a stationary passive hand.more » « less
